<strong>and</strong> sea-fish.<br />

VI. Sauyodo, or way of <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn side of <strong>the</strong> mountains, has eight ,<br />

provinces :<br />

1. Farima (twelve districts); cities, Fi'medzi, Akazi, Ako, Tatsfu ; pro-<br />

ductions, fish, sheli-fish, salt, saddles, lea<strong>the</strong>r, looking-glasses, kettles, steel,<br />

cast-iron, a kind of very viscous rice, which is used to distil excellent saki.<br />

2. Miinasaka (seven districts) ; citie^ Tsuyania, Katsu-yania ; produc-<br />

tions, saltpetre, stones for grinding ink. 3. Bizen (eight districts); capital,<br />

Oka-y.-una<br />

; productions, large cuttle-fishes, sea-fish, mosses, porcelain, edi-<br />

ble marine herbs. 4. Bitsiu (nine districts) ; capital, Matsu-yama ; productions,<br />

paper of various kinds <strong>and</strong> colors, pears, lacker, iron. 5. Bingo<br />

(fourteen districts) ; capital, Fuku-yama ; productions, silk fabrics, suimnerhats,<br />

rock-spari <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sea-fish. 6. Aki (eight districts) ; capital, Firosima<br />

; productions, paper, baskets, saltpetre, rock-crystal, dried figs, mal-<br />

lows, fish. 7. Suwo (six districts); cities, Tok-yama, Fook-yama ; produc-<br />

tions, paper, red color, cloths, edible bamboo. 8. Nagata (six districts);<br />

cities, Faki, Tsio-fu, Fu-uaka ; productions, porcelain, green color, fish,<br />

Btones to grind ink, lime, shell-fish, models.<br />

VII. Nankaydo, or sou<strong>the</strong>rn way of <strong>the</strong> sea, contains six provinces :<br />

1. Kiy (seven districts); cities, Waka-yama, Tona-be, Sinmiya (with<br />

celebrated temple, dedicated to <strong>the</strong> god of physic, surrounded with several<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs); productions, medicinal plants, oranges, various kinds of wine, soles,<br />

mallows, shell-fish, whales, carp, oysters, pulse, <strong>and</strong> edible plants, melons,<br />

honey, vegetable glue, mosses, chestnuts, timber, ink, wooden bowls, paper<br />

to make parasols, bows, jewelry articles, draftmen, grindstones. '2. Awasi<br />

(two districts); capital of this isle, Sumoto or Smoto ; fish, stones of different<br />

colors, tree cotton. 3. Awa (nine districts); capital, Toksima ; produc-<br />

tions, oysters, precious stones of a blue color (lapis lazuli?), cloths, firewood,<br />

flints. 4. Sanuki (eleven districts); cities, Take-mats, Marukameh<br />

; productions, fish, oysters <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r shell-fish, sea-crabs. 5. lyo<br />

(fourteen districts); cities, Matsu-yama, Uwa-yama, Imobari, Sayzio, Ko-<br />

m-it-, Daisu, Dago ; productions, pulse, fish, edible marine herbs, paper,<br />

hawks, mats, cloths. G. Tusa (seven districts); capital, Kotsi ; produc-<br />

tions, trained horses, monkeys, salted fish, shell-fish, cloths, pnper, ink,<br />

baskets, honey, hemp, timber. J\~ulf. The provinces of Awa, Sanuki, lyo,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Tusa, belong to <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> called Sikokf ; that is, " of <strong>the</strong> four<br />

provinces."<br />

VIII. Stiyknydo, or western way of <strong>the</strong> sea, comprehends nine provinces<br />

of <strong>the</strong> large isl<strong>and</strong> of Kiusiu, formerly also called Tsin-sae-fu, or " <strong>the</strong> west-<br />

ern military government " :<br />

1. Tsikoozen (fifteen districts); cities, Fookoo-oka, Akitsuki ; productions,<br />

silk manufactures like <strong>the</strong> Chinese, saki, fish, wild geese, cast-iron
