Men’s Preseason Notes 

Mays returns for another chance at NCAA Indoor 

Championships 

Senior weight thrower Kevin Mays is back for one more 

season after finishing last season as the individual Mid- 

American Conference Champion in the weight throw and 

qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Mays, who 

was the only individual MAC Champion on the men’s indoor 

team last season, won the weight throw at the MAC meet 

with a career-best toss of 67-06.25. Mays also finished seventh 

in the hammer throw in the MAC Outdoor Championships. 

Adams looks to build upon momentum from cross 

country 

Sophomore Tecumseh Adams enters the 2012 track and 

field season on a roll after winning the individual MAC 

Championship in cross country and finishing 69th at the 

NCAA National Cross Country Championships. This season 

he will attempt to both defend his 1500m title and improve 

upon his runner-up finish in the 5000m in outdoor track. 

He will also compete in long distance events during indoor 

track, where he finished fifth in the mile at the MAC Indoor 

Championships. 

Ashcraft back in the indoor lineup after redshirt season 

Senior David Ashcraft will provide veteran leadership and 

be a contender in the 400m dash, an event in which he has 

historically done very well. He finished runner-up and fifth 

in the event at the MAC Indoor Championships in 2009 and 

2010, respectively. He also finished runner-up at the 2009 

MAC Outdoor Championships in the 400m dash. 

Performance of the youth will be key 

Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Willie Randolph’s 

men’s and women’s teams are very young and will be relying 

on strong performances from its many underclassmen for 

a successful season. More than 60 percent of both teams’ 

rosters are made up of freshmen, redshirt freshmen and 

sophomores. Such underclassmen as sophomores Ross 

Parsons (sprints), Ryan Brooks (sprints) Parker Scott (hurdles), 

Clay Holman (long sprints), Adam Lohner (pole vault), 

Cory Noeker (sprints/hurdles) Kyle Smith (Javelin) and Tim 

Reynolds (multi-event) will be expected to continue to 

improve from their strong starts to their collegiate careers. 

First-year indoor track competitors Lucas Bade (middle 

distance), Kyle Stacks (long distance), Curtis Mitchell (sprints), 

Ryan Miller (jumps), Nathaniel Hop (pole vault) and Diavonte 

Smith (sprints/jumps), in addition to the other young 

runners, will also need to step in and make an impact for the 

Chippewas this season. 

Championship experience abounds for the Chippewas 

Though young, the Chippewas return a number of studentathletes 

who scored at either the MAC Indoor or Outdoor 

Championships. Of the 18 athletes who scored at the Indoor 

Championships, 13 will be returning for the 2012 indoor 

season. Of the 20 who scored at the Outdoor Championships, 

16 will be returning. The Chippewas finished fifth of five at 

the Indoor Championships and third of six at the Outdoor 

Championships, both of which are marks the team looks to 

improve upon this season. 

Kettlewell sets the bar high for pole vault 

Senior Josh Kettlewell has already set the bar high for himself 

this season in the pole vault after a career-best vault of 16- 

08.75 in the season-opening GVSU Laker Early Bird. According 

to the Track and Field Results Reporting System, Kettlewell’s 

vault is tied for the nation’s eighth best in the young season. 

Wilson joins the coaching staff as a jumps, pole vault and 

multi-events coach 

Bobby Wilson takes over as the coach for jumps, pole vault 

and multi-events this season, a position he formerly held as 

an assistant coach for Bucknell University from 2008-2010. 

He also served as the head coach for the track and field and 

cross country programs at the State University of New York at 

Oswego during the 2010-2011 season.

Women’s Preseason Notes 

Chippewas replacing key graduated student-athletes 

The women’s team will need a number of student-athletes 

to fill the vacancies created by the graduation of key 

contributors to last season’s team. Gone this year for the 

Chippewas are sprinter Jordan Dunn, who set the school 

record in the 60m dash and finished third at the MAC 

Indoor Championships, and Shanaye Carr, who won backto-back 

60m hurdle individual indoor MAC Championships 

and finished third in the 100m hurdles at the Outdoor 

Championships. Top throwers Mykal Imbrock and Whitney 

Johnson, and top distance runners Danielle Dakroub and 

Kylee Kubacki also graduated. 

