SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES
“Green
Shoots”
Business feature in
this edition pages 8-12

CHIPPING NORTON TIMES
From the Editor
Thank goodness it’s local!
Do you remember people muttering about the number of empty
shops in our local towns?
Look around any of the market towns now - there are a few blank
windows, but not many. New businesses have been opening here -
small businesses, unique and individual, set up by people who can and
will chat to you, because they are genuinely interested in whether
you like (and will buy) the items they have chosen to stock. We are
highlighting some of those businesses in this edition, and hope that
you will drop in and say Hello, and take a look around.
There are new ‘skills’ involved in surviving the gloomy grey days of an
economic winter, things which we probably didn’t pay too much
attention to before - knowing where to look for the Best Buy
bargains, looking for 2 for 1 promotions and discount vouchers AND
making sure that we use them before they go out of date. We juggle
our plastic cards to get the longest free credit periods and the most
loyalty points, and think twice about filling up the car - at approaching
£100 a go, there are a lot of other things I would rather spend that
money on!
Of course one of the things we can’t always buy in locally is cheap
fuel…. BUT, if we can do most of our shopping locally we will
probably not be standing in the cold filling up the car and handing
over vast amounts of tax and profit quite as frequently, and we won’t
have such a long journey home. Whatever your MPG or kilometre
equivalent, shopping locally make huge sense.
So, pick one of those bright blue sunshine-y days and visit your local
market town(s). You can park free, take time to chat to the person
behind the counter, find out about the local produce, the local crafts
people and skilled artisans working here in our communities. Enjoy
the superb range of coffee shops and tea rooms –a different one
every time you come into town perhaps - welcoming pubs and little
restaurants for lunch or an early supper. We are very lucky living here
– we just need reminding every now and again, rediscovering the
reasons why we do live here and love it!
Best wishes
Jenni Turner, Editor
Thank you to all our contributors, the writers and photographers who
have helped produce this first edition of 2011. This month the tiny team
of volunteers doing research, sub-editing and proof reading grew once
more and now includes Kathie McDonald, Diana Murphy and Jan Marley
– who also manages our deliveries. Their time and input was invaluable.
Thank you too to all our volunteer deliverers and sources of information
– without them these magazines couldn’t function and we always
appreciate their time and commitment.
Hospice Charity’s Search for
Simply Supper Hosts
Simply Supper is a great excuse to get together with friends or family for
dinner on any evening in March 2011 and ask your guests for a donation
to raise money for the charity. The money raised will make a big
difference to families from Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and surrounding
counties who have come to rely on the hospice care for children and
young adults at Helen & Douglas House.
Helen & Douglas House offers medically supported short breaks and
end-of-life care for children and young adults with life-shortening
conditions and counselling and practical support for the whole family.
How you organise your Simply Supper is entirely up to you. You can invite
your guests for jacket potatoes, steaming bowls of chilli, or a four course
candle-lit soirée. If you don’t like cooking, why not tell a friend who does
about Simply Supper and see if they can host an evening?
There are amazing prizes to be won for the best menu, best photo and
quirkiest evening! If you submit your menu, you have a chance of
winning the star prize of a day at Raymond Blanc’s Cookery School.
“Green Shoots”
Celebrating some of the new, exciting and varied
collection of new businesses in our market towns
During 2009 and 2010 there were a number of empty shops
in town,….remember? Now look around any of the market
towns in the North Cotswolds and there are very few blank
shop windows. New businesses have been setting up here -
small businesses, unique and individual, stocked by people
who can, and will, chat to you about the things they have on
their shelves and rails, bought with a passion and intended to
catch your eye.
There is lots to celebrate about new businesses - the
welcome is genuine and warm, the enthusiasm is almost
tangible, there is an energy. We are delighted to introduce
some of them to you this month and hope that you will drop
in and say Hello, and take a look around.
Vital and lively communities are at the heart of our North
Cotswolds towns, and our local businesses bring energy and
opportunity. Supporting them keeps our towns alive, diverse
and interesting, and gives us a reason to be proud of where
we live. We wish every one of these businesses an exciting
and successful year.
The Fosse Way is the main artery joining our communities.
Just south of Stow on the Fosse is Number Four at Stow,
formerly the Roman Court Hotel. Purchased and extensively
renovated last year by sisters, Patricia and Caroline Lösel, this
delightful cosy, boutique family-run hotel and restaurant
opened its doors in June. The hotel has benefitted from a
complete makeover, furnished in a simple, contemporary style
with the emphasis on comfort and convenience with airconditioning
installed throughout the
IT FEELS WARM AND COMFORTABLE HERE –
it’s a nice place to be, with a delightful menu
establishment. It feels comfortable – there’s a warm and
genuine welcome here, and friendly and attentive service
from Caroline and Patricia. Cutler’s Restaurant at
Number Four is developing a popular following in its own
right. With an established* reputation for good tasty food,
Executive Chef Patron, Brian Cutler, takes locally sourced and
seasonal produce to prepare classic English and continental
dishes. A great value two course lunch (£14.50) is served
weekdays and Cutlers is a popular venue for traditional
Sunday roast rib of beef and free-range duck from Madgetts
Farm. (*Brian’s cooking has already received recognition with
a Two Rosette Award from the Automobile Association.)
