Loving God, you place deep in our hearts the love
of Mary, Help of Christians.
Through her prayers grant wisdom to our leaders
and integrity to our citizens.
Under her protection may Australia be granted
harmony, justice and peace.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Together, in community
From the Headmaster
Feast of Mary Help of Christians
Patroness of Australia
The feast of Our Lady Help of Christians was
instituted by Pope Pius VII in 1815. In this
time of restoration for the Church, Pope
Pius VII did much to promote Marian piety
among all.
In Australia 1844, there were only three
Bishops. At their very first Synod in that
year, they requested the Pope to declare,
as Australia’s special patron, the Mother
of God under the title of Mary Help of
Christians with her feast to be celebrated
on May 24th.
The feast was celebrated from 1844, even
though it was not officially approved by
Rome until 1852. The infant Church in
Australia had a special reason for turning to
Mary. In those early and mostly priestless
days, it was largely the Rosary that kept
the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained
faithful to Mary, and was the first nation
to choose her, under the title of Help of
Christians, as principal Patroness.
Mary’s faith, hope and love models true
discipleship through all ages. Just as she
was a source of strength and leadership for
Jesus and our early Christian family, so she
remains our inspiration and guide today.
CELEBRATIONS FOR CHAMPAGNAT DAY 2012
On Tuesday 5th June 2012, the feast of our founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat, will
be celebrated at the College.
Celebrations will commence with Masses at the College at 9.00am and 10.30am
followed by a BBQ lunch. In the afternoon students will participate in sporting,
community service or cultural activities.
Parents and families are warmly invited to attend a Mass and seating is available
for visitors. The College has a fine tradition of celebrating special liturgies and we
hope you will take the opportunity to join us to celebrate the feast of Marcellin
Champagnat.
Mass for Mark, McMahon, Othmar and Patrick Houses and 5A, 4P, 5M, 5T, 6R, 6B
and 6D from the Junior school will commence at 9.00 am.
Mass for Conway, Crispin, Darlinghurst and Haydon Houses and 4M, 6I, 5D, 6L, 6H
and 4S from the Junior school will commence at 10.30 am
After Mass boys from Years 4 –12 will participate in a BBQ, the cost of which is
covered by the excursion levy. This will also cover the cost of morning tea. All boys
are expected to participate in this community event to celebrate our Feast Day.
Following the BBQ, students will have an opportunity to get changed for afternoon
activities which have been chosen in advance. In a few cases there is a cost involved
and your son will have these details.
During the afternoon Year 12 students will be involved in community service activities
around Canberra. This has been a feature of our Champagnat Day celebrations over
the past few years. Year 11 students will assist with the organisation of the large
variety of activities offered during the afternoon in the senior and junior schools.
In the event of wet weather, the celebrations would continue with a slightly altered
format. Afternoon classes would be those of Day 7.
The annual College celebration of our Feast Day is always a most enjoyable and
memorable occasion for the boys. We trust that Tuesday June 5 will be a continuation
of this tradition. Parents and students are reminded that attendance on the day is
mandatory (except in the case of any students who are genuinely ill). Full school
uniform should be worn in the morning and students should bring Marist sports
uniform (or other appropriate clothing dependant upon the activity) for the
afternoon activities.
Yours sincerely,
Year 8 Camp
Year 8 camp started with a brisk early departure to the warmer climates of the
Mismosa National Parks. After an enjoyable bus ride and short stop, the students
met their instructors and guides for the next three days of the camp.
The instructors taught the students how to pack and waterproof their bags. Though
no rain was predicted, there were plenty of opportunities throughout the camp for
the students to test out these new skills.
Each group set off on their first walk with packs loaded, eager to see the sights
and beauty of Tathra. Once the walk was completed for the day, the students and
instructors made their first camp, with tents popping up everywhere. There was a
hive of activity as students collected firewood and set up for dinner.
The students had to prepare and cook their own meals on their new found tool the
‘Trangia’. Student and teachers looked as if the ‘Masterchef’ crew was filming as they
displayed a variety of culinary skills... but there were also plenty of mishaps! Once
fed, the students were happy to fall into bed and rest for the next day’s activities.
