DURING XIV Charles Fechter the season of 1869-70 Charles Fechter pla3^ed for the first time in the United States, appearing first in New York, and opening, in March of the latter year, at the Bos- ton Theatre as Hamlet. He was born in London, in 1824, and was the son of an Englishwoman and Jean Maria Fechter, a sculptor, who was of German descent, but a native of France. Notwithstanding the mixture of his blood, Charles Fechter was wholly French in his affiliations and sympathies, loathed Germany and all its ways, works, and words, and was careful to pronounce " Fayshtair " his surname, the first syllable of which Boston, because of its extreme culture, persisted and persists [ 113 ]
