awards 2011

Out and
about
The highlight of the last month was
undoubtedly the day I attended two
national award ceremonies in
London and was able to cheer on
our four award winners (see page 3
for a full run down of the awards).
Winning four awards in one day was
absolutely amazing and our medical
director, Nick Land, chief operating
officer, Les Morgan and I were all
extremely proud to be there to
represent TEWV.
We joined Angus Bell, senior clinical
director at the Royal College of
Psychiatrists’ awards in the afternoon
and were delighted to see him receive
the recognition he deserves. The icing
on the cake was the announcement
that we’d been named mental health
service provider of the year.
In the evening we met up with staff
from the KPO office (quality
improvement team) and our research
and development team at the Health
Service Journal awards ceremony and
they walked away with two more richly
deserved awards.
We received warm congratulations from
colleagues on the day including national
director for mental health, Hugh
Griffiths and Paul Garvin, chairman of
North Tees and Hartlepool NHS
Foundation Trust, who said we’d done
the North East proud.
This is a tremendous achievement for
the trust and a credit to all our staff
who work extremely hard to improve
the lives of the people who use our
services – these are your awards and
you should be very proud of them.
With Christmas drawing near I’m
planning to attend as many carol
services as I can across the trust and
hope to see some of you at these
popular annual events.
And, as another year comes to a close I
would like to echo Martin’s message
(page 8) and thank everyone including
staff, members, governors, service users
and carers for your ongoing support
and wish you all the best for 2012.
Jo Turnbull
Trust chairman
The chairman and non-executive
directors would welcome invitations to
events (no matter how small). If you
would like to invite them to your event
Caring for care homes
A pilot service to increase specialist
mental health support for older
people in South Tees care homes has
received confirmation that its funding
will continue after a successful yearlong
trial.
The South Tees care home liaison team has
been working with over 60 care homes in
Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland
to help their staff recognise different
mental health issues and learn new ways
to manage the symptoms.
In just a year there have been a number of
major successes and positive outcomes for
care home residents. Mental health
Bringing
words to life
Young people in a creative writing
group at the Mulberry Centre,
Darlington, have produced a poetry
book about their feelings.
“Cathedral City Cheese and other poems”
contains 26 of the young people’s poems
which are brought to life by colourful
illustrations with the help of children’s
illustrator and author Liz Million.
The Mulberry Centre provides child and
adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)
in Darlington. Its writing group aims to
increase young people’s social interaction,
confidence and self esteem. Ten children
have attended the group since it started in
2009.
“Cathedral City Cheese” is one of the
book’s poems and it was chosen as the title
of the book as the young people feel it
highlights the importance of children in care
having choices; whether it’s where they live
or their favourite cheese.
During the book’s launch at Darlington Arts
Centre, Liz read out some of the poems and
presented certificates to the young people.
She said: “It was a pleasure to work with
such lovely, creative children and
South Tees care home liaison team
admissions to hospital have more than
halved, 20% of care home residents
prescribed anti-psychotic medication for
challenging behaviour have had it reduced
or stopped and care home staff are
implementing more non-medical
approaches to managing challenging
behaviour in people with dementia.
Other trust care home liaison teams which
have been undertaking similar projects will
now share their skills, experience and
knowledge in a week-long quality
improvement event in December, to devise
a standard approach to providing this
service trustwide.
Steph Hunter and
Liz Million launch
the poetry book
at Darlington Arts
Centre
encouraging staff to
bring the poems to
life. The words are
written from the children’s hearts because
they wanted or needed to tell their stories”.
Steph Hunter, CAMHS coordinator said:
“We’re exceptionally proud of the young
authors and we’re extremely grateful to Liz
for volunteering her time. These young
people have encountered some challenges
and the launch of this book gives them a
well deserved sense of achievement”.
Our success is built upon strong clinical
leadership and this, along with our drive
for excellence and quality improvement,
was recognised by the judges of this
award. They remarked on our innovative
practice and said we had “demonstrated
improvement in quality over a wide range
This award recognised the trust’s quality
improvement system (TEWV QIS) which
is helping us improve services and drive
out waste.
The judges said they were “most
impressed by the board-to-ward
engagement”, adding “we loved the
linkages between improving the patient
experience and value for money.”
Research culture
The award recognises our contribution to
worldwide mental health research and to
further improving the quality of our
own services and care locally.
Judges commended the trust for
“impressive work in a challenging field
and across a wide geographical area.”
They added that the initiative was a
“clear demonstration of clinical and
management leadership and effective
infrastructure and support.”
Dual role
reaps
rewards
A member of our nursing staff has
taken the unusual step of becoming
an Approved Mental Health
Professional (AMHP).
Cayla Burnside is a community mental
health nurse for the West Sector
community mental health team based
at Leyburn Medical Practice.