The students learnt a lot about different knots and lashings. They were to build a
raft that would take them safely across the cold water. It would take a great deal of
communication and teamwork to get through this early morning challenge of raft
building, but the boys performed admirably.
The sun was starting to warm our adventurous groups as they crossed over the lake.
They displayed great skill as they piloted the raft across the current.
Students finished off their camp with a trek back to their starting point which
allowed them to reflect on their adventures and have a good lunch.
Thanks go to the students for their behaviour and work on the camp, to the seniors
for their support and advice to the students and to the teachers for all their hard
work. Thanks must also go to Col anad Liz and their staff at Coastlife for a wonderful
program.
MARIST REGIONAL GATHERING
Simon Rugala
On Wednesday 16 May, 25 Canberra Marists (parents, supporters, staff, Brothers) gathered in the Pavilion for discussions concerning the future of Marist ministry
across Australia and in Canberra particularly. Presenters were Brother Allen Sherry and Mr Rick Sidorko, Headmaster. Ideas were gathered from the group
relating to the future ministry of Marists, in the context of the imminent formation of a new unified Province (governing structure) for Marists within Australia,
replacing the former provinces of Sydney and Melbourne.
Among other ideas that emerged were a strong affirmation of the school ministry here at Marist College and a desire to maintain the post-school links with
students.
TRAFFIC AND
ROAD SAFETY
There is inevitable traffic congestion during the
students’ peak arrival and departure times each day.
We ask all drivers to be patient, and mindful of safety
and courtesy toward others.
In particular:
• Please do not drive through the College front driveway at these times
• Please do not leave your vehicle unattended in drop-off and pickup areas
• If your son is not waiting at the agreed spot, please move on and drive
around again so as not to hold up the traffic flow
• Please do not park so as to block Gate 1 where buses enter
• Please obey the “Left Turn Only 8 am–8.45am, 3 pm–3.45pm“ signs from
the College driveways into Marr Street. Cars waiting to turn right create
congestion in the driveway.
MARIST SWIMMERS COMPETE IN
MS 24 HOUR SWIMATHON
Last weekend saw three Marist swimmers, Lachlan Colquhoun (10 Pa), Nathan
Seddon (11 Da) and Sean Maloney (12 Oth), join Marist old boys Dylan
Appelqvist (2010) and Niall Jacobsen (2009) as members of a team that swam
in the Canberra 24 hour Mega Swim. This event raises money to provide support
for people living with MS through the Go for Gold Scholarships and Financial
Assistance Program. The Canberra event, with over 360 swimmers in 26 teams,
raised in excess of $130 000. The boys’ team of 9 swimmers, the Woden Sharks,
raised approximately $2000.
This fun and rewarding mega swim relay requires each team to swim continuously
from 12 noon Saturday until 12 noon Sunday. While the main focus is raising
money for MS, there is also a competition for the greatest distance covered in
the 24 hour period. This year the team swam a staggering 123.5 km, breaking the
record of 112 km set last year by the same team.
RSPCA Million Paws Walk
On Sunday, 20th May, the Marist Animal Justice Society
(MAJS) walked as a Marist team to support the 2012
Million Paws Walk. It was a great day; an impressive
number of dogs and their owners alike had a chance
to stretch their legs and have fun! The Million Paws
Walk raised over $19,000 for the RSPCA in the ACT
alone. This money will help fund the great work the
Busy Bees
Zac Eldridge (10 Ma) and Jayith Gamage (12 Ot) put
their hands up last week to help out at the Corpus
Christi working bee at the old St Francis of Assisi
Church in Calwell. They generously gave up their
time and were busy for over 2 hours pulling out
weeds, tidying up the garden beds and assisting
with the landscaping. I was really impressed by their
enthusiasm and the way they just got in there and did
what was needed. Well done boys, some Silver Mates
hours are coming your way!
When I visited the place, I saw there were about five
people, all much older than us working doing the
intended service. Without wasting a minute, I got into
working with them and making sure I did the work
properly. At the end of the day I met a lot of new people
including the Father of the parish and talked with them
RSPCA does and will support animal rescues. This was
the first of the Marist Animal Justice Society’s projects,
with more projects coming up in semester 2. We’re a
group to watch! To join MAJS, simply come along to
our weekly meetings, Tuesday lunchtimes, in ET16.
