The Dove MOSSLEY PARISH MENS SOCIETY On the 16 TH April we had a visit from Sandy Smith who gave us a very informative talk on C.S.Lewis. Since the publication in the 1950s of his internationally recognised and much loved Chronicles of Narnia, CS Lewis is now one of the most widely known authors who was born in Belfast. Even among his avid readers there are still many who are not aware of his roots in 19th and early 20th century Belfast. Mr Smith illustrated his talk with some very early photographs of both C.S.Lewis and his family and gave us the background to his early years.and the places which were associated with his life here in Northern Ireland. Sandy Smith escorts Literary tours around Belfast on a regular basis to all the C S Lewis sights…these can be booked through the Belfast Welcome Centre. —–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– On the 14 th May 14 members paid a visit to the Flying Angel Centre the home of the Mission to Seafarers in the port of Belfast. We were welcomed by Rev Colin Hall-Thompson and he took us on a tour of the port in the centers minibus,visiting all the wharfs,he explained which goods arrived at which wharf and gave an overview of the workings of the port. We then returned to the centre and visited the small chapel before having tea/coffee and biscuits, and then to the conference centre where we had a Q & A session and Colin gave us a potted history of the Mission to Seamen, now the Mission to Seafarers. Piracy, shipwreck, abandonment and separation from loved ones are just a few of the problems merchant seafarers face. Around the world, The Mission to Seafarers provides help and support to the 1.2 million men and women who face danger every day to keep our global economy afloat. As a Christian agency, they work in 250 ports caring for seafarers of all ranks, nationalities and beliefs. Through a global network of chaplains, staff and volunteers they offer practical, emotional and spiritual support to seafarers through ship visits, drop-in centres and a range of welfare and emergency support services. In over 100 ports the Flying Angel centres provide a ‘home away from home’ for seafarers who may have been at sea for up to two years. Here they can enjoy time away from their ship and use internet and phone facilities to get in touch with loved ones after months away In an emergency, the MtS is often the only help on offer. No matter what problem a seafarer is facing, be it injury, abandonment, non-payment of wages or personal difficulties, they know they can turn to the local Mission for help, advice and support. Their chaplains and volunteers offer practical and financial support, advocacy services, family liaison or simply a space to talk in a time of crisis. The Mission to Seafarers was founded in 1856 and is entirely funded by voluntary donations After a very entertaining and informative evening we gave Colin our best wishes for his continuing good work. The Dove Prayer Group This little group meets in the Pentecost Room on a Wednesday evening at 7 pm. We sing a Hymn, have a Bible Reading and say a few prayers. It is all very informal. There are now about eight or nine of us but we don’t always manage to attend every week. At first I went because I felt that I needed to pray and wanted to be with others who felt similarly. I found that I was made most welcome, in spite of the fact that I was not going to attend at the “bowls” afterwards. I was allowed to “do my own thing”. On my first night I was made to feel that it was a matter for my own conscience as to whether I wanted to pray in silence or speak out loud. I mention anyone I want who I feel is in need of prayer, whether or not they ask me. Any names mentioned are treated in the strictest of confidence. I do not even need to say why I am praying for them. I just have to think about them. We have a list of names that people have given to us, sometimes they tell us what they want the prayer for, sometimes they don`t, but that `s OK. One of our little group comes every week with a smile on her face; she meets people and speaks to them. She tells them her troubles and they tell her theirs. Sometimes she remembers their names, sometimes she forgets but that`s OK too. If your feel that you want a prayer just get in touch with any one of us, leave a note or come along and join us. If you don`t feel like it you don`t have to come back, we will still love you anyway. We want to be there for you and to help you in any way that we can.
