62 The Cotswold Tourism Awards are designed to highlight the successes and achievements of Cotswold tourism businesses through the last year in a range of categories, Including B&B of the Year and attraction of the year. Batsford Arboretum, Moreton, and The Gordon Russell Museum, Broadway, both won silver awards in the attraction of the year category while the Cotswold Farm Park won gold and silver in the campsite of the year. Winchcombe Caravan and Camping won gold in Caravan or Camping site of the Year while Broadway Manor Cottages won gold in Self-catering of the Year. The Cotswold Conference Centre near Broadway won gold in the conference centre of the year category and the Manor House Hotel in Moreton won silver in Hotel of the Year. The Chipping Norton branch of the U3A meets at the Methodist Hall in West Street on the first Wednesday of the month at 2pm. Membership is open to all retired/semi -retired people who still wish to keep their minds and bodies active while at the same time enjoying the company of like- minded individuals. The monthly meetings always feature a guest speaker and this year we have many interesting people visiting us. The programme going into the summer is as follows: April 4 Mrs K Wiseman, head of education at Blenheim Palace will talk about Sir Winston Churchill's relationship with the people of Blenheim and his time at the Palace. May 2 Mrs Moira Byast, a historian who has researched 17th century wills and diaries, will reveal how people in the past viewed the major events of the time. June 6 A welcome return for Dr Richard Long with one of his thought provoking talks. This time Afghanistan after Bin Ladan July 4 Chester House Productions return, this time with 'The Canberra Tales' a adaptation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales for the 21st Century, as told on the cruise liner Canberra. Membership of the U3A does not stop there. Throughout the month Special Interest Groups meet and there is something available to suit everyone. For the energetic there are walking, bowls, yoga and table tennis groups. There are Jazz and Blues and classical music, Play Reading and Reading groups. Gardening, Travel, French, Bridge, Science plus, Personal Finance and Living History add to the list. We also arrange excursions - last year we went to The Lord Leycester Hospital and Kenilworth Castle for a day of History and Gardens, and also visited the Morgan factory in Malvern and Elgar's birthplace. We were very pleased to welcome Barbara Shaw, the CEO of the West Oxfordshire CAB, to receive two cheques on behalf of everyone in Chipping Norton who took part in the Trolley Challenges, which raised £400. The CAB is a totally independent charity although it has in the past received significant funding from District and County Councils. With the current austerity measures all charitable donations are gratefully received in order to maintain the service.. Mike Howes, a senior member of the Rotary Club and a wellknown figure around Chippy, presented the cheques. Another Cracking Race Night. Our Annual Race Night was fundraising Medical Detection Dogs and Home Start. Our visitors and members dug deep, and raised about £2750. We were lucky to be visited by Edward, a Medical Detection Dog with Heather Shute who represented the charity, and he encouraged everyone to play up and support the charity. We expect to divide the amount between the two featured charities and Rotary charities including the Rotary Foundation. Music For A Spring Evening - Sat 12th May. A fantastic live classic music concert starring our very own guitar maestro Craig Ogden with Jean Mouillère, an internationally famous violinist, supported by accompanist Michele Innocenti. The concert will start at 7:30pm in St Mary's Church and all are welcome. Profits will support the Romanian Challenge Appeal and End Polio Now (part of the organisation which has cleared India of Polio). Tickets are available for cash from Jaffe & Neale or by credit card through the Chipping Norton Theatre on 01608 642350 or via the Theatre web site. Tickets cost £15, no concessions. A New Rotarian. We welcome Nick Richardson into the Club as a new member. Nick lives in Chipping Norton and is a retired Engineer. Youth Jazz Band Challenge. “What a fantastic evening!”. The winners were the very deserving Reading School Big Band - although it was a close run thing.
