CHIPPING NORTON TIMES
From the Editor
We were reminiscing the other day about holidays when we were
at school – aeons ago! Whatever we were doing it’s interesting
how we don’t remember much about the weather – trips to the
beach, that cycle ride across fields when the cows become too
curious, eating a picnic in the car because it hailed – but were the
summers hot, wet, windy? - Can’t remember! Will our families
look back at the photographs of the Diamond Jubilee and
remember the extreme weather - or perhaps, in hindsight, it
won’t seem to have been so extreme.
Both ends of the spectrum were enjoyed (this might not be the
word that everyone would use) in Chippy last month with the
excessive amount of rain that fell, and the amazingly good time
that people had as they celebrated the Diamond Jubilee and
Chipping Norton Festival.
Residents were promised a ‘time to celebrate’ and as the bunting
went up the excitement grew and nothing was going to stop
people celebrating in style. The whole event was a credit to the
hard work of a great team of councillors, businesses and
volunteers, together with their partners the local authorities, the
local police and the district ‘clean up’ team. Regulars say it was
‘the best Festival yet’ as people visited, danced, laughed, played
games, listened and applauded – and applauded!
The weekend was full of memorable moments and people will
have been glad to be here.
July? July is different – and the weather may be different too,
while people are planning days out at fetes, fairs, open gardens,
concerts and shows. This edition of the magazine has pages of
events to tempt you out and about locally and we hope that,
despite the weather, you will have good memories of July 2012!
Best wishes, Jenni Turner
The team grew by 1 for a week last month, and we were delighted to welcome
Amber Goodwin, a Work Experience pupil from South Wilts Grammar School
(Salisbury) who hopes to go into journalism as a career. A small community
magazine is possibly an ‘interesting’ place to start, and we had an enjoyable
and varied week – and worked quite hard. The ‘highlight’ and main piece of
work was an interview with Prue Leith, who generously shared her thoughts
and experiences with Amber (read her interview on pages 14 & 15).
The trusty team of regulars are always appreciated, and my Thanks go to
Christabel Hardacre, Jane Gleghorn and Jan Marley for their help. This month
has more than its share of wonderful photographs with contributions from
Mike Boyes, the Hartley family, Nicky Scott-Frances and Gillian Carr, with the
Diamond Jubilee providing a wonderful excuse. I hope you will enjoy this
edition.
OUR FIRST SHORT STORY COMPETITION : Two Runners-Up
Having published our winning short story last month, we are pleased to share the short stories from both our Runners Up this
month, with comments from Rona Laycock MA, PhD, our judge and a published short story writer and poet
From Rona Laycock: “I would like to thank everyone who entered the competton and for giving me the opportunity to read their
work. Anyone who has tried to write a short story will understand how difficult it is to hit the right note. James Joyce called his
stories ‘epiphanies’, which is the right word for that moment of understanding that a good short story can bring.
A Blissful Farewell appealed to me because of its strong evocaton of place. Anyone who knows the area and Bliss Mill in
partcular will understand why Jack chooses to risk life and limb to dispose of his grandfather’s ashes in such an unusual place.
A Place in the Heart also looked at how an event in the past, in this case an affair between an American GI and a local girl,
has repercussions. Told mostly in the form of a dialogue between two men, this story slowly revealed a tragic event and the change
of atmosphere at the end was very well handled.
8
“Buttercups and daises spread their colourful
blanket over the sleeping folds of the valley and, rising
from the depths, emerged a distinguished ageing monster,
with its high majestic chimney and multitude of eyes
staring out over the town above. Jack sauntered towards
the old mill, his thoughts clouded by memories of long
ago, when this building represented the heartbeat of his
small hometown, known locally as "Chippy". The haunting
hooter no longer called townsfolk to their toil and that
imposing chimney, once sending comforting clouds of
smoke up to the heights of heaven and out into eternity,
breathed no more.
Today, as light began to peep shyly over the
horizon, Jack had an important job to do. For the whole of
his working life, his grandfather Seth had been responsible
for building maintenance at Bliss Tweed Mill. He had
scaled the heights of its commanding chimney on several
occasions and was renowned for his courageous
endeavours. With no safety harness in those days, just
the possession of bold, or possibly foolhardy, pride he had
often spoken of the overwhelming satisfaction of the feat
and the significance of this place in his heart.
Last week, on 1st June 1987, at the magnificent
age of ninety nine, old Seth had drawn his final breath
and, battling with deep sorrow in his loss, Jack's thoughts
turned to the pact he and his grandfather had conspired
to construct. There was no doubt his mission must be
fulfilled but how to execute it was a challenge beyond
belief. What promised to be an ordinary summer's day,
was about to become the most memorable of Jack's life.
Waiting patiently for renovation and conversion
into luxury flats, the grand old mill stood as proud as ever,
although its eyes were dimmed and its heart had faltered.
A whispering breeze seemed to summon support as a
solitary white dove, perching on a branch nearby,
appeared to utter a consoling coo of consent. With a
miraculous rush of valour, Jack began to climb the narrow
rungs of the chimney ladder, heeding his grandfather's
advice never to look back and to focus persistently on his
task. As he reached the central point, he paused to readjust
the pack he carried on his back. Ringing in his ears
A Blissful Farewell : by Pauline Nolan
were the wise words "don't look down" but one simple
glance was a temptation too great.
"Whoah!" he screamed, as every inch of his body
shook and his head felt like it was spinning out of control.
With all the power he could muster, Jack clung to the bars
of his only salvation and with his eyes firmly closed, he
took long, deep breaths in an attempt to regain
composure. For several fearful moments he remained
frozen in a state of limbo, mindful of the danger he faced.
All he could think of was, not the fear of falling, but the
fear of failing, knowing how much this meant to his
precious grandfather. As a single ray of golden light
pierced his body, he spotted the reassuring image of a
ghost-like bird hovering above his head and, seized by a
sudden surge of strength, continued his upward journey
with renewed vigour.