Adrian Olsen (9MA1)
while working. They were quite happy to see boys such
as Zac and myself helping and taking an initiative to
come and do some service. One strong thing that was
stuck in my mind was their commitment towards the
parish and how they sacrificed some of their time in
order to help it. Although it wasn’t directly associated
in helping people, it still helped the environment which
everyone needs to live in. After doing the gardening, they
were so thankful for our help and hopefully created a
positive image regarding the service of Marist.
Jayith Gamage (12OT5)
Parents and friends of Marist, if you know of any group
or individual one that could benefit from this sort of
assistance or other basic manual tasks, please let me
know and I can try and arrange similar opportunities
for Marist boys to serve in our community.
Everyone is going Clackers
Last week in the Service Learning component of the Year 8 Brothers
Together program, the students produced over 200 wooden
clackers for kids less fortunate themselves in developing countries.
They will be sent over to the children as part of Operation Christmas
Child Shoe boxes, but before this happens the clackers will need to
be given a bright coat of paint and decoration. This is where Year 5
students in the Junior School come into the picture. Year 5 students
recently completed their ‘Love of Work’ themed Brothers Together
program and have generously accepted the challenge to join the
Clackers 4 Kids project, by painting and decorating the clackers
that the Year 8’s produced. Well done boys, we can’t wait to see the
final product.
I liked the whole Brothers Together day I think it was BRILLIANT but
if I had to choose what I liked most it would have to be making the
clackers. I think that is was a great way to help the organisation
Christmas child, I really liked how everyone got in and did their bit to
help build the clackers but this could not have been done without the
amazing help of the wood work teachers.
Jack Radulovich (8OT5)
The Brothers Together Program was a great idea from my perspective
and thought it was quite enjoyable. Since Friday when I was involved
with it, it got me thinking about doing more Service work. Especially
working in the Solomon Islands Immersion tour would be a fantastic
opportunity to get involved with a developing country and see how
they live. The other thing I really enjoyed was the clackers. Besides
having a bit of fun it was nice to make something for someone who
wouldn’t receive anything for Christmas. In a short film we watched,
there was a little boy who was over the moon from receiving presents
and he hadn’t even opened the box. This meant a lot to me so I put
in an extra effort to make a child extra happy when he received the
present.
Ethan Rosin (8CO7)
After reading these reflections from the Year 8 students, you can
tell that the real ‘product’ from the Brothers Together Day isn’t the
Clackers, in fact it’s the students themselves and their growing
realisation about how they can make a positive difference in the
life of someone else.
Rex Band
‘music that makes sense’
Last Thursday night Rex Band lit up the stage at the Canberra
Theatre and 10 Marist boys were lucky enough to be part of an
entertaining and powerful musical extravaganza. The boys told me
it was “packed out” and “really awesome”. They were very grateful
for being sent to such an amazing performance. We would like
to make a special thanks to Frawley’s Shoe Store who generously
sponsored 15 of our Marist boys and a teacher to go to the concert.
Hockey Club Report
The cold weather has arrived and hockey parents frantically searched their wardrobes for
the winter hockey woollies. Round 2 saw some very pleasing results - from both the sideline
fashion and hockey perspectives!
U18/1
Marist 2- Old Canberrans (OCHC) 4. Marist started their third round well even though they
faced early pressure from the OCHC but they also countered attacks with regular incursions
deep into the opposition’s half. Some examples were an early penalty corner (2nd minute)
which was countered by a penalty corner at the opposite end in the very next minute. This toand-fro
movement soon resulted in succumbing to a goal in the 8th minute but again Marist
responded quickly with an entertaining goal from Jeremy Hopkins off a feed from Nathan
Pereira resulting from a steal in the OCHC half. We managed to get a couple more short corners
but were unable to convert. OCHC then sustained pressure just before half time but the half
finished at 1-1.
In the second half again the opposition came back strongly to force a penalty corner but Marist
surprised them with the first goal five minutes into the half from a quick Henry Grayston. Once
again true to the evenness of the game, OCHC came back to force a penalty corner and scored
again in the next minute. Then OCHC scored two more goals in the 10th and 13th minute. But
from then on the goals stopped and for the next 12 minutes of the game to the end Marist
maintained composure, tried hard to respond and defended particularly well. The game
defence was led by Callum Beaumont, Tom Barton and Matthew D’Souza.
