ROCK CLIMBING 11 Contents For the last ten years, <strong>Petzl</strong> RocTrips have assembled diverse climbers of all levels at the most beautiful sites on the climbing planet. 2011: China's year! From the rice paddies in the Getu Valley of Guizhou Province, there emerge sculpted walls, magnificent caves and the unforgettable Chuanschang Arch. Today there are 250 lines at this site, graded from 4 to 9, that were spotted and put up by local climbers and members of Team <strong>Petzl</strong>. ROCK CLIMBING Belaying with a GRIGRI 2 assisted braking belay device 12 Contents © Marc Daviet A number of incidents, particularly in climbing gyms, have resulted in climber ground-falls. Analysis shows that there is a risk of ground-fall when clipping until the fourth draw. Several factors may increase the risk of a ground-fall: • the length of rope out from the last clipped bolt • the slack taken for clipping, particularly when clipping with a fully extended arm • the rope stretch In addition, there are causes directly linked to belaying: • the rope running through the system before jamming if the belay technique is incorrect • too much slack given by the belayer • the movement of the belayer if he is surprised and/or too far from the wall before the fall By following the recommendations below, the belayer will increase the safety of the climber: • remain attentive in order to anticipate any situation • choose a good position at the base of the route • manipulate the belay advice appropriately Information is non-exhaustive.
