NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
CONSTABLE GRAHAM JACK SPEAKS TO
LOCAL PEOPLE
A useful Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators meeting
was held on 2nd December at Bank House, Airlie Street.
Constable Graham Jack, our local Community Safety Officer,
explained that there are now four policemen assigned to
Alyth, and that because of improved office back-up and the
efficient use of computers, they are able to spend more time
“on the beat” and, just as importantly keep in touch with
local people and organisations, such as the Youth Partnership,
the School and the Business Association. Legal constraints
make local law enforcement difficult, especially
since the police have a job of catching suspects, reporting to
the Procurator Fiscal and giving evidence in court to the
best of their ability. Their work ends there, and it is only by
co-operative work between the Police and the general public
that the area can be made and kept safe.
Although their work is not always obvious, the Police are
also initiating programmes to improve playgrounds, and get
the “Safer Roads to School campaign” going (and maintaining
such schemes once they’re running)
Constable Jack emphasised that he wanted to spend the remainder
of his Police career in this area because he considered
it was vital to have continuity of personal contact and
knowledge here. He wants to continue to hold meetings
with local groups, and welcomes contact from those who
want to contribute to local safety and a feeling of confidence
in the community.
Happy New Year
1
There is an emptiness in Alyth these days– We miss the
lone lithe figure of Jimmy Gibb– cutting grass, tidying up
neglected corners, sweeping and striding out along the
verges to Blairgowrie or Meigle; caring for the environment
by getting rid of much litter en route.
Many are sad at the passing of this worthwhile, private gentleman.
Well done to Alyth’s Community Council for dedicating that
Plaque and Seat to his memory.
Jimmy would have liked and appreciated that.
Adam Neve
For some years we have wondered what had become of that
weel kent and kenspeckle figure about Alyth, Adam Neve.
For a time no number of 'The Voice' was complete without
a pithy and acerbic contribution from his pungent pen, so it
was with great pleasure that we read the letter from Ailsa
MacForty of the St.Barnabas Home, Halbeath. We had
feared that Adam had passed into the Great Beyond, but no!
He is still with us, a true tradition bearer, though far away in
Halbeath.
Let us hear more from Mrs MacForty about her worthy
guest!
VICTORIAN COSTUME
COMPETITION
The Victorian Costume Competition, which is sponsored by
Alyth & District Business Association, was one of the many
events that took place on Saturday the 30 th of November 2002.
To all the people who participated, thank you.
The immense variety of costumes of every hue and colour,
which included such attire as claw-hammer jackets, top-hats,
bowlers, mutch/hats, straw hats, Victorian bonnets, cravats,
aprons, long skirts, ladies in wigs, etc gave people especially
the youth of today a glimpse of how their great grandfathers
and great grandmothers possibly dressed over one hundred
years ago.
Photographs were taken in abundance of so many “artists” in
their period dresses they must have thought that it was Hollywood
and not Alyth.
Mrs. Elma Mitchell Alyth’s Citizen of the Year and Miss Victoria
Harden Alyth’s Young Citizen of the Year had the impossible
task of judging all the participants’ dress. The judges comments
were” All participants were excellent. It was a tough decision”
But as they say the impossible is done immediately
miracles take a little longer they decreed that the winners were
as follows:-
1st The Staff, Nordic Café, 2 Mill Street, Alyth.
2nd The Staff, The Singing Kettle, 14 Airlie Street, Alyth.
3 rd The Staff, The Alyth Hotel, 6 Commercial Street,
CHRISTMAS WINDOW COMPETITION
The Christmas Window Competition, which is sponsored
by Alyth & District Business Association, was a fantastic
display for Christmas 2002 with windows in, it would
seem, every business in Alyth.