Nearing the summit and gasping for breath, Jack
surveyed the vast treasures of nature that surrounded him
in panoramic splendour, juxtaposed with arguable beauty
of architecture old and new that housed the very soul of
his slumbering town. Unhooking his back-pack and
removing the box within, he said a little prayer as he
disposed of its contents in the gaping mouth of the
chimney. Suddenly the sky erupted with the full glory of a
new dawn and Jack's heart almost burst with pride. His
grandfather was right, this was such a unique feeling,
made even more special by the promise he had fulfilled.
Knowing old Seth's ashes were finally laid to rest in his
beloved chimney made the downward journey a time for
solemn reflection, as he become one with the spirit of his
hero.
Once on solid ground, Jack wandered back over
the common with a contented glow and, as he turned to
wave a final farewell, joyous puffs of white smoke
emerged from the chimney, gently kissing the atmosphere
as they ascended. Then, in an act of glorious love, every
murky window sparkled as bursts of sunlight opened their
eyes to the world. A lone dove cooed in harmony with
morning's sweet chorus and the hearts of both Jack and
Seth began to sing again! “
A Place In The Heart : by Richard Vaughan-Davies
There was more than a touch of spring in the air as I walked up
Moreton High Street to the White Hart for my usual evening
pint. Yellow, red and white crocuses were dotted like confetti
under the trees by the cobbles, and the daffodils were proudly
showing off their newly minted gold on the grass verges.
As I took my corner seat in the Snug with my pint of
Hooky, I nodded to an old man sitting up very straight at one of
the tables, apparently waiting for his meal to be served. From
his dress and general appearance I took him for an American,
and when we exchanged pleasantries his speech confirmed it.
“Are you on holiday, then?” I asked. “Long vacation,
sure. Staying right here in the White Hart.“ He took a sip of his
lager, and wrinkled his nose slightly. Not cold enough for him, I
guessed. “Yessir, no time limit these days.” He laughed. “Unless
the Almighty deems differently, of course! Nearly ninety’s a
good age.”
“Any particular reason why you’ve come to Moreton,
then?” He took his time replying. “It’s in the Heart of England,
they say. And it’s sure got a place in my heart too.”
I was intrigued, and looked at him inquiringly. He was
ready to talk, as old men often are. He looked at me directly,
with his blue eyes. “Ever heard of the US Sixth Armored
Division, son? The Super Sixth?”
“Yes – they were stationed here during the war,
weren’t they?”
“Sure were. Came over from Kentucky in January ‘forty
four. Getting us trained for D Day, they said.” He chuckled.
“Though in the end we never went. Probably why ah’m still alive
and talking to yo-all today!”
I tried to draw him out. Nearly all the witnesses to the
county’s wartime past were dead now, and firsthand accounts
were precious. “What about the boys at the RAF airport?” I
asked. “The bomb squadrons. Did you know them? Is it true
Bomber Harris himself came here to plan the destruction of
Dresden?”
He thought back nearly seventy years. “I don’t know
too much about all that. We didn’t really mix with those guys.
But yeah, we used to see a few of them in the Wellington, down
the road here. Closed now, I believe?” He leaned across the
table towards my corner and dropped his voice. “They didn’t
like us much, I guess. We were after their girls, you see!” A sly
smile crept over his face. “And we got ‘em too, specially some
of our coloured guys. The women really went for them.” His first
course had arrived now, but he carried on talking. “I was only
twenny four, and never bin outta Kentucky till then. And boy, did
I have a good time in this town. With one particular ladi-eee, as
it happens. I was a bit too shy to play the field much in those
days.”
“What was her name?”
“Molly,” he said, spooning up his soup. “She was the
prettiest lil’ redhead you ever did see.”
The bar had filled up now, and I had to move closer to
his table to hear him.
“What happened? ”
“Well, she and I got kinda close, if you get my meaning.
But the Division got moved on down south that July, waiting for
the big push. I wrote once and she wrote back a coupla times
but after that things got real busy and that was that. I never saw
her again. Other towns, other girls….” I asked him if I could buy
him a drink, and he refused. I got up and went over to the bar.
“Another pint of the usual, Ginger?” asked the barman. I said yes.
It had got colder. The hotel had obviously decided that
as spring was here, they didn’t need to light the logs in the great
fireplace, but I wished they had.
I bit my lip. Molly was my grandmother’s name. My
father had never known his mother, who had hanged herself a
month after he was born. Her body was found swinging in a
barn at Holly Farm, with a note pinned to her body saying she
couldn’t go on - the shame was too much. She asked her sister
to look after the baby for her. The matter was never discussed in
my family, and all references to Molly had been wiped away. My
mother had whispered to me once that she’d been ‘a bad lot.’
When I returned, the old man had been served with his fish
course. “Let me guess,” I said. “You’ve come back to see if you
can find her, right? But now she’s a just little white haired old
lady in a nursing home, who can’t remember her own name, let
alone yours? Am I right?” I held my breath. But he didn’t smile.
“She was the nicest person I ever met,” he said quietly. “Honest,
decent, funny too – my Gawd, how we used to laugh together.
And she had legs like Betty Grable’s, and …” His hands
wordlessly described a full bosom. “Never met anybody like her,
before or since.”
There was a silence, then after a while he continued
with his meal.
“No, I haven’t found her,” he said. “Been here a week
now. I’ve asked around everywhere, the records office, the
church – the young curate’s been very helpful – the Town Hall.
Nothing. It’s kinda like she’s vanished off the face of the earth.”
He stared at his plaice and chips as if he hadn’t seen them
before.
“She’s still got a place in my heart though.”
He suddenly let out a tremendous cackle that made the
men at the bar pause their conversation and look round.
“And now I’m having a plaice in the Hart! Hah! Kinda
neat, huh?”
His laughter rang hollowly in my ears all the way home,
as darkness fell.