Veterans pace the distance teams 

Seniors Holly Anderson, Christina Farrow and Veronica 

Garcia and juniors Maddie Ribant and Charnele Lyons, all 

of whom turned in strong performances at the MAC Indoor 

and Outdoor Championships last season, will be expected 

to lead the distance team in 2012. Anderson is the top 

returner for the 5000m after finishing ninth at the 2011 MAC 

Indoor Championships. Ribant finished seventh in the mile 

at the Indoor Championships, and Lyons qualified for the 

finals of the 1500m at the Outdoor Championships. Farrow 

finished seventh in the 800m run at the 2011 MAC Indoor 


Experience returns in the sprints and hurdles 

Seniors Kirlene Roberts, Dierra Riley, Raquel Gibbs and 

Stephanie Hurley (sprints) lead the stable of CMU sprinters 

for the 2012 season. Junior Tamica Harbour and senior Emily 

Dienhart are back to lead the CMU hurdlers. 

Chippewas young in the field events 

Seniors Kayla Brindley (throws) and Misha Lamphere (jumps) 

and junior Tamica Harbour (hurdles/jumps) are the only three 

upperclassmen Chippewas listed to compete in field events 

this season. 

Performance of the youth will be important 

Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Willie Randolph’s

Stein (jumps), Megan Heffner (hurdles/jumps), Kelsey Ritter 

(sprints), and Shawntoreah Turk (sprints) will look to improve 

upon their performances from last season. Newcomers 

Breanne Lesnar (distance), Ravyn Baxter (sprints), Bridget 

Doughty (hurdles), Emma Fishnick (hurdles), Kyla Walworth 

(throws), and Diamond Hamilton (sprints), among others, will 

look to contribute at a high level and continue to develop 

throughout the season. 

Chippewas with championship experience will be critical 

The Chippewas will depend upon a number of returning 

student-athletes who competed at the MAC Indoor or 

Outdoor Championships in 2011. Of the 15 student-athletes 

who scored at the MAC Indoor Championships, ten will be 

returning this season, while seven of the 12 who competed 

at the MAC Outdoor Championships will be returning. 

These student-athletes will be expected to improve upon 

their performances from last season and push the young 

athletes. The Chippewas finished seventh of 12 at the 2011 

MAC Indoor Championships, and 10th of 12 at the Outdoor

Head Coach Willie Randolph 

Now in his third year as the director 

of Central Michigan’s track and field 

and cross country program, Willie 

Randolph aims to continue moving 

the Chippewas back to prominence 

at the conference, regional and 

national level. 

Under Randolph’s tutelage, the 

Chippewas have produced 12 

individual MAC titles, 30 All-MAC 

performers, 13 NCAA outdoor 

preliminary qualifiers, five NCAA 

indoor provisional qualifiers, three NCAA Outdoor Championships 

qualifiers, two NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier and one All- 

American. Eight school records have been broken in Randolph’s 

first two years at the helm. In addition, Raeanne Lohner earned 

All-Region honors for cross country in 2010. 

Randolph’s second year as director of track and field/cross 

country started strong in the fall as the women’s cross country 

team finished second at the Mid-American Conference meet, an 

improvement of two places from the previous year. The men’s 

team took eighth. Four individuals earned All-MAC honors. The 

cross country season concluded at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional 

Championships as the women’s team took eighth of 33 teams and 

the men took 19th. 

Success followed Randolph into the winter and spring months 

as track and field began. Throughout the indoor and outdoor 

seasons, four school records were broken and three individuals 

earned All-MAC honors. Eleven underclassmen contributed to the 

third-place finish at the MAC Outdoor Championships by scoring 

points, a testament to Randolph’s recruiting. Four Chippewas 

qualified for regionals, including Alex Rose who also placed fifth in 

the discus at nationals, earning All-America honors. His effort also 

earned CMU a top-50 finish at nationals. 

In his first year at CMU, Randolph saw four Maroon and Gold teams 

finish fourth or higher in the Mid-American Conference meets. The 

Chippewas saw immediate results in the fall as the men’s cross 

country team finished third while the women took fourth at the 

MAC Championships. The women capped their campaign with an 

impressive ninth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional 

while the men finished 11th. 

The Maroon and Gold continued laying a championship 

foundation during the track and field seasons. The women’s squad 

finished runner-up at the 2010 MAC Indoor Championships, its 

highest placing since 2004, and took fourth at the MAC Outdoor 

Championships. Both meets saw a CMU athlete earn individual 

recognition from the conference as Erika Schroll was named the 

MAC Most Outstanding Field Performer during the indoor season 

and Raeanne Lohner earned the MAC Most Outstanding Track 

Performer award outdoors. 

After the conclusion of the 2010 NCAA season, CMU sent four 

student-athletes to the USA Track and Field Championships and 

saw Alex Rose qualify for the International Association of Athletics 

Federations World Junior Championships in the discus. In 2011, 

two current and one former Chippewas competed in the USA 

Junior and Senior Track and Field National Championships. 

