‘Treading on Eggshells’
shoes win top prize at ArtsKool 2012
A young artist from Lechlade has won the top prize at Art’s Kool with his amazing piece of Artwork entitled
‘Treading on Eggshells’. The pair of shoes he entered into the ‘Create a Pair of Shoes Fit for Royalty’
competition class took him weeks of hard work at home. Even his art teacher hadn’t seen the piece of work
he submitted. Taking part of a quote from HRH Prince Charles, Harry Barker (13) created an amazing
sculpture of a pair of high heeled shoes covered completely in fragments of egg shells fading in colour from
front to back. On the presentation marble plinth Harry had written ‘Treading on eggshells’.
The shoes were awarded The Nancy McCulloch Memorial Award, a handmade glass trophy created by artist
Helen Slater, and £100 in cash. Harry was delighted with his win which makes him the second winner from
Kingham Hill School to win Art’s Kool’s main competition.
Art’s Kool, the youth Art’s Festival for the Oxfordshire Cotswolds was founded by professional artist and
business woman, Jan Harvey (50). This year’s festival attracted over 90 entries in the eight competitions and
thirty young people attended workshops ranging from sculpture to life drawing. All the work produced for and at the festival was displayed in an
instant exhibition, which comprised 140 pieces of artwork.
Says Jan Harvey: ‘Art’s Kool is a Community Association and is therefore a not for profit organisation. With the exception of our professional tutors
no-one gets paid for their hard work but, on the day, people appear from everywhere to help set up, mount pictures, man the various stands and
welcome visitors. I am indebted to them for their help. Whilst it might be me that drives the Art’s Kool train to the station it is the volunteers who
unload the carriages and make the event happen.’
Art’s Kool is sponsored by The Rooflight Company who are based in Shipton-under-Wychwood where the festival takes place. Other local
businesses sponsor prize money: Howden’s Joinery, Office Organiser, The Flying Press, Carden Interiors and this year, the prize for Class T, ‘The
Wychwood” was donated by Nancy McCulloch’s sister, Mrs. Judy Hand who lives in America.