You can view the website: www.hotelnumberfour.co.uk, or
even better, pop in and see for yourself – it’s a nice place to
be, with a delightful menu.
Parking in Stow Square is free for the first two hours,
with all day parking free in the small town car park at
Tescos, just a 4-5 minute walk.
PRETTY, FEMININE …and an invaluable source of
delightful things
Digbeth Street is always picturesque and has a well
established reputation with shoppers and window-shoppers
from all around the world. Down on the right hand side, past
the New England Coffee House (which has the best coffee
aroma in town) is Milly Lilly, with a fascinating selection of
gifts chosen with care and displayed with style. The shop
interior is pretty and very feminine; prices will suit all
budgets, and the range of jewellery, china, cushions, decorative
and fun items is perfect for house gifts and personal gifts -
from babies to grandma. Teenagers will love Milly Lilly – and
I suspect a lot of other people will too!

Out of Talbot Court walk down Sheep Street and on the left is Holly
come true when she opened this charming little shop last autumn. It
is an antiques ‘emporium’ stocked with antiques and collectables
brought together from a number of collectors and dealers.
‘HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOME WHICH YOU
DO NOT KNOW TO BE USEFUL OR BELIEVE
With its pretty little rooms, decorative corners and good lighting,
Holly Cottage Antiques Centre has a ‘dream come true’ feeling. The
sparkling displays are frequently changing as items are selected and
borne away by happy customers. The fireplace glows with polished
copper, toys and Art Nouveau decorate the widow seat, perfume
bottles and compacts, lace and silver sit prettily in collections or as
individual pieces. Memories are on display here, treasures and keepsakes
Chris & Morgana Tilling started renovation in the old
Drivers can also park free in Moreton in Marsh ( although this can
be tricky on Tuesday market days). Two very different galleries
opened here in 2010 - The Moreton Gallery displays paintings and
crafts in a friendly ‘working’ studio. Further up the High Street Celia
Lendis opened her modern and light Contemporary Gallery in
September. ”People often think that they aren’t wealthy enough to
buy art, or that they don’t know enough. This isn’t the case. It is
collectors that keep galleries fresh and moving, and without the
support of both established and new collectors, art can never
thrive.’
GET CREATIVE!
Sometimes it’s important to have somewhere to go, something to
do, which will entertain and be good fun for everyone, the family
and/or friends. Just off the High Street is Beatrix Craft Studio, a
‘must know about’ for mums with youngsters, and great fun for a
teenage party or a team break from work, lifting tension and
encouraging new ideas to flow.
Beatrix Craft Studio was set up by Emily Bright, herself a young
Mum with lots of experience in knowing how to survive something
as potentially messy as paints and self expression! She has thought
of and provides all the necessary survival kit – a fantastic range of
ready to paint dinnerware, ornaments and home décor pieces,
paints and aprons - and a capable and friendly team with the tools
and time to help you along the way –and do all the cleaning up!
Select an item of pottery from the huge range of stock - and get
creative! Whatever your ability the tools and time are here to help
you. Return in a few days to collect your fired item, ready to pop on
your shelf or wrap up for Granny - either way you’ll have something
unique to be cherished. Parties can be booked, packages tailored to
suit your needs and budget – and the Host receives a free souvenir
personalised by their guests.
For seasoned stitchers and complete novices
Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds
North Cotswold Rotary
From Brian Honess, PRO
Although the weather forced us to cancel our collecting days at
Tesco Stores, we were able to visit the Tescos at Stow to present
Mark MacDonald the current store manager with a framed citation
in recognition of the help received from Tesco in our fund raising.
In 2010 some £10,000 was raised through the collections at Tesco.
These have often been for the specific relief of people severely
affected by natural disasters – the Haitian earthquake and the
Pakistani floods being two major such events. At other times, such
as Christmas, we have collected for selected Rotary charities. We
thank all those who have contributed so generously. (The photo
shows our President Michael Orme presenting the citation.)
HOWEVER we did have some successful fund raising activities prior
to Christmas. The Victorian Evening in Bourton raised some £2,000
from car parking and we are grateful to John Hackling for allowing
us the use of Hackling’s car park. The BIG BAND Concert with the
Band of the Army Air Corps, enjoyed by a full house at Bourton
School, brought in £3,300 – this is split between the band’s own
charity (the Corps of Army Music Trust) and Rotary Charities. The
future of the Army Air Corps Band is uncertain due to budget cuts,
but we hope that they will be with us again on December 11th
(make a note!). The photo above shows Rotary President Michael
Orme with the Band’s Director of Music, Captain Justin Mathews
(right) and Bandmaster WO1 Peter Bede.
AUCTION of PROMISES
Finally – make a note of SATURDAY March 19th, when we are
holding an Auction of Promises at The Plough, Ford. More of this
next month – but if you, or someone you know, has an item which
they are prepared to promise and which can be auctioned for
charity – please contact your local Rotarian - NOW!!.
TREE OF LIGHT
The Tree-of-Light, in remembrance of family or friends who have
died, raised £2,700 this Christmas. Thank you to all who
supported this activity. The funds are distributed to Kates Home
Nursing, Gloucestershire Air Ambulance and Rotary Charities
including the Rotary Foundation.
ROTARY CLUB OF KINGHAM AND DAYLESFORD
From Paul Jackson
High Court judge on the importance of Independent Judges.