Central’s success carried over to the classroom as well, with 18 

Academic All-MAC selections and one CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine 

Academic All-District pick. On a team level, the men’s and women’s 

cross country squads each earned the team academic award from 

the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. In 

2011, the women’s cross country team ranked 14th nationally with 

a grade-point average of 3.62. 

Randolph Returns to Alma Mater 

On May 7, 2009, Randolph was hired as Central’s first director of 

men’s and women’s track and field/cross country. 

“We are excited to bring Willie aboard to lead our men’s and 

women’s track and cross country programs in this new direction,” 

CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said. “As a Chippewa 

letterwinner, Willie brings a passion and enthusiasm for Central 

Michigan that will play a key role in maintaining the championship 

level of performance we have achieved over the past decade. I also 

feel his experience will be an important component in building a 

successful combined program.” 

Randolph comes to CMU from the University of Louisville. He 

worked directly with sprinters and hurdlers at Louisville and was 

part of a coaching staff that worked under the combined program 

model that is now employed at CMU. 

“I feel blessed and honored to be able to return to my alma mater,” 

Randolph said. “Although I know there are challenges that lie 

ahead, I am confident that my staff and I will take this program to 

the next level of excellence.” 



Head Coach Willie Randolph 

Wealth of Coaching Experience Brought Back to CMU 

Randolph was part of a coaching staff that enjoyed a significant 

amount of success at Louisville. Last season, the Cardinals’ women’s 

team won its second straight Big East Conference Outdoor 

Championships title, while the men finished in second place, just 

one-half point behind champion Notre Dame. It marked the second 

straight runner-up finish for the Louisville men outdoors. The 

coaching staff was named Big East Women’s Coaching Staff of the 

Year for the second consecutive season. 

Louisville’s men’s squad captured the Big East outdoor title in 2007, 

while the women’s team finished runner-up. The coaching staff was 

named Big East Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2007. 

Randolph coached 10 All-Big East performers, six NCAA provisional 

qualifiers and eight NCAA Mideast Regional qualifiers while at 

Louisville, and the sprinters and hurdlers set 15 school records under 

his tutelage. Some of his most noteworthy performers included Big 

East indoor and outdoor 200m champion Elisabeth Slettum, twotime 

Big East champion Heather Trimiew and 100m school-record 

holders Saravia Richardson and Edmond Yeboah. 

Off the track, Randolph worked closely with the school’s academic 

program and was instrumental in guiding the women’s track and 

field team to the all-academic team recognition it received from 

the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches 

Association in 2007, when the Cardinals’ 3.41 team grade-point 

average ranked 17th nationally. 

The USTFCCCA named eight Cardinals to its all-academic team in 

2009. In 2008, seven Louisville student-athletes were named to 

the all-academic team, and the Cardinals also swept the Big East 

Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence awards for men’s and women’s 

track and field. The awards are given to one student-athlete in each 

conference sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades 

or performances and volunteer service to the community. 

Prior to his stop in Louisville, Randolph oversaw a combined 

program as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach and 

head cross country coach at the University of New Orleans. In three 

seasons at UNO, Randolph coached 10 NCAA regional qualifiers, 30 

All-Sun Belt Conference performers, 10 Sun Belt Conference Track 

and Field champions, 15 Academic All-Sun Belt selections and an 

individual cross country Sun Belt champion. UNO broke 56 school 

records, including two Sun Belt Conference records, under his 

guidance. 

Randolph served as an assistant coach for the cross country and 

men’s and women’s track and field teams at Vanderbilt University 

for two years before his stop in New Orleans. He was also the 

recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt. Randolph worked directly with 

two-time All-America heptathlete Josie Hahn, and the hurdlers and 

middle distance runners he coached broke 12 school records in his 

two seasons. 

Randolph’s collegiate coaching career began at Belmont University 

in 1999. He spent four seasons with the Bruins and coached one 

NCAA national qualifier, one Junior National Championships 

qualifier and three Atlantic Sun Conference champions. Randolph 

also mentored 14 student-athletes who earned academic allconference 

honors. 

During his time at Belmont, Randolph also founded and coached the 

Nashville Elite Track Club. He was named USA Track and Field Club 

Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to a 2001 USA Track and 

Field Club national championship. Randolph helped coach Jeremy 

Taylor to a top-10 world ranking in the 200m in 2001, and another 

of his club athletes, Xavier James, advanced to the semifinals in the 

100m at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. 

Randolph is a USATF Level I and II certified coach in jumps, sprints 

and hurdles. He also is a USATF certified meet official. 

Randolph, a native of Saginaw, Mich. and graduate of Carrollton High 

School, earned a bachelor of applied arts degree in organizational 

and public communications from CMU in 1998. He was a two-year 

letterman in the Chippewas’ track and field program as a hurdler.
