Musée des beaux-arts
de Rennes
Rennes fine art museum is, like the majority of French museums,
the result of the revolution. Established in 1794, it contains
some of the Président de Robien's collection of curiosities. Its
collections were expanded over three centuries with additions
from Government, donations, and bequests. Since the beginning
of the 20th century, State and City support made in feasible
to introduce an acquisition policy that today showcases the
collections of 17th century French painting, with Georges de la
Tour's Nouveau né remaining the flagship piece.
Since the first Ateliers de Rennes — biennale d’art
contemporain, the museum received a Nicolas Floch' piece
in 2008, and expanded its collection of historic pieces with
work from Pieter Engels, Robert Filliou, and Giuseppe Pinot
Gallizio, while 2010 saw a Yona Friedman piece added to the
museum patio. As for each session of Ateliers de Rennes, the
museum will be linked to the project launched by the exhibition
commissioner, with a view to forging a link between modern
creativity and work that is already part of the history of art,
Western or otherwise.