Kingham resident Sir Anthony Mann gave a well attended club meeting an
interesting expose on the role of Judges in our democratic society. Judges
not only interpret and therefore create the law by constant reference to
precedent, they also protect citizen rights from over excessive
governments. (Apparently High Court Judges can only be fired by an act
passed by both Houses of Parliament…perhaps we all underestimate their
role in our free society.)
Duck Race…..a sell out and lots of fun.
The now well established New Year’s Day Duck Races, sponsored by
WORLD OF COLOR Chipping Norton, and held at The Mill House Hotel was
a runaway success, raising nearly £1200 for the primary school outside
classroom, local charities and Rotary’s global Foundation (currently
“almost there” with its eradicate Polio campaign). Forty one winners
shared £500 of prize money with the £100 prize going to Juliet, an 8 year
old holiday visitor who was overwhelmed to have won.
Keith Hartley Chairman of
Kingham Parish Council
starts the first race.
Juliet receives her winnings from
President Nova Bradley
Where does your money go?
Well some of it goes to a Micro Bank in Malawi - Nick Teale from the
Rotary Club of Burnham Beeches recently gave a fascinating overview of a
venture that is transforming the lives of the economically disadvantaged,
loaning them starter business loans of £25 for four months at a time.
What is really interesting is that the Bank, based in Oxford, avoids
mentioning its charitable status as their customers in Malawi are reluctant
to accept charity. The majority are women, who are the marketeers of the
country. Other unique approaches are that the PINs are fingerprints; to
get a loan you need to belong to a Trust Group of around ten people who
take out a joint loan and underwrite each other. No wonder they have a
98% repayment record, something our UK banks could learn! The local
Rotary Clubs in this UK region have donated over £73,000 in the last
three years to this worthwhile venture, which has increased its capital
employed from £1.9 million to £5.7. They plan to increase the number of
customers from 250k to 1 million in four years. Thank you for your
donations to Rotary.
New Members joining our one year old club!
There is no doubt that as a new club, younger members, ladies and
couples are finding our new very informal style attractive. This month we
welcome 5 new members from Churchill, Bledington and Chipping Norton.
See www.kinghamrotary.org.uk and come along without any obligation -
the next meetings are February 9th and 21st. It’s fun!

TIME FOR CHANGE
The winter weather challenged all of us, especially the elderly who
often experience loneliness and anxiety as well as the practical
difficulties of surviving extreme conditions. At such times they may
wonder if their quality of life could be improved by moving to a
different type of housing – the crisis passes and, as the choices can
seem limited, this enormous decision is shelved for another day. We at
Abbeyfield appreciate this - but when we see People thriving once
they have decided to move, and our provision meets their needs,
explaining what we offer seems very important.
The Abbeyfield Society provides Supported Independent Living for
older people. It does not easily fit into a “Care for The Elderly box”. At
the heart of Abbeyfield are the residents who live their own lives ‘with
us’ - they have their own keys and furnishings, and can choose to
participate in social activities; a balance of privacy, support and
security where older people don’t have to compromise, in well
maintained houses with no bills or repairs to worry about. Each House
has a dedicated House Manager, a supportive staff team and homecooked
meals. Theatre trips, events and coffee mornings enhance the
quality of life and there is usually a friendly face and a listening ear not
far away.
Alistair Robertson House at Bourton and Abbeyfield House in Stow
are Supported Independent Living Houses, each with a maximum of
nine residents. There are over 700 Abbeyfield Houses and Care Homes
in UK. Abbeyfield is a Not for Profit organisation and is affordable to
all. Our professional staff team can assist with a financial assessment
and help maximise income. Charges are all inclusive (excepting a
telephone line). Details are available on request.
That major life change is supported all the way!
THE LOCALISM BILL
The Government published the Localism Bill on 13 December.
The Bill aims to shift power from central government back into
the hands of individuals, communities and councils, and will
provide greater recognition of the role of local (community,
neighbourhood, parish, village and town) councils along with a
range of new powers..
Key points of the Localism Bill include:
• a new power for local people to approve or veto excessive
council tax rises through a local referendum, but with the
intention that the majority of local councils will fall below
the level set by the Secretary of State;
• a right for local councils to challenge a local authority by
expressing an interest in running any service for which they
are responsible – this also applies to voluntary and
community groups, social enterprises and local authority
employees delivering a service);
• the chance for communities to buy a local community asset
when it comes on the open market, developing a bid and
raising the capital
• measures to give people, councillors and councils the power
to instigate a local referendum on any local issue;
• a new general power of competence to provide local
authorities – including certain local councils – to enable
them to do anything apart from that which is specifically
prohibited;
• freeing up councillors to be able to campaign, to express
views on issues and to vote on issues within their
communities, without fear of being unjustly accused of
having a closed mind on a particular issue;
• the abolition of the Standards Board regime and a new duty
on local authorities to promote and maintain high standards
of conduct, including provision for the adoption of a
voluntary code of conduct;
• changes to the Community Infrastructure Levy including
provisions requiring some of these funds to be passed to
neighbourhoods where the development has taken place;
• a new right for local councils to shape their local areas
through neighbourhood plans which will enable
communities to permit development – in full or in outline –
without the need for planning applications;
• the power for communities to take forward development in
their area without the need to apply for planning
permission, subject to meeting certain safeguards and
securing 50 per cent support of the community through a
referendum.