The displays were in so many various forms, from snow
scenes with Santa’s train chugging along, Santa’s doing
various things, (such as pulling sledges, climbing up
chimneys etc) Snowmen, Angels, Christmas Puppy displays,
Christmas trees of so many kinds, heights and colours
and so many other fantastic displays impossible to
describe here. It is hoped that many photographs were
taken of all the windows.
The judges, Mrs. Elma Mitchell, Alyth’s Citizen of the
Year and Miss Victoria Harden, Alyth’s Young Citizen of
the Year had the seemingly impossible task of deciding
the winners. They stated, it was one of the hardest and
most difficult jobs they had ever undertaken.
But after much looking, discussion and soul searching
they decreed that the winners were:-
1 st Camno Workshop, 19 Commercial Street, Alyth.
The Christmas Window Competition Shield
2 nd Mr.Colin Nicoll, Butcher, 31 Airlie Street, Alyth,
3 rd Thrums Veterinary Group, 65 Airlie Street,
Alyth.
All the above received framed certificates.
Thanks must be expressed to all businesses for their fantastic
windows, which must have been the best in
Perthshire if not Scotland, and brought such festive cheer
to Alyth and to all.
Thanks must also be expressed to Elma and Victoria for
their time and effort spent on judging this event.
Thanks must all be included to the Alyth Christmas Lights
Committee and all their helpers for the fantastic Christmas
light display in Alyth. Well done to all who were involved.
Dear Sir
We would be grateful if you could add a note from the staff at
Alyth Health Centre to thank all the kind people who thought
about us at Christmas whether through their good wishes, cards or
presents they were very much appreciated by us all.
Secondly we saw that the number included for the Health Centre
in the last edition was in fact incorrect. The number for the Health
Centre 24 hours per day is in fact 01828 632317
This is the only number that will be answered when the Health
Centre is closed. Could this also be included:-
With effect from 06.01.03 if you call the practice between the
hours of 6.30 pm and 8 am patients will be put through to the
Strathmore Out of Hours service.
We would ask that patients be aware that if they call between
these times the contact doctor may not necessarily be their own.
With thanks for your help with this matter.
Dear Editor,
Please find a letter of thanks to the persons responsible for the
preparation and lighting of the Alyth Beacon on New Year’s Day.
I was one of the party of 22 people who arrived on the hill at
approx 3 pm on New Years afternoon, it was cold, windy with
heavy rain falling as we set about lighting the beacon. Firstly a
small bonfire was lit to keep us warm while efforts were made to
brighten up the early evening skyline. Unfortunately with driving
heavy rain falling, the task of setting alight the beacon proved
more difficult than normal but perseverance saved the day and the
beacon lit at exactly 3.30 pm.
The hardy souls gathered round the bonfire enjoyed the moment
and glasses were raised and consumed (once or twice). I also had
the pleasure of meeting Neil and Ann, newly moved to Alyth
(Meethill Road) and hope they enjoy life amongst us, and offer to
them a very friendly welcome to Alyth. They very kindly invited
us all to their home for a drink and the offer was very kindly accepted.
Thereafter we were invited to Callum and Bette
Strachan’s new home and were met with a drink, soup, Steak Pie
and excellent hospitality. From leaving the square at 2 pm. I finally
arrived home in the late hours of New Years Day, well watered,
well fed and well satisfied with my day out.
So as I said at the beginning of my letter, many thanks to all concerned
with making New Years Day (and night) a memorable
occasion for both my wife and myself. It was fantastic. Only one
thing puzzles me and it was a question asked on the hill-
WHERE IN THE WORLD ON NEW YEARS DAY WOULD
YOU FIND PEOPLE ON A HILL,COLD, TIRED, AND
WET,LAUGHING AND JOKING,SHARING A DRINK AND
STORIES???? ALYTH (NO LESS) THANK YOU ALL!!!
8th January 2003
Well done the Alyth Christmas Lights Committee and their team
of volunteers. What a fantastic display –I’m sure we had one of
the best in Perthshire.
