TOMMASO SaLVINI

mirabile to which most of my
reminiscences appear to be re-
lated, to wit, on the evening of Monday,
November 24, 1873, Tommaso Salvini
acted for the first time in Boston, appear-
ing at the Boston Theatre as Samson, in
Ippolito d' Aste's tragedy of that name.
During his early engagements in America
he was supported by a company who
spoke only Italian. Afterward, beginning
with the season of 1880-81, he played fre-
quently in this country, and was the "star"
of troupes otherwise composed of English-
speaking actors. This bilingual arrange-
ment was a monstrosity, and nothing short
of Salvini's genius could have made the
