Le Show de l’Ouest
Le Show de l'Ouest is a multidisciplinary project
associated to the Prairies art project. It offers a
variety of formats: performances, conferences,
meetings, walks, video projections, documentary
and fictional films, etc..
Inspired by the famous Buffalo Bill circus that
contributed to the legend of the Wild West at the
end of the 19th century, Le Show de l'Ouest is on
tour and specialises in one evening/afternoon
events.

After the conquest, this hero of the Wild West found himself suddenly unemployed, and decided to
form a show that would go on to tour America and travel to Europe, spreading the myth of the West.
The shows re-enacted historic but already legendary events and scenes from the Wild West, such
as the battles between the white man and Indians, and stagecoach robberies, as well as scenes
from the Indian's and pioneer's everyday lives. The circus made actual characters from history
play themselves: famous Indians such as Geronimo and Sitting Bull, as well as Calamity Jane
and various other characters from the Wild West. The show was based around re-enactments and
embodied an America that invented its own legend almost as events happened. Is this characteristic
of a "people without history" (Gertrude Stein)? This example of pragmatism also bears witness to an
entrepreneurial spirit that was in some aspects wild.