Historically the AMHP role was held by
social workers, but the Mental Health
Act (MHA) 2007 opened it up to mental
health nurses, occupational therapists
and psychologists. The training is based
around different models of mental
distress, values and ethics, working in
partnership, risk and the law.
The six month, full time course is
assessed on academic assignments,
presentations and a portfolio from
placements. Once qualified the local
authority social services department
approves the AMHP to carry out MHA
duties on their behalf.
It’s unusual for someone working in a
nursing environment to undertake this
qualification and everyone else on
Cayla’s course were social workers.
Cayla says “The course has been
challenging but really worthwhile and is
helping me to be even more sensitive to
the social, as well as medical, needs of
the people we work with. It’s a huge
responsibility but one I hope to embrace
in seeking the best possible outcomes
for our most vulnerable people”.
As well as working for TEWV, Cayla also
works on behalf of North Yorkshire
County Council as part of an integrated
service.
New art gallery to
view online
A new art gallery now appears on the
patient experience section of the
trust’s website, giving our readers the
opportunity to view the colourful and
creative work of our service users
online.
The gallery currently displays a wide
range of paintings and drawings and we
hope this will grow to include a range of
mixed media such as photographs and
pottery too.
Art therapy can provide a very powerful
means of expression and can help in the
road to recovery. Having this new
website section means that the artistic
talents of our service users can be
shared and enjoyed by everyone.
To view the artistic talents online go to
www.tewv.nhs.uk/patientexperience
The communications team welcomes
both old and new pieces of artwork that
service users would like to exhibit on the
gallery. To find out how to do this get in
touch with the communications team at
A little help from my friends
A befriending service developed to
support people with mental ill
health has been making a difference
to the lives of service users across
Teesside.
‘Gud Bud’ volunteers have been visiting
Roseberry Park, Ridgeway, Phoenix
Lodge and Park House, engaging
patients in an array of social activities.
Volunteers are on hand to offer practical
and emotional support, lending an ear
to people who are at risk of social
exclusion.
The service aims to build the confidence
of clients by improving self-esteem,
encouraging independence and
promoting recovery.
Kate Brundle, ward manager, said that
Gud Bud volunteers visiting dementia
patients on Westerdale South at
Roseberry Park have made a positive
impact on service user’s experience.
“This scheme has encouraged our
service users to take part in reminiscence
and social activities giving them the
opportunity to share their stories and
memories. People with dementia can
often feel isolated and
An insight into...
Adele Coulthard
Director of operations, North
Yorkshire
What is the best thing about your job?
Meeting and working with so many
committed and enthusiastic staff and
volunteers, from all services and agencies,
who have a drive to continuously improve
care and seeing those improvements
implemented on the ground.
What was your first job?
I trained as a registered general nurse and
worked in orthopaedics as a staff nurse
before going to university. I recently met up
with someone I trained with and had a great
time reminiscing about ‘the good old days’.
Who’s had the greatest influence on
your career?
There are three people who have had a
significant influence. The first is Lionel Joyce,
when he was chief executive of Newcastle
Mental Health Trust. He showed me the
importance of leadership and culture and to
continually strive to do things better.
Secondly, Linda Ions when she was director
of business development in the same trust.
She had the faith to appoint me into my first
management role. The third person is Ann
McKenzie who was a previous director of
mental health services. Without her belief in
my capabilities and her coaching, I would
not be where I am today. They were
inspirational leaders in their field and have
left a lasting positive impression.
What’s the first thing you do when you
get home from work?
I usually get a huge hug from my seven year
old son, an update from him and my ten
year old daughter about their school day
and then, if it’s not my turn for the Guides
or football training run, I start making
dinner.
What was the last film you saw?
My husband and I took the children to see
the last Harry Potter film, The Deathly
Hallows Part 2. My son is into Star Wars so I
have watched all six films again and again
and …
What was the last book you read?
The Prince of Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafon – full
of magic, mystery and adventure.
What is your first memory?
My dad carrying me on his shoulders while
walking to my grandparents’ house. I
thought he was the tallest person in the
world.
Where did you spend your last holiday?
Menorca – a proper beach holiday with
buckets, spades, lots of swimming and tapas
every day!
What has been your proudest moment
to date?
There are so many things of which I am
proud such as being the first person in my
family to attend university, but the thing I
am most proud of is becoming a mother
and watching my children grow.
What is your main ambition in life?
To have fun, be happy and to have made a
positive difference in the lives of people I
meet.
Caring for carers Record
breakers
The trust made a firm commitment to
supporting carers with the launch of a
new strategy in October.
Written with the help of carers and
governors, the aim of the strategy is to
improve carers’ lives by making sure that
their needs are recognised and that services
are developed to meet those needs.
A carer can be anyone - adult or young
person, parent or child - and many people
do not see themselves as carers, for them it’s
simply part of normal every day life.
Carers of all ages told us that they want to
be involved and informed but also want us
Some of the carers and governors
involved in developing the carer’s strategy
to recognise that their caring role can have
an impact on their own health and
wellbeing.
