in order, <strong>and</strong> he himself up <strong>and</strong> dressed, in <strong>the</strong> twinkling of an eye ;<br />

as, in fact, scarcely a longer time is requisite<br />

gown over him, which serves for dress by day <strong>and</strong> bed-clo<strong>the</strong>s at<br />

disorders. Nei<strong>the</strong>r do <strong>the</strong>ir open manure vaults, placed by <strong>the</strong> road-<br />

hides <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> very fronts of <strong>the</strong>ir houses, agree so well with this<br />

At Kokura <strong>the</strong> Dutch bespoke, against <strong>the</strong>ir return, rice <strong>and</strong><br />

charcoal for <strong>the</strong> factory at Desima. Having crossed to Simonoseki,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y embarked, on <strong>the</strong> 12th of March, in a large <strong>Japan</strong>ese junk, for<br />

Osaka ; but, having made less than half <strong>the</strong> voyage, <strong>the</strong>y encoun-<br />

tered contrary winds, which drove <strong>the</strong>m a long distance back, <strong>and</strong><br />

detained <strong>the</strong>m for near three weeks. The wea<strong>the</strong>r was so cold as<br />

to make fires comfortable, <strong>and</strong> colds <strong>and</strong> catarrhs, endemical to<br />

<strong>Japan</strong> from <strong>the</strong> changeability of it? climate, were very prevalent.<br />

All this time <strong>the</strong>y slept on board, but had several times an oppor-<br />

tunity to go on shore to amuse <strong>the</strong>mselves at <strong>the</strong> inns <strong>and</strong> temples,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Japan</strong>ese sailors being always anxious to l<strong>and</strong> in order to<br />

ba<strong>the</strong>.<br />

The country all along this coast was mountainous, which was <strong>the</strong><br />

reason of going by sea instead of by l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> road being very<br />

difficult. This coast seemed, never<strong>the</strong>less, to be highly cultivated,<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountains in many places resembling beautiful gardens.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> places where <strong>the</strong>y l<strong>and</strong>ed, <strong>the</strong> children were very numer-<br />
