<strong>the</strong> productions of Jeso, in<br />

particular, are as follows : konbu, or sea-cabbage, birds of prey for hawk-<br />

ing, whales <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sea-fish, skins of otters, beavers, seals, <strong>and</strong> stags, cas-<br />

toreum, gold, silver, adamantine spar. 8. Dewa (twelve districts) ; cities,<br />

Yone-sawa, Yama-gata, Onewe-no-yama, Sinsio, Sionay, Akita ; productions,<br />

sea-cabbage, safflower, a very large kind of hemp, wax, lacker, oiled<br />

paper, madder, tin, lead, silver, sulphur, deer-skins, horses.<br />

IV. Fookoorokudo, or way of <strong>the</strong>^nor<strong>the</strong>rn districts, comprehends seven<br />

provinces :<br />

1. Wakasa (three districts); capital, Kobama ; productions, white rice<br />

pionies, pulp of lotus-flowers, perfume-bags, cloths, mosses, paper, saki , pen<br />

cils, stones for grinding ink, black stones for draft or chess boards, lime,<br />

many kinds of fish. 2. Yetsisen (twelve districts); towns, Fookie, Foo-<br />

cheu, Maruoka, Ono, Sabafe, Katsu-yama ; productions, lead,<br />

different sorts<br />

of paper, cloths, silk fabrics, cotton goods, hats woven from <strong>the</strong> filaments<br />

of herbs, grindstones, oil extracted from <strong>the</strong> seeds of <strong>the</strong> dry<strong>and</strong>ra cordata,<br />

much fish. 3. Yetsiu (four districts); capital, Toyama ; productions, salt-<br />

petre, yellow lotus, lead, cotton cloths, taffetas, fish. 4. Yetsingo (seven<br />

districts) ; cities, Takata, Naga-oka, Simbota, Mura-kami, Itsumo-saki, Moramats<br />

; productions, lead, lacker, wax, white mustard, various cotton fabrics,<br />

white hares, sturgeons <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r fish, deal <strong>and</strong> larch wood. 5. Kaga (four<br />

districts); cities, Kanazawa ,(with <strong>the</strong> celebrated Buddhic temple Dai'siu-si),<br />

Komats ; productions, paper, skins for drums, small thread, wine of mo<strong>the</strong>r-<br />

wort, yellow lotus, sulphur, silk, satins. 6. Noto (four districts) ; this province<br />

has no cities ; <strong>the</strong> most considerable towns are Soos-no-misaki, Kawa-<br />

siri, Nanao ; productions, sea-fish, divers kinds of mosses, colored stones<br />

washed up by <strong>the</strong> sea. 7. Sado (three districts); <strong>the</strong> capital of this isle is<br />

Koki ; productions, gold, silver, yellow lotus, deal <strong>and</strong> larch-wood.<br />

V. Sanindo, or way of <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn sides of <strong>the</strong> mountains, contains eight<br />

provinces :<br />

1. Tango (five districts) ; cities, Miyazu, Tanabeh ; productions, hemp,<br />

baskets, silk, taffetas, fish <strong>and</strong> shell-fish, umbrellas, iron, timber for build-<br />

ing. 2. Tonba (six districts) ; cities, Kame-yama, Sasa-yama, Fooktsiyama<br />

; productions, China-root, wax, quinces, chestnuts, tobacco, cloths,<br />

tea, topazes, sheaths for knives <strong>and</strong> sabres. 3. Tasima (six districts); cities,<br />

Idzusi or Daisi, Toyo-oka ; productions, small ginseng, pionies, yellow lotus,<br />

medicinal <strong>and</strong> edible herbs, cotton, hawks for hunting, pepper, silver, grind-<br />

stones. 4. Inaba (seven districts) ; capital, Totstori ; productions, vege-<br />

table wax, paper, melons, dried fish, ginger. 5. Foki (six districts); capital,<br />

Yonego ; productions, iron, steel, bear's-gall, a medicine greatly in<br />

repute among <strong>the</strong> <strong>Japan</strong>ese, pans to fry fish. 6. Idzumo (ten districts);<br />

capital, Matsugeh ; productions, iron, steel, sabres, fish, shell-fish, melons,<br />

cloths. 7. Iwami (six districts); cities, Tsoowano, Famada ; productions,<br />
