The Dove COMMUNITY LUNCHES Thank you to everyone who supports the Community Lunches which continue to go from strength to strength. It’s great to see so many people turn up on a regular basis but it is also heartwarming for the team when we see some new faces. When we began this venture we were getting between 20-25 people for lunch and numbers have steadily grown and we are now serving approx. 40 lunches. At the present time the lunches are on the 4 th Wednesday in the month but as the numbers have grown we hope to also serve lunches on the 2 nd Wednesday of the month. This will begin in September for a trial period until Christmas. From May – August we will be serving Ploughman’s Lunch or Sandwiches still only £2.50. This year we gave £250 to Sundhar Dokha Church in Nepal and £200 for Church Funds. Do come along and join us for lunch, it’s for everyone from babes in arms to let’s just say the more mature persons. We need volunteers to make soup – this would only be a couple of times a year on a rota basis. It would be wonderful if you could help. Contact: Barbara 944 33120 Winnie 90 840778 FLOWER GUILD Last Year’s 40 th Celebrations was the biggest challenge for our group since we started in 1999. We were very privileged to decorate the church. This event has been viewed in the NIGFAS Facebook by people all over the world as far away as Japan and America. We were indebted to our own Church Members who supported us at the Festival and throughout the year without your generosity we could not have done it, THANK YOU ALL. Lots of visitors to our church on this occasion have since joined our guild, we now have a regular attendance of 20 each Month Anyone who would like to join our group should come along on the first Monday in September. You can take part or just watch have a cup of tea and a chat and join in our fellowship. George Madden Dove Drama News Rehearsals are well underway for 'I'll Get My Man' a comedy by Phillip King. It promises lots of giggles as TV star Peter Graham’s efforts to escape hoards of female admirers by visiting his Uncle Humphrey’s vicarage fall flat when his uncle advertises for a new wife with hilarious consequences. Performances are Fri 20th and Sat 21st July at the Courtyard Theatre and tickets are £10 & £8 concession We will be manning the BBQ at the Garden Fete again this year but will also be serving Bacon Baps in the morning and sandwiches in the afternoon along side our usual burger and hotdog meal deals. The Dove SELECT VESTRY The Rector a few weeks ago announced in church that he would like to see a report from all the Organisations to appear in the magazine. I wondered, therefore, if readers would be interested in some of the activities of the Select Vestry in the past year. If not, please feel free to peruse the rest of this magazine. But even if you have only a cursory interest in the goings on of the Vestry......read on! Of course the highlight last year for the Vestry and indeed the whole Parish was the 40 th Anniversary Celebrations. I wish that I could say that the Vestry could take all the credit for it being a success, but that would not be strictly true. It did have the foresight though to bring together some of the most talented people in the Parish to organise events which will be remembered for many years to come. The individuals who made up the committees (and others too numerous to mention) and who organised the Flower Festival, Services and Mission Week, spent a lot of time and effort to make the Celebrations a success and the Vestry and the Parish are greatly indebted to them. Having people who knew what they were doing to organise the 40 th Anniversary Celebrations meant that the Vestry could get on with more mundane matters. And nothing is more mundane than finance. That is not to say that the Vestry does not take its financial responsibilities seriously. On the contrary, the Vestry is very aware that every penny that comes into church funds is generously donated and therefore must be spent wisely. As everyone knows, it is a fact that costs are rising every year and of course the church is not exempt from this. Last year rising costs in electricity, rates, water etc. etc. meant that the Vestry had a real struggle at times to pay the bills. It is a tough ask for people who are already stretched to the limit to review their giving, but are there some who are reading this who could put another pound a week into their envelope? Moving off that prickly subject of money the Vestry was greatly heartened by the good work the Youth Organisations are doing within the church. The B.B., G.B., Youth Club and Club J are all excellent organisations that do marvellous work. The Vestry supported and will continue to support the vital work the leaders undertake for the benefit of the young people in our Parish. Other matters the Vestry dealt with last year were routine repairs and maintenance, the theft of lead from the church roof and health and safety. As you can see it is not what you would call a barrel of laughs (though we do have our moments), but it is necessary work nonetheless. Moving to this year the Vestry has a number of projects ahead. One of them is to consider the possibility of re-arranging the interior lay-out of the church. At this early stage the Vestry are only looking into the possibilities, but whatever the outcome, whether the church is moved around, or even if it stays the same, the most important thing of all is to provide a place of worship which glorifies God and where EVERYONE is made to feel welcome. CHOIR NOTES John Nesbitt Honorary Secretary to the Select Vestry Now that Palm Sunday and Easter are well behind us we have started to practice for Harvest! On Palm Sunday the choir sang an anthem at the morning service and as a few of our members were on holiday we sang a short anthem on Easter Sunday. On Saturday 16th June the choir will once again be responsible for the hamper, so everyone have your £1 coins at the ready and come and support us at our stall. Our choir practice resumes on the first Thursday in September which is the 6th. We are always on the look out for new members so if anyone would like to join us, please contact our organist Miss Jane McCartney 90848854 or any member of the choir.
