2 Photo Competition LOOK UP – LOOK DOWN – LOOK BEHIND YOU! In the August editions of Stow Times, Moreton Times, BourtonTimes and Chipping NortonTimes we published 52 numbered photographs, all taken recently in the communities where we deliver the magazines every month. The Challenge…. to identify the communities where the photographs were taken and name them correctly. Timetable: The competition closes on 10th September. CHIPPING NORTON TIMES From the Editor Thank goodness for Autumn! After weeks of ‘hit and miss’ weather with temperature swings in double figures, a month or so of anticipated chilly breezes, cool evenings and damp misty mornings will be quite a relief. The chances of choosing the right clothes (and footwear!) at the start of the day increase enormously. As we edge closer to a winter which is forecast to be ‘hard’ our local businesses will become more important, more valuable for being close. Chippy is ahead of the pack here with a good range of retailers for everything from apples to autobiographies, shoes to shampoo. Local businesses – local traders – keep money moving within the communities, which keeps our towns and villages vibrant and interesting places to live. With a tough winter ahead we need to use our local businesses and talk to them about how they can encourage us to visit more often. It may be the range of goods and services – it can be difficult for a smaller business to compete with a large multinational on an out-of-town business park somewhere – except that they have access to us on a regular basis and could be clever at finding out how to provide what we need, what ‘service’ may be expected – and how customers would like to see things presented. A boring shop or tired office, one that tries to tell us what we need, or appears to be closed too frequently, doesn’t invite people to ‘come again’! Prices are frequently put forward as a barrier to shopping locally, but I wonder if it’s easy to ignore the cost of travel in a quick reckoning of cost? It is worth having another look at how much of our shopping is available within say 5 or 10 miles. This autumn we could try keeping more of our money within our community – why pay it away in high motoring costs when local business can help to keep our town vibrant and alive? The weather for delivering the August editions was horrendous – thunder, lightning, gales and downpours. The magazines don’t cope well with rain, so if the one you received through your letterbox a month ago was either late or wet with its pages sticking together, or both, we are really sorry - but we tried! (To those unhappy readers – I do understand your frustration.) With luck we will have better weather this month – and I hope you will enjoy reading this edition. (As a deliverer myself I know that there are times when it seems a thankless task. What would make a huge difference is more help, so that we could get the deliveries made in less time. Could you help? You would receive your copies as soon as they come from the printers, ready to go into your neighbours’ letterboxes – at a time to suit you. Twenty minutes or so of your time would make a difference.)