REVIEW
Held Up by Christopher Radman
Hardback at £12.99
This novel works superbly in so many ways. The plot is
gripping, the subject matter rare and enlightening, the characters
always believable and the writing fizzes with intelligence and
leaping, unexpected connections. Even the title has several
layers to it. What’s it about? In South Africa, a recent recruit to
an ad agency, Paul, drives out in his new BMW, only to be
hijacked and dumped in the road as the car drives off. Only
then, does he remember that his precious baby daughter is still
in the car. That’s the first 10 pages and 1 minute of the tale. The
next 11 years concerns his search for his child and perhaps for
himself as he rapidly heads towards insanity. It is a thriller and a
moving love story, of a man for his child and his country. Any
more than that, you will have to read for yourself - I’m giving
no more of this brilliant book away. However, the South African
author might for he tells you about the book at
Chocolate Shoes and Wedding Blues by Trisha Ashley
Paperback at £6.99
Six months ago I was enthusing aboutThe Magic of Christmas
by this author and here we are, in the middle of summer (!) and
Trisha has another cosy tale to tell. Tansy Poole leaves her long
term partner, Justin, on discovering his guilty secret and goes
make Tansy forget, if only Justin would let her and she throws
herself into running the shop selling specialist wedding shoes
and shoe shaped chocolates. ‘Home’ is the village of
Sticklepond where we meet old friends from previous books and
Tansy meets her next door neighbour, an old flame. OK. So
much is predictable but thereare surprises and Trisha’s writing
always seems like a personal letter rather than a book. An
enjoyable and amusing love story with recipes.
The Mystery of Wickworth Manor by Elen Caldecott
Paperback at £5.99
When stree-twise Paige Owens, on first arriving for a week at
Wickworth Manor with her friends, first meets a rather
unhappy, lonely boy, Curtis Okafor, she thinks him too posh
and serious for her. However, soon the pair become friends and
find themselves on the trail of a ghost, secret tunnels and hidden
treasure. If it sounds too Blytonesque, it has some fresh ideas on
display including a little gentle history lesson about the slave
trade. It deals with bullying and unusual friendships and racism
in a subtle way and the writing makes all the characters come
alive. It would be nice to think that Paige and Curtis have more
than one outing together. A good, funny adventure story for
youngsters with a generous helping of thoughtful realism.
Managing our Heritage
The Trustees at St Edwards Hall are taking a
serious look at managing the collection of
paintings, books armour gifted to Stow on the
Wold by Captain Christie Crawfurd.
The Captain Christie Crawfurd English Civil War Collection is an
interesting collection of paintings of Charles I, his court, family
and prominent Royalist supporters, including religious figures,
portraits of Oliver Cromwell and some of Parliament’s
supporters. It was given to the town of Stow-on-the-Wold by
Captain Christie Crawfurd (1859–1948), who had assembled a
collection of Civil War books, paintings and armour. The books
are held in the county archives but the paintings and armour
are at Stow.
The Trustees have already established an on-going project for
the conservation and restoration, as necessary, of the
paintings and have been considering the management of
the collection - with a view to possibly making it more
accessible to the public and students of the Civil War period.
Contacting the Ironbridge Institute (allied to Birmingham
University) earlier this year they met Laura Packer, studying
for a Masters in Heritage Management. Cataloguing The
Christie Crawfurd Collection with as much detail as possible
and pulling together all the various information available
(using the Collectify software) would provide Laura with the
project she needed for her Masters, and provide the
Trustees with a fully catalogued collection and a forward
plan. A six-week project was agreed and Laura completed
the catalogue and Forward Plan
last month.
St Edwards Hall is home to the
Library Service on the ground
Floor (with increasing hours since
the closure of library services in
Bourton on the Water and
Moreton in Marsh), while the first
floor hosts many club meetings as
well as fundraising events, fairs,
exhibitions and civic presentations.
It is well booked and the Hall’s
income covers its running costs.
The Trustees are now considering
how to make the Collection
available to more people, creating
a booklet/guide to the Collection,
with open days to encourage
visitors and a dynamic website
linked to the Public Catalogue Foundation, where photographs of all the
painting can be seen. Making the Collection more available will enable the
Trustees to seek further funding to help develop the project further and
complete the restoration of paintings, as required.
Meanwhile, the Trustees thank Laura for her work cataloguing the Collection
and hope that she achieves her Masters in Heritage Management.
THELASTFEWHOURSOFENZOTHEBOATMAN
AShortStorybyNicholasJohn-Part1
The cat sat high on the window ledge and surveyed the
morning as it came to Wied Zurrieq. The heat of the day
rose early, the men preparing their boats before breakfast,
working on the brightly-painted, wooden vessels, tinkering
with motors and wielding paintbrushes, until the
punishing glare of the Mediterranean sun forced them
into the cafes for coffee and breadcakes.
The cat licked its paws lazily, ignoring the gentle
movement of the dirty curtains, as what breeze there was
stirred in the morning air. The sounds of activity from the
harbour grew steadily louder and Enzo struggled with
sleep beneath a thin, cotton sheet, as the day kicked its
way into his consciousness. The cat stretched and jumped
from the window ledge, down onto the bed.
"Go away, get out of here!" Enzo feebly kicked out,
but the cat was skilled in avoiding his clumsy lunges. After
all, it practised every morning. It yawned and emitted a
half meow, half squawk, its call for breakfast. Enzo
groaned, a low rumble that began deep in his chest and
finally escaped through cracked lips. His head hurt and his
mouth was drier than the Maltese summer; the effect of
last night's wine. Opening his eyes, he cursed at the light
angling into the room through the gap in the curtains. It
was a conspiracy to bedevil him. The penetrating blue of
the sky showed no fleck, nor promise, of white cloud.
He flung an ineffectual arm at the cat, who easily
avoided the flailing limb and resumed an impatient
mewing. Enzo swore; the damn animal must have got in
through the open window. Same as every morning. It was
all a conspiracy he thought again, a plot: his two-room flat,
on the third-floor of a tenement building in the Luba
district of the town, situated high above the harbour, had
no shutters to keep out the bright, harsh, morning sun or
the unwelcome attentions of his persistent early visitor.
How it made it to his tiny, third-floor flat was a mystery to
Enzo, but make it, it did, in search of breakfast. If he
stopped letting the cat feast on the remains of whatever
was in the noisily whirring fridge, then it would soon find
itself another source of nourishment. It was a scavenger
this cat, all cats! But, in truth, he was glad of the company;
it made waking alone in this cramped, uncomfortable
hovel just about bearable.
He pushed himself upright in bed and rubbed a leathery,
cracked hand across his forehead. The wine. He should
stop drinking quite so much wine.
