8 “Green Shoots” Celebrating some of the new, exciting and varied collection of new businesses in our market towns During 2009 and 2010 there were a number of empty shops in town,….remember? Now look around any of the market towns in the North Cotswolds and there are very few blank shop windows. New businesses have been setting up here - small businesses, unique and individual, stocked by people who can, and will, chat to you about the things they have on their shelves and rails, bought with a passion and intended to catch your eye. There is lots to celebrate about new businesses - the welcome is genuine and warm, the enthusiasm is almost tangible, there is an energy. We are delighted to introduce some of them to you this month and hope that you will drop in and say Hello, and take a look around. Vital and lively communities are at the heart of our North Cotswolds towns, and our local businesses bring energy and opportunity. The Fosse Way is the main artery joining our communities. Just south of Stow on the Fosse is Number Four at Stow, formerly the Roman Court Hotel. Purchased and extensively renovated last year by sisters, Patricia and Caroline Lösel, this delightful cosy, boutique family-run hotel and restaurant opened its doors in June. It feels comfortable – there’s a warm and genuine welcome here, and friendly and attentive service from Caroline and Patricia. Cutler’s Restaurant at Number Four is developing a popular following in its own right. With an established* reputation for good tasty food, Executive Chef Patron, Brian Cutler, takes locally sourced and seasonal produce to prepare classic English and continental dishes. A great value two course lunch (£14.50) is served weekdays and Cutlers is a popular venue for traditional Sunday roast rib of beef and free-range duck from Madgetts Farm. (*Brian’s cooking has already received recognition with a Two Rosette Award from the Automobile Association.) Parking in Stow Square is free for the first two hours, with all day parking free in the small town car park at Tescos, just a 4-5 minute walk. PRETTY, FEMININE …and an invaluable source of delightful things Digbeth Street is always picturesque and has a well established reputation with shoppers and window-shoppers from all around the world. Down on the right hand side, past the New England Coffee House (which has the best coffee aroma in town) is Milly Lilly, with a fascinating selection of gifts chosen with care and displayed with style. The shop interior is pretty and very feminine; prices will suit all budgets, and the range of jewellery, china, cushions, decorative and fun items is perfect for house gifts and personal gifts - from babies to grandma. Teenagers will love Milly Lilly – and I suspect a lot of other people will too!

The old VIC was missed by locals almost a much as by visitors, and although not many locals buy souvenirs, a stunning coffee table book of Cotswold Photos is a wonderful gift. There is a range of travel books here, cards and local crafts too. Tickets for London and local theatres,, days out to Warwick Castle, trains or bus tickets and timetables - all can be obtained by popping into Go-Stow. Save yourself time and stress on the computer and talk to a real person who can advise you about events and help you to plan it and book tickets. Janet Black made her dream of many years come true when she opened this charming little shop last autumn. It is an antiques ‘emporium’ stocked with antiques and collectables brought together from a number of collectors and dealers. ‘HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOME WHICH YOU DO NOT KNOW TO BE USEFUL OR BELIEVE TO BE BEAUTIFUL.’ With its pretty little rooms, decorative corners and good lighting, Holly Cottage Antiques Centre has a ‘dream come true’ feeling. The sparkling displays are frequently changing as items are selected and borne away by happy customers. The fireplace glows with polished copper, toys and Art Nouveau decorate the widow seat, perfume bottles and compacts, lace and silver sit prettily in collections or as individual pieces.