An essential guide to the Bill has also been produced setting
out the thinking that underpins the Bill. The guide makes the
case for a radical shift of power from the centralized state to
local communities, and describes the six essential actions
required to deliver decentralization down through every level
of government to every citizen.
A Plain English Guide to the Localism Bill (published 11th.
January) by Communities & Local Government is available
from: www. communities.gov.uk
A copy of the Localism Bill can be found at:
http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2010-
11/localism/documents.html
The Local Government Bill recognizes the importance of Parish and
Town Councils in determining local policies and the future of their
communities. For the first time our representatives can be key players
in decisions made at district, county and even government level.
To be representative each council needs to have fully elected
members. It is imperative that nominations are received for all the
seats on our councils.
Voting for Parish and District Councillors
The term of office for a parish councillor is 4 years and the current
councillors are due to retire in May this year. This means that there
are seats up for grabs for the next term of office, so if you would like
to be involved in the community, now is the time to say so!
To stand as a candidate at the election, you must be 18 years of age
or over and a Commonwealth or European Union citizen. You must
also be able to answer Yes to at least one of the following: do you live
or work within the parish; are you included on the register of
electors; do you own or rent land within the parish; do you live within
3 miles of the parish boundary?
If you are interested in standing, you will need to contact the
Elections office at Cotswold District Council for a nomination
paper. The nomination paper has two parts; the nomination itself
includes your personal details and needs to be signed by two people
who are on the electoral register in the parish;
the second part is the consent to nomination which you must sign
and have witnessed. These forms are available from early
March and must be back with the elections office no later than noon
on 4 April 2011.
After the deadline, if there are more candidates than seats, there will
be vote on 5 May. If there are the same number or less than the
number of seats, those people are elected and the new council can
co-opt others to fill the remaining vacancies.
It is always good to have some new ideas on the council and get more
people involved in the process, so ring the elections office and get
that information now.
West Oxfordshire Council elections helpline on
01993861522/ 861525 or westoxon.gov.uk/electoralservices
District councillors face the vote too
This year we will also have the opportunity to vote for our District
Councillor. Qualifications for being a District Councillor are similar to
those for the parish except that the area relates to the district rather
than the parish and the last one (living within 3 miles of the
boundary)doesn't apply.
The nomination process is the same although you will need
signatures from 10 supporters instead of 2 at parish. More
information is available on the Cotswold District Council website
westoxon.gov.uk/electoralservices or call
01993861522/ 861525
Will you be able to vote?
If there is more than 1 candidate for the District wards, there will be
an election and we will need to vote. To be able to vote you need to
be included on the Electoral Register. To make sure you are included,
contact Cotswold District Council elections office. If you are not
included you have until 18 April to fill in the application form.
If you will be away on election ay or not able to get to the polling
station, then you can apply to vote by post or proxy. Applications
need to be with Cotswold District Council by 18 April for postal voting
and 25 April for proxy voting.
Councillors 'free' to back local issues
As ‘Community Champions’
Based on an article by Ruralcity Media at rsnonline.org.uk
COUNCILLORS are to be freed from restrictions preventing
them from championing local issues, says the
government. Local government minister Grant Shapps
said he wanted 2011 to be the year of "councillor power".
Over the coming weeks, he intends to encourage a new
generation of community champions to put their names
on the ballot paper for May's local elections.
“The government's Localism Bill will help place councillors
centre stage in their communities with more clout than
ever before,” said Mr Shapps. This would include freeing
councillors from restrictions that prevented them from
championing local issues.
Mr Shapps has written to every council in England to
outline how the new Localism Bill will clarify these socalled
"predetermination" rules. “It was wrong that
councillors felt they were prevented from performing the
role they were elected to do because they had declared a
particular view on an issue. Yet predetermination rules did
just that. It is ridiculous that a community can vote for
someone standing on a particular issue, only for that
person to be barred from talking about it once in office.
Councillors must be given the freedom to properly
represent the views of their constituents."
The Localism Bill will clarify predetermination rules and
end the uncertainty that had left councillors confused and
concerned about voicing opinions on issues of local
importance. "We are placing councillors centre stage in
their communities with more clout than ever before to get
things done for the people they serve.” Predetermination
rules had led some council officers to advise councillors
against discussing matters of local importance, the
government claims.
Scheduled Elections/
Referendum in 2011
The next scheduled elections for
Thursday 5th May 2011.
On that date there will be an election of one
member of the District Council for Chipping Norton
There will also be elections for
16 councillors to Chipping Norton
Town Council.
It is also expected that there will be a
Referendum on 5th May 2011
on the future voting system for electing Members of
Parliament, but this is subject to government
confirmation in due course. The question expected
to be voted on is: "Do you want the United Kingdom
to adopt the 'alternative vote' system instead of the
current 'first past the post' system for electing
Members of Parliament to the House of Commons?”
Help tomorrow take shape
Every ten years a census is carried out by the Office for National
Statistics to find out more about the people who live in England and
Wales, and about the make-up of local areas. The results from the
census, the estimates of the population at national, regional and local
level, are then used to share out government funding and resources for
all sorts of services and facilities.
The census asks about work, health, nationality, citizenship, ethnic
background, education, second homes, language, religion, marital
status and so on. This information is then used to build up a picture of
today's society and provides a powerful tool for looking at the area we
live in and helping us plan for changes within our community. For
example, it can help us see if we need to encourage the building of
more care homes for the elderly or starter homes for first time buyers.