* * * * *
The white-washed houses tumbled down towards
the Plaza, the cobbled streets dropping through the
terraces, twisting and turning till they met at the main
square. The Plaza Maskala was the centre of Zurrieq, a
large, concrete expanse, unattractive in design and
unappealing in appearance. A few scattered palm trees
afforded some shade from the sun and, on the steps of the
18
Church De Santa Rosa, the beggars were already vying for
the best positions.
The boatmen gathered this, and every morning, in
the cafes and bars that lined the square, smoking and
drinking thick, black coffee. Their colourful boats were tied
up in rows alongside the long quay in the harbour,
awaiting the morning trade - awaiting the first coaches as
they arrived, winding down the steep main road into
town, sunlight glinting on metal and glass. A steady
stream, mainly from Valletta, drawing up in the town
square, disgorging lines of camera-hugging tourists and
visitors. The boatmen would quickly extinguish their
cigarettes, stubbed onto stone - their sharply-coloured
shirts suddenly busy alongside sharply-coloured boats,
smiles of welcome on their lips. And the Mediterranean
sun climbed ever higher.
* * * * *
Frankie and Jazz had, it's fair to say, overdone
things the night before. It was no surprise that they'd
missed joining the Intersun excursion to the Blue Grotto,
when it'd left from outside the Hotel Splendide in the
capital at eight-thirty sharp. Frankie didn't give a toss
about caves and would rather have slept off her hangover,
but Jazz was keen to see the Grotto, so they'd eventually
arrived in Zurrieq with spirits dampened by what had been
a hot and bumpy ride - not inside an air-conditioned coach
with toilet facilities, but in a local bus that had first seen
use on the island in the seventies. Even in the relative cool
of the morning, it's red, plastic seats burned to the touch
and had stuck to their naked legs.
The bus pulled to a stop alongside a line of tourist
coaches parked in the Plaza. A few white-shirted drivers
stood in the shade of the palms, smoking and talking.
Stray dogs ran loose in the square, and elderly ladies,
dressed in black, ascended the steep steps up to the
Church. It wasn't a scene to fill Frankie with enthusiasm.
"Jesus! I could've still been in bed, Jazz! Let's
forget the sodding caves and get a drink. What a dump,
there isn't even a beach here -"
Jazz laughed, pulled her friend by the arm and
they clattered down the steps of the bus.
* * * * *
Enzo belched and drained his cup. He'd been late
getting out of the house, slowed by his pounding head,
and he'd missed the first coaches: they were already
parked up in the square. Just one coffee, that was all, but
it had cleared his mind, thankfully. He threw some coins
onto the counter and followed a couple of boys out of the
little bar. They were dropping crumbs from the sweet,
fruited breadcakes they were biting into, and he felt
(Contnued from previous page) hungry. How many Euros
had he got left? Not enough for him to eat, not yet. And
he was late again. He'd failed to find a clean shirt
anywhere in the flat and the old, blue one he'd worn for
the past two days was heady with the sour odour of
sweat, stains discolouring the armpits. He slicked his hair
back, then checked the pockets of his shabby, black
trousers for his cigarettes and lighter. Tonight, he'd get
home earlier, get some proper sleep, so that maybe
tomorrow….. He brightened: maybe today would be a
good day after all, maybe some more English ladies would
come, tottering on their high-heels, with their short, white
skirts and short, white legs. He walked quickly along the
quay to where the "Marianne" was tied-up.
* * * * *
Being of Irish extraction, Frankie's natural pigment
firmly refused to brown in the way she wanted. Some
uncomfortable-looking red patches were the dismal result
of five days of summer sun - not what she was hoping for
when compared to Jazz's olive skin and natural tan. She
shaded her eyes from the sun.
Over in the little quayside office, Jazz was talking
to the Intersun rep, but it was clear they had missed the
boat out to the Grotto. The tourist ferry "Katarina" was
well on her way by now: the round-trip took about an
hour and a half, before lunch in Zurrieq, followed by the
short coach journey along the coast to the temples at
Mnajdra. And they'd paid in advance! What a bloody
waste of time it had been so far….. She sighed. Jazz would
still want to go – and they had spent half the morning
getting here anyway. She looked around: there'd be other
boat trips and they had plenty of Euros between them.
In the harbour and along the quay, boats moved on the
swell, the larger ones with decks shielded by loose, blue
awnings. Every fishing boat, every luzzu, was painted with
the ever-watchful, unblinking Egyptian Eye of Osiris,
painted high on its prow, to ward away evil spirits.
* * * * *
Most of the smaller boats had pulled away from
the quay, on their first run of the day, the sound of
outboard motors filling the air, the blue haze of the twostroke
diesel rising in clouds as passengers hunched in the
gunnels, clutching sunhats to heads, cameras to eyes, and
the boatmen expertly manoeuvred their vessels out
toward open water. The "Katarina" was almost out of sight
beyond the headland, her rails lined with people.
Enzo spat noisily into the water and flicked a boot
at the peeling paint on the side of his boat - her best days
were long behind her, but the early morning repair work
was not for him. No, there would always be an elderly
German couple or some tall, Scandinavian girls happy to
take his boat, no matter how late. No visitors ever came to
Zurrieq except to take the boat excursion to the Blue
Grotto, and take it they would, even if only in
the "Marianne." He scratched his backside, lit another
cigarette and waited for whatever, whoever, the morning
might bring.
To be contnued…….Nicholas John
GUITING FESTIVAL JULY 27 –AUGUST 4TH
guitingfestival.org
Every summer there is an abundance of music in the Cotswold Hills. Most people have heard of the Cheltenham Festival
but close on its heels during the last week of July there is a much more intimate festival which deserves equally to be
enjoyed. It takes place off the beaten track in the village of Guiting Power. Those who know of it look forward all year to
this professionally staged event in the excellent village hall.
Nine concerts are offered. These concerts cover the many aspects and styles of music, from a piano recital by our
president, Joanna MacGregor, to an outdoor Sunday lunch concert of jazz. Food can be ordered with concert tickets.
The audience can bring their own picnic, buy light suppers in the marquee before concerts or order an after concert 2
course evening meal (numbers limited). Solos, duos, trios, quartets, quintets of brass, woodwind, strings and percussion,
including one evening of music on the lighter side, provide a broad selection.