I understand that the Committee are setting up a 200 club. I hope
the good citizens of Alyth & District will support this venture,
which will raise the necessary funds to make it all possible again
next year.
Thanks again to the Committee-you fair brightened up my Christmas!
Lynn Muir
A proud Alyth citizen
On the 12th of January three cadets from
2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, Cadet Sean
Donaldson, (Blairgowrie), Cadet Clair
Johnstone , (Blairgowrie) and Cadet Christopher Gordon (Alyth)
accompanied by Flying Officer M. Kay (Alyth) journeyed to
R.M.Condor for gliding.
When they arrived at R.M.Condor they met up with another four
cadets and one member of staff from 859 (Dalgety Bay) Squadron
who had also been allocated gliding launches. After a briefing on
the expected weather conditions, circuits to be used, possibility of
Royal Flights, air safety, etc, a video on the parachute was shown
followed by a video on Viking glider and its controls.
At this point they all journeyed out to the airfield and were shown
how to attach the launching strop, how to hold the wing tips and
what to do at launch time when the glider is winched up into the
air.
Then one at a time each cadet was kitted up with a parachute then
into the glider and away they went.
Two cadets Sean Donaldson and Clair Johnstone from 2519
(Strathmore) Squadron undertook a G.I.C.1 (gliding induction
course 1) which consists of one familiarisation flight, one flightcovering
pitch-using elevators and their last flight-covering roll
using ailerons.
All four Cadets from 859 (Dalgety Bay) Squadron also undertook
a G.I.C.1.
Cadet Christopher Gordon from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron undertook
a G.I.C.2.which is as a G.I.C. 1 but with an extra flightcovering
yaw using the rudder but unfortunately due to failing
weather conditions his flight was curtailed before his G.I.C.2. was
all completed. He will finish it on his next visit. All the cadets
cannot wait for their next gliding experience.
If the above interests you and you are between the ages of 13
years old to 18 years old come along any Monday or Wednesday
evening between 7.00.p.m. and 9.00.pm. to 2519 (Strathmore)
Squadron, T.A.V.R.A.Building, Union Street, Blairgowrie and
speak to the Commanding Officer, Adjutant or any of the Cadets.

Flying Cadets
On the 1st of December four cadets
from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron,
Cadet Mark Harper (Blairgowrie),
and Cadet Ian Duff, Cadet Rachel
Anderson and Cadet Haley Sinclair
accompanied by Civilian Instructor
Paul Prettyman (who are all from Alyth) journeyed to Royal
Air Force Leuchars for Air Experience Flying at 12 A.E.F.
(12 Air Experience Flight). There they joined up with 13 cadets
and three staff from various other squadrons from the
Dundee & Central Scotland Wing.
Squadron Leader V.Butler gave a presentation of the expected
weather over the next 6 hours and whether there were any
Royal Flights were expected to enter Royal Air Force
Leuchars airspace.
Then all cadets watched a health and safety video on the parachute
and life jacket (there fitting and use), the Grob Tutor,
the aircraft controls and how to enter it by walking on the
correct parts of the wings as directed by the ground crew, etc.
Each cadet undertook a flight in a Grob Tutor which lasted
about 35 minutes, during which time they each piloted the
aircraft themselves and afterwards the pilot did aerobatics
such as barrel rolls, stall turns, looping the loop etc. if the
cadet wanted to.
All the cadets from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron thoroughly
enjoyed their flights and they cannot wait for their next return
visit.
years old to 18 years old come along any Wednesday evening
HAPPY NEW YEAR
St. Valentines Day Window Competition.
Alyth & District Business Association,
is once more sponsoring the St.
Valentines Day Window Dressing
Competition. It is hoped that all businesses
in the town will enter.
The displays over the previous five
years have been a wonder for all to
view and I am sure this year will also
be the same.