The successful location of leisure centres, cinemas, schools, retail
outlets and housing developments all look to the census results.
Our role
We are working with the Office for National Statistics to help make sure
that the 2011 Census is a success. West Oxfordshire District Council
relies, like all local authorities in England and Wales, on the census
information to make sure that we get the right amount of government
funding to provide you with the public services and facilities you
deserve. How much funding we get is directly related to how many and
what kind of people, the census says live in West Oxfordshire.
Your role
Please fill in the questionnaire which the Office for National Statistics
will send to you on Sunday 27 March 2011, answering the questions
about yourself and the people who share your household with you. You
will be able to respond online or by post. If you would like to find out
more in the meantime, please visit the 2011 Census website.
Census jobs
The Office for National Statistics is recruiting people to help with the
census. You can find out more about census job opportunities by
visiting the Census Jobs website.
Telephone
scammers target
computer users
Oxfordshire County Council's Trading Standards team is warning people about
conmen who are cold calling residents and claiming that their computers are
infected with viruses which they can fix. These conmen often say they work for
Microsoft or Windows, although many different names are used. They will know
your name and address and will suggest that your computer is at serious risk
from the viruses or “malware” with which it is “infected”.
Stealing information. They may ask you to shut down and re-start your computer
or direct you straight to a program called “Windows Event Viewer”. This will list
errors, some of which will be labelled “critical”. In fact, there is nothing wrong
with your computer and the program is simply being used to con you into
thinking you have a problem.
If you fall for the scam, you will then be directed to a website to download a
program which will allow the caller to control your computer to “fix” it. All that is
actually happening is that the conmen are being given access to all your data
stored on your computer, which could include personal, banking and identity
information.
The caller will demand payment for the so-called service provided. You will be
asked for a direct debit or credit card payment and may also be asked to sign up
to a direct debit payment scheme for ongoing “protection”. If you refuse to pay,
the criminal on the other end of the phone may threaten to crash your computer.
Trading Standards has received reports of up to £240 being demanded as a one
off payment.
Lists of names, telephone numbers and addresses are marketed internationally
and call centres, particularly in India, make thousands of these calls, preying on
unsuspecting computer users. Richard Webb, Deputy Head of Oxfordshire County
Council's Trading Standards, said: “If you do receive a telephone call like this, we
advise you to hang up straight away. If you have noted the caller’s telephone
number or have been given a trader name or website address, please report the
call to Trading Standards at 0845 051 0845 or
trading.standards@oxfordshire.gov.uk."
Trees Old and New
From Catherine Roffe, Clerk to Swell Parish Council
Last year the Cotswold Tree Warden Group held a competition to
find the finest trees in the Cotswolds across some nineteen
categories. Trees in Swell won two categories, a Wellingtonia for
largest girth & a Pagoda for rarest. To mark this success an oak
tree, donated by the residents of Nether Swell, was planted by the
children of Swell School. It is positioned where it can be enjoyed
by the many users of the Millenium footpath between Lower
Swell and Stow. Pictured in the photo are Ellie Keegan age 7 and
Alfie Dodridge, age 8, ably assisted by our Tree Warden, John
Reynolds.
Another tree was a runner-up for its interesting history... A 200
year-old yew tree is on a route used by tramps to travel between
the workhouses in Guiting Power and Stow on the Wold.
Apparently, if they spent the night at the Stow workhouse they had
to pay. Instead, they slept under this tree and walked to Stow in the
morning for a free meal. Long time resident Mike Oughton tells
how as a schoolchild he had to walk through this wood to go to
Stow school for woodwork lessons. It was with some trepidation
that they walked past any sleeping tramp beneath the tree!
THE NATURAL WONDERS OF THE CEVENNES
Article and photographs by Mike Boyes
In the present economic climate you may not wish to travel
too far to enjoy a summer holiday. If you are interested in
nature, the Cevennes in southern France is a naturalist’s
heaven. Last July we drove down at our leisure and stayed
for a week in a fairly basic and inexpensive gite with an
amazing view, several miles from the nearest village.
There are few places in Europe that match the diversity of
landscapes and wildlife to be found in the Cevennes and
Grands Causses, rugged upland limestone plateaux
separated by deep, forested river gorges. The area, made
famous in R L Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey in the
Cevennes, is unfamiliar to most British travellers, but once
you have discovered it you are likely to return again
The Cevennes forms the south-eastern part of the Massif
Central, and to the south of the region mountains drop
down to the Mediterranean near Monpellier. What gives
the region its rich diversity are the three different rock
types to be found: limestone (the main feature of the
dramatic river gorges and uplands of the Causses),
granite, and schist – each with its own distinctive habitat.
In the space of a week you can explore scenic gorges
several hundred metres deep with vertical cliffs and
pinnacles of rock that look as if they are about to topple
over; dry Mediterranean scrubland, home to a great
variety of plants, birds, butterflies and reptiles; grassland
and hot, open scrub of the Causses, rich in wild flowers
and many butterfly species; sub-alpine heaths and bogs;
and forests of chestnut – such a distinctive feature of the
Cevennes – together with oak, beech and Maritime pine.