Canberra Half Marathon on Sunday 20 May, a
distance of 21.1km. At 16 years of age, Patrick
Junior School Happenings
Dear Marist Families,
As a father of teenage daughters, I frequently
find myself challenged with ‘communication
issues’. Though my daughters and I talk, it’s
usually only when we stop for a hug or can
find some time just to ‘be together’ that real
connections are made.
It’s like that with God, too. But easier.
God knows and understands us, better than we do ourselves, and
certainly wants a relationship with us. So, if we want a relationship with
God, we have to work on it; give it time, be with God.
I believe this is what Confirmation is about for our boys. As the majority
of our Year 6 boys prepare for and celebrate their Confirmation in the
coming months I ask you to keep them in your prayers. As parents, we can
help by guiding them to find ways to spend time with God. Hopefully, by
spending time and being open, our boys will hear, as Paul did on the road
to Damascus (Act 9:1-9) and know that God wants to work his miracles
though them.
BBLB
Have you been surprised in recent weeks to hear your son talk about
their new ‘“big brother’? We are very fortunate to have around 80 (that’s
5 or 6 in each class) Year 11 boys spending time in Junior School classes
once a week for the next two terms. These Senior boys have volunteered
their time and will work with the teachers to provide support and
encouragement to our Junior School boys.
Blue and Blue Ball
It was a fantastic night at the Hellenic Club last Friday. Many parents, staff
and other friends of Marist enjoyed the music and company of each other
at the annual Blue and Blue Ball. On behalf of everyone who attended, I
thank the hard working band of parents who organised the Ball for our
benefit.
Reconciliation Week
At last Sunday’s feast of the Ascension we heard that Jesus’ final act on
earth was to speak to his disciples about God’s Kingdom. This reminds us
of Jesus’ calling us to unity. Jesus calls us to acknowledge wrong doing
The Great Book
Swap Challenge
Many thanks to the families who have already
donated books to the Great Book Swap.
Students have until the end of this week to add
to the donation boxes.
The Great Book Swap itself (which works
essentially like a second hand book stall) will
occur next Monday and Tuesday. Students
are asked to bring in a gold coin to swap for a
book. This fundraiser is in aid of the Indigenous
Literacy Foundation.
and to seek forgiveness. Jesus is also very clear in his call for us to forgive
others who hurt us. Reconciliation is precisely about this – acknowledging
wrong, seeking and accepting forgiveness from those who have been
wronged. This is the challenge for Australians today as we continue the
journey of healing that will lead to National Reconciliation. The presence
of God within and among us makes this journey possible. We are as Saint
Paul says all ‘one body’ in Christ. God calls us to unity and God shows us
the way. We need the courage, generosity, and humility to follow.
We pray during this week for the grace to be people with generous and
forgiving hearts who will be instruments for reconciliation in our families
and our communities.
Cyber Safety Talks
The Australian Federal Police will speak with boys in Years 5 and 6 next
Monday on the topic of Cyber Safety. These talks were also presented last
year and were a valuable eye opener for the boys.
Monthly Awards
Congratulations to the boys who received awards at last week’s assembly.
Please click here to read a list of the recipients.
Thank You
Our thanks to Cathy Donoghue who recently, as part of last year’s Year
6 presentation to the Junior School, presented the school with a lovely
calligraphy framed version of the Memorarae. Cathy designed and wrote
the piece herself and it is on display in the foyer.
Peace be with you
Library News - by Karen Collins, Teacher Librarian – Junior School
By the end of this week, all boys
will have received their challenge
booklets and should be well on
their way to achieving their first
medal by reading the first of
many books. The purpose of this
challenge is to motivate your son
to read more widely and more
often.
Marist Olympic
Reading Challenge
Both classroom teachers and the
library staff will work to encourage
the boys to participate. However,
your support is crucial. As well
as signing off on ‘reading event’
sheets as your son finishes a
set of books, please take the
time to chat to your son about
what books he is choosing and
which ‘events’ he has decided to
participate in. Your enthusiasm
will be infectious!
If you need any clarification
about the challenge or you
have any concerns, please email