This is a real village event. The young are encouraged to help in the festival organization, from controlling the parking
and acting as ushers in the hall to presenting gifts to the artists.
Each evening during the interval one can wander into the field, sip a relaxing glass of wine and talk to other
enthusiasts you haven’t seen since the previous Festival. You can watch the progress of the harvest on the gentle slopes
of the hills opposite, eagerly anticipating the next half of yet another excellent performance while swallows’ wheel and
cry overhead.
There is an art exhibition in the Hall throughout the festival. This exhibition is
arranged by a separate organisation. The art is for sale.
Caroline Ritson wins The Big Oxfordshire Artweeks Poll
The people of Oxfordshire voted Caroline Ritson’s work
‘Greenman found on Wittenham Clumps’ as the image which
captures the spirit of Oxfordshire in The Big Oxfordshire
Artweeks Poll run by local web publisher, Artistpublisher.com.
Jane Tomlinson’s work ‘Towards Uffington’ came second and
Anna Dillon’s work ‘Devil’s Delight’ came third. More than 600
votes were placed between 2nd April and 27th May mainly online
at www.artistpublishers.com and in person at The Jam Factory
in Oxford. You can buy the winners wonderful pictures of
Oxfordshire as well as the other 27 entrants work in
greeting card or print formats from www.artistpublishers.com.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Oxfordshire Artweeks,
Artistpublishers.com launched an Oxfordshire-wide public vote
for a piece of work being exhibited during Artweeks which
summed up living in the county. 30 artists taking part in
Oxfordshire Artweeks submitted a work of their choice – not
necessarily a landscape but an image that captured the spirit of
the county. Work in a variety of mediums was submitted
including photography, paintings, wood carving and
embroidery. Caroline Ritson exhibited at Chipping Norton
Theatre from 5-12 May as part of the 2012 Oxfordshire
Artweek.
Caroline is inspired by the myth of the greenman, painting in
rich detail the faces that she finds in hedgerows and foliage,
working mainly in Acrylic, layering and texturing her work.
HOLST’S PIANO PIECE
RE-DISCOVERED
For years the manuscript of a piano piece by the great
Gloucestershire composer Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934), who wrote
The Planets, languished in the darkness of a library - but now A
Piece for Yvonne is being published for the first time. The piece was
written in 1924 for an 8 year old girl called Yvonne O’Neill who was
the daughter of respected musicians in London whom Holst knew.
Judging by the marks on the manuscript (in the Britten- Pears
Library, Aldeburgh, Suffolk) it was played by Yvonne before being
lost in obscurity, unlisted even by the composer. However,
Raymond Head of Chipping Norton, a well known Holst scholar
teacher and composer, who appeared in a recent BBC TV film by
Tony Palmer about the composer, decided that other people should
have the enjoyment of playing it and so has published it. It is a
fascinating and delightful piece that should appeal to young and old
alike – it is quite easy - and is in an attractive dance style although
written in 7 beats in a bar!
The piece sheds new light on this fascinating and modest composer
– at the time Holst was suddenly becoming famous through the
worldwide success of The Planets - yet he could still take the time to
compose something special for the daughter of a friend. A Piece for
Yvonne - published by Sky Dance Press - available from
Blackwell’s, Oxford and Holst Birthplace Museum, Cheltenham.
Closed for lunch 12.15 – 1pm
West Oxon District Council are proposing to develop a household recycling centre,
subject to planning, at Greystones, a former council depot on the outskirts of
Chipping Norton - and they are asking the public for thoughts on the proposals.
Residents are invited to go along and find out more about the proposals at any of
the following informal drop-in consultation events:
• Chipping Norton - Town Hall on Thursday 5 July from 12 noon to 8pm.
• Chipping Norton - Leisure Centre on Saturday 7 July from 9am to 1pm.
• Charlbury - The Corner House, Market Street on Thursday 12 July from 12 noon
to 8pm.
Staff will be on hand to talk through the suggested plans and answer questions.
Feedback from the consultation will help develop any future planning application.
If you cannot attend any of the consultation events but would like to find out more,
detailed information will be available online at www.westoxon.gov.uk/greystones
from Monday 2 July.
Or call 01993 861420.to request a printed copy. Consultation ends Friday 20 July
2012.
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the Environment said, "Local residents are
keen recyclers and since the closure of Dean Pit, we have been exploring how we
could provide a new facility for residents living in the north of the District. We
believe that creating a household recycling centre at Greystones would provide a
useful service for householders in Chipping Norton and the surrounding area, but
before going ahead we are asking residents as we want to be sure that this is what
they want."
Cllr Simon Hoare, Cabinet Member for Resources said, "We are convinced that this
will be a good use for what is, in essence, a redundant piece of land in the Council's
ownership. I hope that lots of people will come and see the plans and give their
views as this will help shape our planning application."
In November Thames Valley Police Constabulary introduced
number. Our current non-emergency number 0845 090
1234 will be phased out. Calls will cost 15p irrespective of
how long that call may last, on landlines and mobiles.
Call 999 In an emergency, such as when a crime is in
progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is
being used or threatened.
New Police and Crime Panel
An opportunity to be involved in new
police accountability arrangements
On the 15 November 2012, the Thames Valley will be
electing its first Police and Crime Commissioner
(PCC) who will be responsible for setting the
priorities and resources for Thames Valley Police, as
well as supporting broader community safety
activities across the region.
Police and Crime Panel
Alongside this a Police and Crime Panel will also be
established to scrutinise the work of the PCC. The
purpose of this role is to assist the PCC through
providing independent challenge as a critical friend.
The Panel will be made up of one representative
from each of the 18 local authorities in the force
area, and two independent co-opted members.
The Panel is looking for two committed and
energetic people who either live or work within the
Thames Valley to serve as co-opted independent
members from Autumn 2012 for a four year term.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved from
the start of new and very different arrangements for
reducing crime and disorder.
This is an important and high profile role. It is
expected that this the time commitment would be
approximately one day a month, including
preparation and travel time.