No visit to the Cevennes would be complete without an
easy ascent of its two highest mountains, each quite
different from the other – Mont Lozere (1,699m) and
Mont Aigoual (1,565m)
If you are interested in butterflies, few places in Europe
have more species than the Cevennes, with some 150
species recorded. Some species that are hard to see in
Britain can be found without difficulty in different parts of
the Cevennes, such as Swallowtails, Silver-washed
Fritillaries, Clouded Yellows, and Chalkhill and Adonis Blues.
You will see and hear many different insects, damselflies
and dragonflies, and it is a challenge to identify them all.
Common Lizard
Wildflowers are so abundant that you can just enjoy the
spectacle, or spend your time immersed in a guide book
ticking off all those you can identify for sure. Two useful,
inexpensive guide books I recommend are: Butterflies of
Britain and Europe (Green Guide series, but avoid the
companion volume on birds), and Mediterranean Wild
Flowers (DK Pocket Nature series). If you want to identify
some of the many lizards you will see, then the European
Reptile and Amphibian Guide is very useful.
Space precludes a list of all the birds,
butterflies, moths, insects and
lizards we saw, but the few
illustrations included here may
encourage you to visit and explore
this magnificent, scenic, richly varied
and largely unspoilt region of France.
If you enjoy nature and the great
outdoors, give yourself a treat and
visit the Cevennes this summer.
Greystones Farm
(& Salmonsbury Meadows SSSI)
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
Greystones Farm Nature Reserve is tucked away to the east of
Bourton-on –the-Water, a short walk from the town centre.
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust took on the ownership of
Greystones Farm in 2002, setting up a project to manage the
important existing grassland habitats, restoring and
improving other habitats, landscape features and farming
infrastructure. In partnership with a local farmer Greystones
is run as a cattle farm, managed along organic principals with
grazing, silage and hay cutting making up the principal
farming system. The farm is home to the Salmonsbury
Meadow Site of special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
At the south of the farm is Salmonsbury Camp Scheduled
Ancient Monument, covering an area of 27ha. Still visible are
the remains of ramparts which once formed part of a fortified
Iron Age town dating from the late Iron Age and later used by
the Romans. However the human use of the site can be
traced back to the Neolithic with evidence of a causewayed
enclosure taking activity at Greystones back 5000 years.
How to get there
From the traffic lights on the A429 Fosse Way, turn into
Bourton-on-the-Water on Station Road. Follow Station Road
for approximately half a mile, around a right hand bend - park
in the Station Road public car park (pay + display) on your
right behind the garage.( There is no visitor parking at
Greystones Farm). Walk back the way you came to the bend
in the road – turn right shortly onto the narrow lane (marked
with a 'no through road' sign). Turn immediately left on to
Greystones Lane (signposted private road). It is advisable to
phone the farm office to check before your visit
Grid Ref: SP 173209 | Area: 66 Hectares
Facilities
This is a working livestock farm with numerous gates. Paths
are through fields and maybe rutted and very muddy in wet
weather. The site is gently undulating but there are some
cross gradients of up to 12%. There are no seats or resting
places on site.
NEWS
Great news for those who have been waiting for the sixth (and
final) book in the ‘Earth’s Children’ series by Jean Auel. Back in
1980, the series started with ‘Clan of the Cave Bear’, which was
translated into 18 languages. We’ve had to wait 30 years for
‘Land of Painted Caves’ but I’m sure the wait to rejoin Ayla and
her ice age tribe will have been worthwhile. We have a limited
number of the new hardback at the reduced price of £14.99 (RRP
£19.99) so please order in time for the release date, 29 March.
Wondering what all the fuss is about? We have a special price on
the first in the series too. ‘The Clan of the Cave Bear’ is reduced
from £8.99 to £5.99 - again, a limited number only.
REVIEWS
Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane HB at £16.99
Hard bitten private eyes in conflict with the Russian Mafia are
fairly rare but this sets the mark. Middle aged Patrick dealt with a
case that still haunts him, the return of a child to no-good
parents. When she goes missing again, the trail leads him into
conflict with some of the most brutal thugs I’ve read about.
There were places in this yarn, of murder and mayhem following
a stolen Russian icon, where I felt the coincidences and lucky
breaks stretched belief but the breakneck pace, wit and
convincing, slightly-over-the-hill, protagonist were always enough
to keep me reading with enjoyment. Don’t ask about the multistrand
plot, just admire the psychopathic heavies.
.
Flip by Martyn Bedford PB at £7.99
There are many body-swap novels but most take the comedy
route. This teen read takes things more seriously and looks at the
problems of a young boy, waking up in the body of another and
having to acclimatise to a new life in which he cannot share his
secret. When he tries, of course,
he is disbelieved. There are advantages to being Philip rather
than Alex - the girls, for a start. However, none are the right girl
for Alex. There are complications and humour but, in the main,
this is a well written and thoughtful look at some teen problems,
a convincing fantasy and a charming romance. I could have
happily read much more of this. Another please!
The Big
Tree
Plant
Funding Scheme Overview
includes a funding scheme to
encourage and support community groups to plant trees in
neighbourhoods where people live and work. The funding scheme,
provided by the Forestry Commission, is part of its contribution to the
Defra-led partnership.
