Dermatological Photographic Society
Dear Colleague,
Dedicated to advancing the art and science
of dermatological photography
With the publication of the Retrieval System for Dermatological
Photographs, 4th Edition, this definitive coding guide approaches its
35th year as the standard imaging resource for dermatology.
Published by the Dermatological Photographic Society, the Retrieval
System was first conceived and developed by Stanford I. Lamberg, M.D.,
as a means of coding and managing image collections by arranging
dermatologic disorders in groups similar by appearance or etiology,
with additional listings for locating each disorder and its classification
alphabetically.
Used by many departments of dermatology to file their images and
familiar to most dermatologists, the Retrieval System was first published in
1969, and with the current edition has grown to include a total of 1,571
listings. As with previous editions, special thanks go to Stan Lamberg
for his work in updating the classifications and listings for this edition,
as well as to Fujisawa Healthcare, Inc., and Canfield Clinical Systems for
their support.
On behalf of the members of the Dermatological Photographic Society,
we hope you enjoy using this guide as an aid to classifying and utilizing
the dermatological images in your own clinical setting.
Good imaging,
Purpose of the Dermatological
Photographic Society
Formed in 1976, the purpose of the Dermatological Photographic
Society (DPS) is to advance the art and science of dermatological
photography through educational activities such as meetings and
workshops on medical photography, publication and distribution
of dermatological photography guides and articles, and related
educational projects.
Activities of the society
The Dermatological Photographic Society sponsors activities and
publications for dermatologists interested in learning about or
improving their use of clinical photography, including:
• DPS Breakfast – In conjunction with the annual meeting of
the American Academy of Dermatology, the DPS Breakfast
features speakers and programs covering the latest advances in
dermatological photography, as well as other pertinent issues
concerning photography and its use in the field of medicine.
• Retrieval System for Dermatological Photography, 4th Edition,
compiled and edited by Stanford I. Lamberg, M.D., of Johns
Hopkins Medicine – The DPS publishes and distributes this
definitive coding guide for dermatological photography.
How to Use the Retrieval System
The Retrieval System has two parts:
• Class Listing arranges dermatologic disorders in groups that
often look alike or have similar etiologies.
• Alphabetical Listing provides cross-referencing and synonyms
to locate the condition.
Use the Class Listing to select subjects for lectures, and use the
Alphabetical Listing to label and retrieve a specific disorder.
Class Listing includes 521 disorders. Alphabetical Listing includes all
the disorders in Class Listing as well as synonyms and disorders that fit
under each disorder, 1571 listings in all. For example, Class 15-50,
Congenital disorders NOS, includes many rare congenital disorders
which are listed separately in the Alphabetical Listing but indexed to a
single Class listing.
In a few cases, the index entry includes an additional letter (A-Z).The
letters divide some disorders into subsets not known at the time of
the 1st edition, more than 30 years ago. Users who already have slides
filed under this Retrieval System thus need not relabel them. Users
with a special interest in a specific area, such as occupational contact
dermatitis, can add letters A-Z to that entry to further subdivide the
category (1-02A, B, etc.) if desired.
To Organize by Therapy and Procedures: Place treatment pictures in
your collection in the following two ways.
• The procedure is not disease-specific: Place the pictures in the
Therapy and Procedures Class that corresponds to the technique
or add a new Class number to meet your needs. For example, put
your pictures of Cosmetic procedures in Class 22 or create new
Class, such as Class 22A, Liposuction.
• Both the disorder and the procedure are important: File the picture
under the Class number but include the number of the disorder
as well. For example, since BCC is Class 17-51, put a picture
from a patient with a BCC treated by Mohs in 20/17-51, or by
D&C, in 34/17-51.As above, if you have a special interest in any
technique, add a letter (A-Z) to the Therapy and Procedure Class
number to further subdivide the pictures.