Meetings will be held at varying locations
throughout the Thames Valley (in the historic county
areas of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and
Oxfordshire). All Panel members will receive
induction and other appropriate training.
Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.
For a copy of the application pack look online -
www.buckscc.gov.uk/scrutiny
or telephone Clare Gray on 01296 383610.
The closing date for applications is 13 July 2012.
The Panel wishes to reflect the breadth of
communities in the Thames Valley and welcomes
applications from all eligible people irrespective of
gender, ethnic origin, religious belief, sexual
orientation, disability, age or other factor.
28
Local authorities have a duty to promote and maintain high
standards of conduct amongst their councillors and coopted
members.
We need two people, who are independent of the council,
who can bring a measure of experience and common sense
to handling complex and sometimes contentious issues
surrounding the activities of our councillors.
The council has adopted a new Code of Conduct and new
arrangements for handling complaints will shortly be in
place. The 'Independent Person' plays an important role in
this. You will be working closely with the Council's
Monitoring Officer, who will need to formally consult you
with regards to how matters should be handled.
Here we are in July & we’re still talking penalties!! No, not football - we’re
talking about the huge number of penalty notices that have been issued. The
bulk have been issued simply because a number of reminders have been
ignored but a fair few are simply wrong. For instance, I was recently contacted
by a new company who set-up a payroll in the last week of March this year.
Both they & I were surprised when they received an interim penalty warning
swiftly followed by a P35 payroll end of year form – in June! There has been
much publicity about the huge amount HMRC is receiving from issuing these
notices but I am surprised that careful checks are not being made before some
notices are issued.
Don’t be caught out – inspectors from HMRC are on the prowl & they could be
heading in your direction so make sure you deal with any paperwork or your Tax
Return in good time or pass this onto your accountant to deal with. It makes
sense – if you file your Returns early you’ll know well in advance how much you
need to pay. A lot of people are leaving it later & later each year, a few even
bring in their paperwork during the last week of January; this not only puts huge
pressure on accountants but it means that some have to find a hefty amount of
tax in a short space of time. If you do have to complete a self-assessment Tax
Return the sooner this is filed the better.
Last year at this time I mentioned that a number of long-established local
businesses were on the verge of shutting up shop. Well, as we know, many
have & there are many more to come. It is sad to see shops boarded up & to
see familiar faces disappear but it’s an inevitable result of huge changes
brought about by the worldwide recession. In my article last year I suggested
that supporting local business could help. Much has been said about this but
it’s only when a handy business has gone that you realise just how handy it
was. Yes, shopping on the internet is cheaper but is it creating local jobs? Yes,
petrol is cheaper at the supermarkets but how far will you have to drive to fillup
in an emergency if all our local filling stations closed? There is no doubt that
the business model is changing rapidly & that certain business need to shake
themselves into the modern world but it is up to all of us to ensure that our
local economy is vibrant so that there are jobs for local people & that businesses
have an incentive to locate to this area.
Should you require help with your accounts, payroll, Vat or any other aspect of
taxation you should either contact your accountant or give me a ring for free
telephone advice.
Carrying the torch
What you can do when you put your mind to it!
By Katrina Harrison, Stow
The 9th of June was a day I will never forget as I was privileged
to carry the Olympic Torch in my birth town Glasgow. I was
nominated as a result of the fundraising I’ve done for UNICEF
by running two marathons in two months (never having run a
marathon before!)
It all started two years ago in May 2010 when I had a major
operation which normally takes about 3 months to recover
from but as soon as I felt well enough (after about 10 weeks) I
started working with my trainer Ed Shaw at the Cotswolds
Health and Fitness Club, gradually increasing the amount of
exercise I was doing. It wasn’t long before I was able to do an
hour’s exercise interspersed with short gentle runs.
My overall recovery suffered a set back when I slipped and fell
on a very wet walkway in Paddington Station and sustained a
complicated fracture in my right hand which meant I had to
undergo several more operations. This meant Ed had to get
creative with my work outs so lower body and running took the
place of hand and arm exercises!
In April 2011 I went to see the spectacle that is the London
Marathon and when I saw the numerous shapes, sizes and ages
of the people taking part I thought to myself “I could maybe do
that”! I chatted with Ed about it and he agreed I could and so
my training began in earnest. I applied for a place and was
successful. By the end of 2011 I had run three half marathons,
much to my amazement.
As the London Marathon is one of the worlds biggest fund
raising events I decided to run for UNICEF and raise funds for
the amazing work they do for the poorest children around the
world, giving them a chance to live as children should. I set up
my fundraising page and as soon as I did friends, family and
workmates started pledging amazing amounts of money and
I’m thrilled to say I made it to the finish line and in doing so
raised over £4,000 for UNICEF.
Not content with that I was talked into entering the Edinburgh
Marathon and whilst I thought it would be a good ‘fall back’ in
the event something happened that meant I could not
compete in London I secretly hoped I could actually do both!
On the day of the marathon the sun was blazing and
temperatures did not fall below 26 degrees but I am thrilled to
say I not only finished but knocked 30 minutes off my running
time for London. Not bad for a 50 year old who had never run
a marathon before! It shows what can be done when you put
your mind to it and with help of local experts like Ed my trainer
and Richard Rasdall of The Honey Pot, who is the best sports
masseuse I have ever encountered!
So having done two long runs it was great to take part in the
Olympic Torch relay. It was one run I really looked forward to,
in fact, it just wasn’t long enough!
raising page is fundraise.unicef.org.uk/MyPage/Katrina-
Free trial at local gym helps you banish the
exercise demons!
It’s not always easy to motivate yourself to exercise. Lots of people
get stuck in a rut, eating and drinking too much, working too much
and generally not looking after themselves. The result is stress,
weight gain, aches and pains. You might not be quite sure how to
break this cycle, how to eat better or what exercise you can do to
help.
But we do. We will make you feel better – in all sorts of ways. But we
don’t want you to just take our word for it – we want you to be able to
come and try it for yourself - for free. A full, free personal training
session. We’ll discuss your lifestyle, your diet and your goals (perhaps
you want to lose weight, run further, walk up the stairs without losing
your breath or recover from an injury). We’ll work out the right
exercise routines for you, and show you how to do them.