“St. Valentine is the patron saint of love” and the way that the
window displays in past years have expressed this has been staggering,
with teddy bears holding hands, lovers on swings, lovers
in cars. Couples holding hands, hearts, roses, Cupid with his
bow and arrow, etc.
What will appear this year ? We will all just have to wait and
see!
Alyth’s Citizen of the Year Mrs. E. Mitchell and Alyth’s Young
Citizen of the Year Miss Victoria Harden have been asked to
judge the competition on Friday 14 th February.
The St.Valentine’s Window Competition Shield will be presented
to the winner along with framed certificates for 1 st , 2 nd
and 3 rd places.
Ten Years On
Ten years ago I stepped off the train at Perth Station carrying a
large rucksack of unlikely-looking wooden blocks. At 9am this
morning, a steady stream of children filed in through the door to
eagerly engage with these same blocks as a means of unconsciously
exploring the relationships between weight, mass, volume
and scale: to the young mind, these are the building blocks
of life.
Alyth's very own Montessori Nursery School has now been
running for ten years. Paul and Louise Ramsay had offered their
garden room at Bamff for the first incarnation, and Alyth, lacking
a nursery of its own, supplied a full complement of children.
Once the Alyth nursery opened, numbers dwindled for a while,
and then, after I and the school took up residence in the Coach
House at Netherton, numbers rose again, boosted by the new
partnership scheme with the local education authority. Now the
school roll is always full and there is a waiting list.
The odd-looking blocks form the cornerstones of the so-called
Montessori Method. We have had fun persuading the education
authorities and parents alike that Montessori is both the same
as, and yet quite different from, any ordinary nursery school.
What makes it the same is that fact that it supplies all the ingredients
to make for happy preschool children to come together to
play and learn for a few hours a day: lots to do, neatly laid out,
sand, water, construction, books, role-play, tearing around the
garden, romping and chattering. And so forth. What makes it
different is that Montessori understood, down to the minutest
detail, just how young children actually learnt. Her training as a
scientist, mathematician and psychiatric worker with special
needs children enabled her to provide the exact tools of learning
that young children craved. They have a passion for problem
solving. They like achieving. And they like the satisfaction of a
job well done. So the activities in which they engage are designed
to have a specific purpose and outcome. Far from being
limiting and restrictive, children find this immensely liberating.
They know what they are setting out to do, and they feel deeply
pleased with themselves when they have achieved it. This is the
secret ingredient of the Montessori Method. What is more, because
children are so discriminating in their work, they develop
finely tuned powers of imagination, so that creativity flows with
a harnessed and controlled ease.
The result? A thriving nursery school, always full of busy, purposive,
contented children, whose levels of concentration astound
parents and teachers alike; and whose confidence and
degree of independence makes them fully equipped to go on to
their primary schools with both a love of learning and the
knowledge of how to set about it.
The first group of children who started at the Bamff Montessori
Nursery School in September 1992 are now well into secondary
school. Perhaps it is time for a Teenage Tin Jubilee Reunion
next Summer in the Gardens of Netherton!
Alyth Youth Partnership
Made a New Year’s resolution? Giving up something? You don’t
need to. Why not give yourself a chance to do fun activities and get
some satisfaction from sharing your time and talent with some of
our young people who themselves are just trying to have a good
time and make a contribution to our town.
There is a new Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Group meeting on
Wednesday evenings. They need some adult help and you don’t
have to climb mountains (unless you want to!)
The Alyth Youth Partnership gets a full-time worker in January but
the few volunteers really need some help on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday nights and for the occasional trip at weekends.
The Alyth Skate Solution is a group of young people working to get
a skate park to enjoy their favourite activity and at the same time,
make the streets safer for everyone else. They could also do with
some help with fundraising and just a bit of adult interest.
The Youth Theatre, Scouts, Guides, Sunday School and others are
also run by a few dedicated people who give a lot but who also get
a lot out of helping. Find out what you’re missing and get on board
and maybe 2003 could be a better year for you and the young folk.