The funding scheme application form is available on the campaign
website www.direct.gov.uk/thebigtreeplant
Who can apply for funding? The Big Tree Plant aims to increase the
number of trees being planted in towns, cities and residential areas, by
supporting community groups and organisations to establish or expand
projects to plant and care for trees.
In support of this, The Big Tree Plant funding scheme is available to any
group of individuals who come together to improve their environment
through tree planting. Applicants need to be part of a community-led, not
for profit organisation. It would be preferable if the group was organised
through a written constitution to ensure long term care of the trees. The
Big Tree Plant funding scheme is not intended for individuals or local
authorities (unless they are members of a community partnership).
What are the minimum / maximum amounts of funding?
The minimum level of application is £500. The maximum amount of
funding for any one project will normally be £25,000.
Can we decide on the location(s)?
The funding scheme will be open to all planting in urban and other
residential areas, but applications will be particularly encouraged for
projects in deprived areas with little greenery that would benefit most.
Campaign funded planting could be on streets or in publicly accessible
green spaces. Projects may be considered on privately owned land or
land that is not publicly accessible such as school grounds as long as they
provide benefits to local people and involve the local community in the
project.
If a project location is specified with an application, written permission
from the landowner must also be provided. Projects will be considered
where the exact location is not yet known. In such cases, it will be a
condition of the grant that permission and support from the landowner
is demonstrated once the location has been identified and before any
work begins.
Who will review the applications for funding?
Applications for funding will be assessed by a panel of representatives
from civil society organisations, national tree bodies, Defra and the
Forestry Commission. The panel will have an independent chair.
Do we need to find matching funding?
Matched funding is not absolutely necessary, but the panel assessing the
applications will favour those schemes where it is incorporated. Matched
funding of at least 25% will normally be looked for. Volunteer time will
be accepted as part of the matched funding.
Do applicants need to guarantee that the tree(s) will survival? For the
purposes of this funding applicants will be asked to demonstrate that
they have a long term plan of community partnership and involvement
which will ensure continued maintenance of the trees planted. The
campaign website will provide information about how to care for trees.
Where can we find The Big Tree Plant funding scheme application form?
This is available on the campaign website
www.direct.gov.uk/thebigtreeplant
For more information about The Big Tree Plant funding scheme: Contact
details are available on the campaign website
Wheel Heroes 100s – Cyclists Fighting Cancer
(With thanks to BikeBiz online)
Dawes Cycles has got behind the Cyclists Fighting Cancer
charity, sponsoring a major fundraising event on May 22nd
when The Wheel Heroes 100s’ will take place in either a 100
mile or 100 km ride around Stratford on Avon, Chipping
Campden and Stow on the Wold.
Cyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC) donates bikes, specially adapted
trikes and tandems to children and young people affected by
cancer to encourage them to get active again. CFC was set up by
Mike Grisenthwaite, himself a cancer survivor and keen cyclist.
Grisenthwaite sai.: "Having Dawes on board for the Wheel
Heroes event is fantastic I am passionate about making this
event a fun and exciting experience for everyone who takes part
whilst helping raising the cash to help kids affected by cancer.
Something as simple as a bike really does change their lives and
the money raised at this event will help us donate even more
bikes in the future.
“Stratford offers superb cycling terrain for all abilities along the
picturesque highways and byways of Warwickshire and the
adjacent counties of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and
Oxfordshire. It will be a fantastic day of cycling for everyone
who enjoys riding a bike.”
The ride begins and ends at Stratford Racecourse, Luddington
Road, Stratford upon Avon, CV37 9SE. For more information -
A ‘Spinners’ Challenge
7th March starting at 9am
at Bourton Leisure Centre
Nicki Banks teaches indoor cycling, and has decided to set
her regular 'spinners' a challenge for the new year – a 100
mile cycle session. This should take approximately 4 hours.
They hope the challenge will raise funds for two local
charities - 'Kates Carers' and 'Breathe Easy'.
Nicki will lead/teach the session with 15 other cyclists
(hopefully more, subject to borrowing more bikes from
Cirencester Leisure Centre).
There was mixed news at the beginning of December. The
Cotswold School’s ’s new Sports Hall would be ready for
community use at the turn of the year, with non- slip floors,
no stacked chairs behind the baseline of the court, high
ceiling, contrasting wall colours with the shuttle….
…at a cost quite a lot more than that we have been used to.
So, its back to the calculator to see what we can afford and
hope we can reach a compromise in order that badminton
can have facilities equal to football and hockey. No one gets
something for nothing – not today – but there is a limit to
what people can afford to pay and there is a demand for
badminton - as witnessed by the 24 players struggling to get
a game in on one court between 7.30 and 8.30pm on the
first evening back after the new year!
2011 - an exciting year for BVCC!
From Mark Arthurs, Chairman
Plans for our new clubhouse are gaining momentum and a brand
new eco-friendly building with a truly sustainable theme will give us
one of the only types of these community buildings in the county.
Please look out for further news on this project.
New FIRST XI captain Tom Arkell hopes to make a huge impact both
on and off the field. After losing a couple of key players through the
winter re-building has started with some familiar faces returning and
new players trialling for a place in the team. Ted Hughes and Ed
Shaw return to strengthen both batting and bowling departments
with Ryan Newhook once again leading the attack along with spinner
Ryan Hill and a couple of potential signings, making BVCC a true
force in The Cherwell league. Zimbabwean batsman Neil Ferreira
returns for his second season at the club, bolstering the top order
along with his fellow countryman Kingsley Went, and 19yr old
Charlie Garrett is looking to improve on his already sparkling career
at BVCC!