If you feel better then we can talk more about how we can help you in
long term. There are several options. If you don’t like it, just walk away.
No cost to you, no harm done. No risk. If you’re a bit unsure, feel free to
bring a friend along or we can arrange a session when the gym is quiet.
Whatever suits you.
Bourton-based Windrush Fitness brings the “Piloxing Party” to the Cotswolds
Yes, you read that word right... PILOXING! PILOXING uniquely blends the power, speed and agility of boxing with the beautiful
sculpting and flexibility of Pilates. It is a fat torching, muscle sculpting, core-centric interval workout “guaranteed to whip you into
shape”. Using the most current science, PILOXING incorporates formats such as interval and barefoot training to burn maximum
calories and increase stamina.
The brainchild of Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer Viceca Jensen, PILOXING has a devoted Hollywood following, including
Hilary Duff, Heather Morris, Melissa McCarthy, Kirsten Dunst and Vanessa Hudgens to name just a few. In 2010 Viveca founded
the PILOXING academy which has so far trained over 2000 instructors worldwide, including Windrush Fitness, Lucy Davis.
Lucy told us: “I discovered PILOXING in a newspaper article about the latest Hollywood fitness crazes. I love boxing and I teach
Callanetics, which has a lot in similar with PIlates, and was curious about how the combination would work together - so I ordered
one of Viveca’s DVDs. I have never had so much fun doing a high energy workout in my life...and never sweated so much either! I
immediately contacted the Academy about becoming a trainer.”
New to the summer timetable, Windrush Fitness recently held open taster classes at their studio in Bourton-on-the-Water to
show their current clientele what it was all about. “Love it, love it, love it!” and “that was so much fun!” are just a couple of the
student comments after just 1 class. With 4 classes a week on the timetable there are times to suit everyone so why not come
and join the “PILOXING party!”.
The Welsh Connection
Many followers of football in Moreton will remember
the sad end to Moreton Town as a football club in
1994. The Town team had played in the Hellenic
League since 1970 winning the League on 4 occasions
and were the current title holders when the folded.
One bizarre event during their existence was the 1989-
90 season when welsh team Newport County shared
the London Road ground with them.
Newport County AFC history describes this time in
their existence after they were reformed following
their expulsion from football in 1988 where they
became the” exiles”. They have now agreed to return
to Moreton for a pre- season friendly to play our
Moreton Rangers Team on Friday 13th July 2012. Now
a Blue Square Conference Team they were finalists at
Wembley in the F.A.Trophy this season. Managed by
ex-Spurs player Justin Edinburgh this will be a big test
for our lads playing this team one step from League
football. For full details see advert.
Moreton Rangers Under 10 Team (pictured) were
awarded the Fair Play Award at the recent Witney and
their opponents on Fair Play at each game they play
season. Congratulations to the players and Coach
Shaun Goddard for the award which shows they have
behaved well on the pitch and shown respect to the
MORETON-IN-MARSH BOWLS CLUB
Following the euphoria and general excitement which had
accompanied the opening of the new clubhouse and green
there was, in contrast, only a few days afterwards, a
respectful sadness as members paused to remember Relph
Willis and Jack Strong who passed away recently. Relph had
been associated with Moreton-in-Marsh Bowls Club for
about thirty years. For much of that time he was responsible
for the upkeep of the green and its surrounds. A very good
player himself, Relph was also a National Umpire and often
gave up his time to talk to Club members about the rules
and etiquette of the game. He was Chairman for several
years in the 1980`s during which time important changes
were made to the clubhouse and green.
Jack`s grandfather had been a founder member of the Club
in 1909 and when Jack joined in the late 1980`s he became
the last in a long line of family members who played on the
green on Hospital Road. Towards the end of his life he
battled against poor eyesight but that did not prevent him
from bowling regularly and often with a remarkable degree
of accuracy! It is such a disappointment that neither Relph
nor Jack was able to bowl on the new green.
Despite the dreadful weather at the beginning of the season
when several games had to be cancelled the Club has made
a very encouraging start, losing only 6 of 29 matches. The
highlight has undoubtedly been the visit of a team from
Bowls England which was beaten by a strong Moreton side.
In addition to that, there has already been a notable event
on the new green when the first “hot shot”, a comparatively
rare occurrence in the game, took place during a match
against a team from Porters. This is achieved when, on any
end, all the bowls belonging to one team finish nearer to the
jack than any one of their opponents` bowls.
foundations for what will hopefully be a promotion-winning
season this year.
Touch rugby sessions have begun and continue every Thursday
evening at 7pm until the 28th June - everyone is welcome to
play so come along if you are interested. Thanks to the glorious
British weather the first session was a little damp, however a
good number of players attended and proved their talent,
showing some impressive skills!
Pre-season training is scheduled to begin on 3rd July and will
take place every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter, focussing on
match plays and tactics, as well as some much-needed
conditioning! Stow are aiming to start the season with a strong
performance in their first game against Chipping Norton on the
8th September. The prospect of facing their local rivals in the
season’s opener is proving an effective motivator for the Stow
squad.
If you would like to get involved at the club then new players,
supporters and sponsors are always welcome please phone
Stow on the Wold Cricket Club
Saturday 2nd June vs Chedworth –
WON
An away trip to last year’s league runners up
Chedworth, and with a damp outfield and light
drizzle, the toss was crucial - Chedworth won
and chose to bowl. A good choice early on as
Stow’s openers had trouble playing the wicket
due to a variable bounce. The track seemed to
play better in the middle period of Stow’s
innings with a 78 run partnership between Dan
Smith and Lewis Chapman improving Stow’s
position – the run rate was creeping up and
these 2 batsmen looked set to push Stow to a
big total. Dan was first to lose his wicket, out for
a well-deserved 61, before Lewis fell for 31.
Stow’s lower order were then set loose to do
some ‘slogging’. Seb Bevan took full advantage
with a superb 35 off 19 balls to catapult Stow up
to a score of 188 off their 40 overs.
Chedworth got going straight away with a strong
opening partnership of 62. Some great bowling
from Dan Heaps (3-29) dismissed both openers,
and Stow started to get on top of the match.
