VICTORIAN COSTUME COMPETITION The Victorian Costume Competition, which is sponsored by Alyth & District Business Association, was one of the many events that took place on Saturday the 30 th of November 2002. To all the people who participated, thank you. The immense variety of costumes of every hue and colour, which included such attire as claw-hammer jackets, top-hats, bowlers, mutch/hats, straw hats, Victorian bonnets, cravats, aprons, long skirts, ladies in wigs, etc gave people especially the youth of today a glimpse of how their great grandfathers and great grandmothers possibly dressed over one hundred years ago. Photographs were taken in abundance of so many “artists” in their period dresses they must have thought that it was Hollywood and not Alyth. Mrs. Elma Mitchell Alyth’s Citizen of the Year and Miss Victoria Harden Alyth’s Young Citizen of the Year had the impossible task of judging all the participants’ dress. The judges comments were” All participants were excellent. It was a tough decision” But as they say the impossible is done immediately miracles take a little longer they decreed that the winners were as follows:- 1st The Staff, Nordic Café, 2 Mill Street, Alyth. 2nd The Staff, The Singing Kettle, 14 Airlie Street, Alyth. 3 rd The Staff, The Alyth Hotel, 6 Commercial Street, Alyth, Useful Telephone Numbers Blairgowrie Police Station - 01250 872222 Hydro-Electric Emergencies - 0800 300999 Scottish Gas Emergencies - 0800 111999 North of Scotland Water Authority - 0845 437 437 Alyth Post Office - 01828 632301 Alyth Health Centre - 01828 632317 Alyth Primary School - 01828 632462 Blairgowrie High School - 01250 873445 Alyth Environmental Group - 01828 632907 If you offer a Emergency or breakdown Service e.g. Plumber, Electrician, Locksmith, Glazier, Central Heating or any other trade, Please send us your name and number for our useful numbers section. The displays were in so many various forms, from snow scenes with Santa’s train chugging along, Santa’s doing various things, (such as pulling sledges, climbing up chimneys etc) Snowmen, Angels, Christmas Puppy displays, Christmas trees of so many kinds, heights and colours and so many other fantastic displays impossible to describe here. It is hoped that many photographs were taken of all the windows. The judges, Mrs. Elma Mitchell, Alyth’s Citizen of the Year and Miss Victoria Harden, Alyth’s Young Citizen of the Year had the seemingly impossible task of deciding the winners. They stated, it was one of the hardest and most difficult jobs they had ever undertaken. But after much looking, discussion and soul searching they decreed that the winners were:- 1 st Camno Workshop, 19 Commercial Street, Alyth. The Christmas Window Competition Shield 2 nd Mr.Colin Nicoll, Butcher, 31 Airlie Street, Alyth, 3 rd Thrums Veterinary Group, 65 Airlie Street, Alyth. All the above received framed certificates. Thanks must be expressed to all businesses for their fantastic windows, which must have been the best in Perthshire if not Scotland, and brought such festive cheer to Alyth and to all. Thanks must also be expressed to Elma and Victoria for their time and effort spent on judging this event. Thanks must all be included to the Alyth Christmas Lights Committee and all their helpers for the fantastic Christmas light display in Alyth. Well done to all who were involved. Dear Sir We would be grateful if you could add a note from the staff at Alyth Health Centre to thank all the kind people who thought about us at Christmas whether through their good wishes, cards or presents they were very much appreciated by us all. Secondly we saw that the number included for the Health Centre in the last edition was in fact incorrect. The number for the Health Centre 24 hours per day is in fact 01828 632317 This is the only number that will be answered when the Health Centre is closed. Could this also be included:- With effect from 06.01.03 if you call the practice between the hours of 6.30 pm and 8 am patients will be put through to the Strathmore Out of Hours service. We would ask that patients be aware that if they call between these times the contact doctor may not necessarily be their own. With thanks for your help with this matter. Beth Turnbull Practice Administrator 14 Morrison Terrace Alyth PH11 8BY Dear Editor, Please find a letter of thanks to the persons responsible for