Trust chairman, Jo Turnbull, said: “Carers
deserve the right kind of help and support
to look after their own health and
wellbeing. We want to help whenever we
can by offering information and support and
by signposting to appropriate agencies
whenever it is needed.”
More information about the support
available to carers will soon be available on
our website www.tewv.nhs.uk. In the
meantime, please contact Pauline King or
Fire safety team The
The trust’s fire safety team is
responsible for ensuring that all
staff are provided with the right
training to respond to any fire
alarm that actuates and for
carrying out fire risk assessments
of all trust premises.
A recent pilot of an evacuation drill at
the unused Farne building at Lanchester
Road Hospital in Durham proved very
successful. The exercise involved
introducing cosmetic smoke into the
building to simulate a fire scenario and
nursing staff were used both as on duty
personnel, as well as acting as patients.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and
Rescue Service was involved in the
exercise to demonstrate their rescue
techniques.
Following the success of the pilot
evacuation drill we intend to continue
with these exercises on a regular basis,
following identification of suitable
premises.
In the trust three fire safety advisors
make up the trust's team which forms
part of the estates and facilites
directorate. We cover Durham, Teesside
and parts of North Yorkshire. Two
advisors are based at Lanchester Road
Hospital in Durham and one at West
Lane Hospital in Middlesbrough. All
three have worked with the Fire and
Rescue Service and between them have
over 100 years of operational and fire
safety experience.
Our officers continue to maintain
excellent working relationships with their
former colleagues in the Fire Service by
inviting them to be involved in the desk
top exercises and by being part of
community liaison panels. The Fire
Service is the enforcing authority for fire
safety so it is important that good
working relationships are maintained.
Fire safety advice for Ryedale, Harrogate,
Hambleton and Richmondshire areas is
provided by a fire safety advisor
employed by North Yorkshire Primary
Care Trust.
Fire safety training is mandatory for staff
and is one of our key areas of work.
This is to ensure compliance with both
Department of Health guidelines and
The Regulatory (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
The way training is delivered in the trust
has changed over the years and from 1
January 2012 it will change again.
All non ward based staff will be trained
by using the trust’s e-learning fire safety
package. Community and non clinical
staff will be able to attend specific
training sessions arranged across the
trust area.
All ward based staff will continue to be
trained by the fire safety advisors face to
face and are not permitted to use elearning
for their training. The revised
training for ward based staff will be site
specific relating to their place of work
and will involve a desk top exercise, fire
extinguisher training and an
understanding of their fire alarm system.
The training will take up to 90 minutes
to deliver.
Another area of our work is to carry out
fire risk assessments of our trust
premises. All inpatient premises are
inspected annually and non clinical
premises, such as office accommodation,
are inspected on a risk based
programme.
Veterans share their stories
Two former military personnel have spoken to
BBC Radio Tees journalist Jonathan Swingler
(pictured right alongside Symon Day, veterans
lead for TEWV) about how the trust’s
Veterans Wellbeing Group has helped them
cope with their transition to civilian life. The
group aims to help protect and improve the
mental health of former military personnel.
It is run by TEWV staff who are either
veterans themselves or who have been
specially trained in veteran issues. In addition,
staff from 80 teams across the trust have now
been trained in veterans issues which means
we are better able to understand and help
former military personnel who access our
services. Find out more about the Veterans
We have seen some massive changes in
the trust over the past year and as we
near the end of 2011, I would like to
take this opportunity to thank each
and everyone one of you for your
continued support.
Recent successes, most notably gaining
the responsibility for providing services
in more of North Yorkshire; opening
the Northern Centre for Eating
Disorders and being named RC Psych
Mental Health Services Provider of the
Year 2011, would not be possible
without you.
Staff, service users, carers, governors,
members and partner organisations all
outstanding schemes in the region. To gain
recognition in design at the highest level is
an exceptional achievement for the trust.
Ridgeway
recruits
Ridgeway forensic services have been
developing an innovative way of
recruiting their future workforce. With
the expansion of forensic services this
advancement in recruitment has come at
just the right time.
Working to the trust’s strategic goal of
recruiting, developing and retaining a
skilled and motivated workforce, a
recruitment working group recently
piloted their new interview strategy.
The staff and patient representative group
used the strategy to recruit staff nurses to
work on their forensic mental health
wards.
The recruitment day began with a
presentation about the service, to
alleviate candidate’s pre-conceptions of
forensic services and to cement the
expectations that would be placed on
successful candidates. Following this the
candidates had interviews, took part in
two team scenario based exercises and
had to write a short reflective piece about
the task.
The scenario based exercises allowed
interviewers to note individual
characteristics against the post’s person
specification and measure good nurse
qualities against transferable skills.
By introducing this new recruitment
method forensic services can recruit the
right people into the right jobs, and retain
the positions for a substantial period of
time.