Ashley Andrews dismissed 3 of the middle order
for 37setting up a close finish to the game as
Chedworth’s middle order were consistently
scoring. Dan Smith, 2-40, and Seb Bevan, 2-25,
wrapped things up at the end and Stow bowled
out Chedworth 14 runs short of their total.
A very important win, against a team who will
be pushing to finish high up the league again
this year.
Saturday 9th June vs NATS
WON
Stow hosted NATS this week and were
lucky to get a game on with the
amount of rain that had fallen in the
week. A damp wicket meant the toss
was crucial. Stow won it and asked
NATS to bat. Stow’s bowlers got stuck
in straight away and Hayden Elsdale
bowled a great spell taking 3 early
wickets for only 5 runs off his 7 overs.
NATS never got their run rate going
and looked to be really struggling
against the Stow bowling attack. Seb
Bevan was the first change and
completely destroyed the NATS middle
and lower order. He ripped through
them taking 5 wickets for 10 runs off
his 8 overs - this was Seb’s first 5
wicket haul for the club and well
deserved. Stow’s great bowling and
good fielding meant they bowled NATS
out for only 50.
In reply, Stow’s openers made batting
on a bowler friendly track look easy.
Chris Heaps, 34 not out, and Max
Fisher, 14 not out, saw the team home
very comfortably in 13 overs to give
Stow the full 20 points and move the
team up to 4th in the league.
Sunday 10th June vs Chipping Norton –
WON
After years of playing Chipping Norton at
their ground, Stow were finally able to
welcome the team to Stow for the annual
friendly. Stow lost the toss and were asked
to bat but this looked to be the wrong
decision early on. Both of Stow’s openers got
off to a flyer and at one point were scoring
at 8 an over. Seb Bevan hit a rapid 43 but his
opening parter Louis Millar destroyed the
Chippy bowlers in his brutal knock of 89.
Stow were in a comfortable position but
Chippy pulled themselves back into it with
some good bowling and Stow were 7 wickets
down. Ashley Andrews and Dan Smith both
hit 50’s late on to put Stow back on track and
helped the team end with a huge score of
300-7.
Jack Robson opened the bowling and set the
tone, taking a very early wicket and ending
with 2-16 off his 7 overs. But Stow didn’t
take too many more wickets and Chippy’s
middle order looked comfortable, especially
their number 3 who went on to hit a good
84. Chris Heaps picked up some late wickets
and ended with 2-18 but this wasn’t enough
for Stow to bowl them out, and Chippy
ended on 167-7 off their 40 overs.
A comfortable victory for Stow, and an
enjoyable friendly once again.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR CHIPPY
We welcome a new hand at the helm of the Rotary Club for the next 12 months.
Edwin Wilson is relatively new to Rotary, having only been a member for about 4
years. Edwin is a retired headmaster, an accomplished organist and has done a
lot of work for the Chipping Norton Music Festival, in particular supporting his
wife Rosemary who is one of the main organisers. It's over to you on July 1st
Edwin, and have a fun and successful year.
STROKE AWARENESS DAY A SUCCESS
Some of you may have had a chance to have your blood pressure taken in the
Town Hall towards the end of May as part of the Stroke Awareness Day. We
hope you thought it better than previous events and gave you more information.
Firstly it was in the warm Town Hall, and not the windy Acrade as previously, and
secondly there was a chance to talk to some of the health workers from the
town including staff from the Community Hospital and members of the Lawrence
Home Nursing Team as well as the trainee doctors who were giving the free
blood pressures and giving general advice. We aim to build on this next year and
make the event a way to meet those looking after our health in the community.
NEW MEMBER
Welcome to a new member to the Rotary Club of Chipping Norton. Andy
Gregory was in the Navy and rose to a senior rank before leaving to join the
MOD. Now settled into retirement in Chippy, Andy had found Rotary an ideal
Well, it may have rained a bit at the Chippy Festival but we did have nice cars on
display again for those who enjoyed getting soaked. Dave Gordon from Bannor
Electrics weaved his magic again and persuaded the owners of some very
interesting cars to bring them along. We unfortunately did not get the very best
ones which are allergic to rain! However, there were enough to make a really
great show. Now who did that rain dance?
‘Treading on Eggshells’
shoes win top prize at ArtsKool 2012
A young artist from Lechlade has won the top prize at Art’s Kool with his amazing piece of Artwork entitled
‘Treading on Eggshells’. The pair of shoes he entered into the ‘Create a Pair of Shoes Fit for Royalty’
competition class took him weeks of hard work at home. Even his art teacher hadn’t seen the piece of work
he submitted. Taking part of a quote from HRH Prince Charles, Harry Barker (13) created an amazing
sculpture of a pair of high heeled shoes covered completely in fragments of egg shells fading in colour from
front to back. On the presentation marble plinth Harry had written ‘Treading on eggshells’.
The shoes were awarded The Nancy McCulloch Memorial Award, a handmade glass trophy created by artist
Helen Slater, and £100 in cash. Harry was delighted with his win which makes him the second winner from
Kingham Hill School to win Art’s Kool’s main competition.
Art’s Kool, the youth Art’s Festival for the Oxfordshire Cotswolds was founded by professional artist and
business woman, Jan Harvey (50). This year’s festival attracted over 90 entries in the eight competitions and
These lists are as good as the information we
have available. If your club or society or
association isn't listed it may because we don't
know about it – yet! If the information isn't up to
date, then please let us know. We will do our best
to keep the lists up to date – and we will
appreciate your involvement. (Our contact details
thirty young people attended workshops ranging from sculpture to life drawing. All the work produced for and at the festival was displayed in an
instant exhibition, which comprised 140 pieces of artwork.
Says Jan Harvey: ‘Art’s Kool is a Community Association and is therefore a not for profit organisation. With the exception of our professional tutors
no-one gets paid for their hard work but, on the day, people appear from everywhere to help set up, mount pictures, man the various stands and
welcome visitors. I am indebted to them for their help. Whilst it might be me that drives the Art’s Kool train to the station it is the volunteers who
unload the carriages and make the event happen.’
Art’s Kool is sponsored by The Rooflight Company who are based in Shipton-under-Wychwood where the festival takes place. Other local