The SECOND XI will be led by Will Davies and with a number of new
young signings and our Junior system producing some very exciting
prospects will be looking to win Division 6. Sam Arthurs continues his
Gloucestershire tenure with selection in the U14 squad and will be
looking to impact the 2nd XI. Of course the “old guard” will still be
needed to get the mix of maturity and youth but vice-captain, 16
year old Jack Galpin, will look to continue his excellent record both
with the bat and behind the stumps.
Winter Nets start Sunday 27th February 11-1 pm at the Cotswold
School and continue until we can get outside! All are welcome.
CHANGING ROOM FUND
The year started with ex Liverpool Legend
Jan Molby supporting the club at a Sporting
Evening at the Fire Service College. A great
evening of football stories and comedy saw
over £3000 raised for the Changing Room
Fund. A Bingo event followed with great
support from the regular Bingo goers in
Moreton, and prizes being donated from
many local businesses.
We held a Six A Side Tournament during the
summer which again was well supported by
local teams and in particular the team of
locals from the Black Bear Pub. August bank
holiday weekend saw our 24hour Bike Ride
when on static cycles in Moreton High
Street club members and supporters
covered over a 1000 miles. Our now annual
10k Fun Run took place in October.
During all this time the Changing Rooms
were being built at London Road with the
help of club members donating their skills
and labour to get them completed in time
for the start of the season in September. We
exceeded our expectations in completing
this work in this time, and ensured our
acceptance into the Gloucestershire
Northern Senior League.
As we look back over 2010 it has been a momentous year for the club when we have all pulled together to set the
club up for the future. With the need to build new changing rooms following the fire that destroyed the old ones in
late 2009 we needed to raise funds as quick as possible.
From Martn Jones, Club Secretary
Moreton–in–Marsh
Bowls Club
2010 - a momentous year for the club
Plans to create a new high class green and bowling centre for
Moreton-in-Marsh Bowls Club are at last underway, as work
commences on new facilities, scheduled to be completed in
April 2012.
Founded in 1909, this thriving bowls club currently uses the
green adjacent to Moreton-in-Marsh Hospital on Hospital Road.
The Club moved to this site in 1913, from grounds just across
the road, but after a 98 year residency the land lease drew to a
close, and as a result, the club was faced with losing its home
ground. For only the second time in its 101 year history, the
ON THE PITCH
On the Pitch our First Team won the Cheltenham League First Division by a clear 20
points so were promoted to the Northern Senior League. Our Reserve Team were
runners up in the Stratford Cutler Division so were also promoted. We started a
new Colts team as we had so much interest in playing for the club.
Our Junior Teams continued to provide football for local youngsters with new
teams starting at Under 8 and Under 10 level along with the current Under 11, 13
and 14 teams. We are in particular indebted to Moreton Cricket Club for the use of
pitches for our Junior Teams at their Batsford Road Ground.
So we would like to thank all the businesses, charities and people who have
supported the club over the past 12 months and let’s hope 2011 is a good a year
for Moreton Rangers.
(It will be of no surprise that there is little to report on the football front for
December as the weather put pay to most of Moreton Rangers Teams Games.)
98 years – well bowled!
From Pat Wainwright (patinthecotswolds@live.co.uk)
search began to find an area suitable for the creation of a
quality green and a new clubhouse to enable the club to survive.
With strong support from its 94 members, the various
authorities and local people, the Bowls Club has now secured a
lease from the Town Council, for new grounds behind the Esso
garage on the A429, and embarked on what promises to be an
exciting major development of a new, high class, quality venue.
We are now looking forward to April 2012 and to welcoming old
and new friends.
robbeden@aol.com
Tax doesn’t have to be Taxing – so say HM Revenue & Customs in their
advertising designed to reassure “customers” that filling in lots of complicated
forms is not that bad really. Well for many, collecting all the paperwork &
getting the figures ready is a stressful enough job hence they seek help from an
accountant when filling in Tax Returns etc. The bad weather at the end of last
year added to the problems & for those in business the Vat change was also an
untimely distraction. All in all it’s been a difficult time for business & the longterm
forecast for the economy doesn’t hold out much hope that things will get
better. If your business is struggling it will be worth your while talking things
through with your accountant or bank manager as it’s amazing how things can
quickly turn around once a business or commitments are restructured. It is so
much easier to keep to deadlines, such as getting Vat Returns in on time, when
a business is well organised.
If you’ve already started thinking about self-employment & setting up your own
business then you should consider registering during March as your business
year will then run alongside the Tax Year. At the same time you should think
about how you want your business to operate; for instance will you need to be
registered for Vat, do you need to produce sales invoices, will you be dealing
with a large number of suppliers? If you organise your paperwork & have good
systems in place from day one you will find running a business so much easier.
However, before starting out you should make an appointment to see your
bank’s business manager as it is wise to set up a business account rather than
using your personal account for business transactions. Contacting one of the
local business groups, or the local representative for the National Federation for
the Self-Employed is also a good idea; all will be in a position to give you
helpful advice or put you in touch with people who can give you information.
You should also make an appointment to see an accountant, or a solicitor if
needed, at the earliest opportunity.
