Comments: Japanese populations represent hybrids between the European Carcinus maenas and the Mediterranean C.
aestuarii (Darling et at., 2008). The non-native Carcinus in South Africa may represent C. maenas, C. aestuarii, both
species, or a hybrid of the two (Carlton and Cohen, 2003), and Mead et al. (2011) does not list C. maenas in South
Africa.
