VINCENT-VICTOR JOUFFE

After studying drawing at the Paris École Nationale Supérieure des Beauxarts,
Vincent-Victor Jouffe took up photography and filmmaking. After moving
to the village of Saint-Méloir-des-Bois in the north of Brittany, he began to
create a corpus of images related to the region. This is where he grew up and
his work was guided by his thoughts about the area. He is much influenced
by the teachings of art historian, critic and exhibition curator Jean-François
Chevrier, who invited him to his seminar "Des territoires (On localities)". Jouffe's
photography combines several parameters – artistic, theoretical, historical, social
and also biographical. His knowledge of Art History and the use of archives and
documentation have given him the analytic distance needed to work in his native
region on this personal and artistic experiment. His works are rooted in reality
and are a social chronicle as much as they are landscape photography with a
very present and discreetly autobiographical human dimension. In addition to
his magnificent set of polaroids of the flooded Prairies Saint-Martin (a large,
relatively uncultivated park by a canal in Rennes, which flooded in 2000), Jouffe
has created a new photo-film for the 2012 Ateliers de Rennes. It is a montage of
slides from his huge stock of photos of agricultural shows (comices in French).
COMICE is a compilation of images from different years but it tells the story of a
typical day at one of these now rare events.