the preparation and lighting of the Alyth Beacon on New Year’s Day. I was one of the party of 22 people who arrived on the hill at approx 3 pm on New Years afternoon, it was cold, windy with heavy rain falling as we set about lighting the beacon. Firstly a small bonfire was lit to keep us warm while efforts were made to brighten up the early evening skyline. Unfortunately with driving heavy rain falling, the task of setting alight the beacon proved more difficult than normal but perseverance saved the day and the beacon lit at exactly 3.30 pm. The hardy souls gathered round the bonfire enjoyed the moment and glasses were raised and consumed (once or twice). I also had the pleasure of meeting Neil and Ann, newly moved to Alyth (Meethill Road) and hope they enjoy life amongst us, and offer to them a very friendly welcome to Alyth. They very kindly invited us all to their home for a drink and the offer was very kindly accepted. Thereafter we were invited to Callum and Bette Strachan’s new home and were met with a drink, soup, Steak Pie and excellent hospitality. From leaving the square at 2 pm. I finally arrived home in the late hours of New Years Day, well watered, well fed and well satisfied with my day out. So as I said at the beginning of my letter, many thanks to all concerned with making New Years Day (and night) a memorable occasion for both my wife and myself. It was fantastic. Only one thing puzzles me and it was a question asked on the hill- WHERE IN THE WORLD ON NEW YEARS DAY WOULD YOU FIND PEOPLE ON A HILL,COLD, TIRED, AND WET,LAUGHING AND JOKING,SHARING A DRINK AND STORIES???? ALYTH (NO LESS) THANK YOU ALL!!! Kevin Smith Letters to the editor We look forward to receiving your letters and comments. This is your paper, your voice should be heard….. 3 Dear Editor Gliding Cadets Leadenhall Chapel Street Alyth 8th January 2003 Well done the Alyth Christmas Lights Committee and their team of volunteers. What a fantastic display –I’m sure we had one of the best in Perthshire. I understand that the Committee are setting up a 200 club. I hope the good citizens of Alyth & District will support this venture, which will raise the necessary funds to make it all possible again next year. Thanks again to the Committee-you fair brightened up my Christmas! Lynn Muir A proud Alyth citizen On the 12th of January three cadets from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, Cadet Sean Donaldson, (Blairgowrie), Cadet Clair Johnstone , (Blairgowrie) and Cadet Christopher Gordon (Alyth) accompanied by Flying Officer M. Kay (Alyth) journeyed to R.M.Condor for gliding. When they arrived at R.M.Condor they met up with another four cadets and one member of staff from 859 (Dalgety Bay) Squadron who had also been allocated gliding launches. After a briefing on the expected weather conditions, circuits to be used, possibility of Royal Flights, air safety, etc, a video on the parachute was shown followed by a video on Viking glider and its controls. At this point they all journeyed out to the airfield and were shown how to attach the launching strop, how to hold the wing tips and what to do at launch time when the glider is winched up into the air. Then one at a time each cadet was kitted up with a parachute then into the glider and away they went. Two cadets Sean Donaldson and Clair Johnstone from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron undertook a G.I.C.1 (gliding induction course 1) which consists of one familiarisation flight, one flightcovering pitch-using elevators and their last flight-covering roll using ailerons. All four Cadets from 859 (Dalgety Bay) Squadron also undertook a G.I.C.1. Cadet Christopher Gordon from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron undertook a G.I.C.2.which is as a G.I.C. 1 but with an extra flightcovering yaw using the rudder but unfortunately due to failing weather conditions his flight was curtailed before his G.I.C.2. was all completed. He will finish it on his next visit. All the cadets cannot wait for their next gliding experience. If the above interests you and you are between the ages of 13 years old to 18 years old come along any Monday or Wednesday evening between 7.00.p.m. and 9.00.pm. to 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, T.A.V.R.A.Building, Union Street, Blairgowrie and speak to the Commanding Officer, Adjutant or any of the Cadets.
