<strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s 2011-2012 registration process will start on March 17 th through March 29 th . Listed<br />

below includes registration dates and instructions for course selection. During the registration process students<br />

can access the 2011-2012 Program of Study, by clicking on the link below.<br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Registration Dates<br />

Thursday, March 24 th –Tuesday, March 29 th – Guidance will meet with students to review course selections and<br />

submit their completed <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Registration Form.<br />

Registration Information<br />

The registration process is an important step towards entering high school. It allows them the opportunity to<br />

prepare for their high school career. To ensure that each student registers for the appropriate courses, we ask<br />

that you review the Union County Program of Studies. The Program of Studies provides the North Carolina<br />

Graduate Requirements and course descriptions. <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s Guidance Department looks<br />

forward to having a seamless registration process this year, and we welcome any questions or concerns.<br />

The “A” Honor Roll Breakfast will take place on Wednesday, March 30 th at 9:00am. The students invited will<br />

receive their invitation on Tuesday in their 1 st period class.<br />

• NCVPS Summer Registration<br />

Have you gotten the Virtual Advantage? The NC Virtual Public <strong>School</strong> and Learn and Earn Online mission is to<br />

provide the skills, student support, and opportunities for 21st century learners to succeed in a globally<br />

competitive world. We work with today’s learners and tomorrow's leaders by offering over 100 courses<br />

including advanced placement, world languages, and credit recovery courses to students across the state of<br />

North Carolina. Our courses are taught by highly qualified teachers who integrate video, interactive<br />

whiteboards, wikis, and online discussion tools to engage the 21st century learner.<br />

Act now as the Summer 2011 sections are open for enrollment. Please make an appointment with your guidance<br />

counselor to discuss the approved non-EOC courses that are available to UCPS students.<br />

• Upcoming Events<br />

Spring Fling Vegas Night<br />

Join the <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> Athletic Booster Club on April 9 for our first annual Spring Fling fundraising event. The<br />

theme this year is "Vegas Night" and will feature music, auctions, Vegas-style gaming, food and fun. The event<br />

will be held from 6-11 pm at the Lawson Clubhouse. Tickets may be purchased at www.gocavs.org. If you would<br />

like to volunteer to help or to donate an item/service for the auction, please contact Lisa Piatek at<br />

Thoroughly Modern Millie<br />

The cast of Thoroughly Modern Millie has been working hard to perfect their show, and what better way to<br />

celebrate their performance weekend than with a dinner theatre experience? Join the cast of Millie and the<br />

Student Council on Friday April 8th at 6 pm for a big Chinese dinner before the musical, catered by Ming Fu.<br />

Based on the Asian elements of the show, the Chinese dinner will feature five main course options, side dishes,


drinks, dessert, and your ticket to Thoroughly Modern Millie for only $15. Dinner Theatre tickets go on sale this<br />

week, so get together a group of friends to come out and support the Drama Department and Student Council.<br />

You can buy your ticket during lunch this week or with one of the Sophomore STUCO representatives.

Senior Cavaliers<br />

Seniors don’t forget to stop by Guidance and let us know about your school decisions and any scholarships<br />

you have been awarded.<br />

The Senior Patio has been completed with the Senior bricks being laid around the border of the one of the<br />

sections of the patio. As you walk out the double doors behind the cafeteria, look to your right and you will<br />

see the bricks there. Thank you to Corey Rowley from CCR Backyard Designs and Randy Goforth for engraving<br />

the bricks and for installing them for the first graduating class from <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

North Carolina Child Support Council Scholarship<br />

CHILD SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA<br />

1. At least one parent must be a member of the North Carolina Child Support Council or a client of the Child<br />

Support Program (through either Child Support services or Clerk of Court services).<br />

2. Applicant must be a resident of North Carolina and a graduating high school senior.<br />

3. Applicant must have been accepted by a North Carolina school of higher learning: a College, University,<br />

Community College or Technical <strong>School</strong>. Applicant needs to attach a copy of the acceptance letter.<br />

4. Applicant must have maintained an overall C average or above during his/her high school career.<br />

The scholarship will be awarded by semester – 50% at the beginning of the first semester and 50% at the<br />

beginning of the second semester. Recipient must send proof of enrollment at the beginning of each semester<br />

to the Treasurer of NCCSC, Millie Bellamy, 531 Gray Fox Court SE, Leland, NC 28451. The money will be sent<br />

directly to the school you are attending. Should the recipient fail to return to school the second semester or fail<br />

to request the second semester payment by January 31, 2012, the second semester money will be forfeited.<br />

Application must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2011. Final decisions will be made no later than April<br />

30, 2011. The recipients will be recognized at the NC Child Support Conference in August 2011.<br />

Union County NC Second Amendment Scholarship Fund Guidelines<br />

Eligibility Requirements:<br />

1. Must attend <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> in Union County NC at one of the following schools: Central Academy of<br />

Technology and Arts, <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Forest Hills <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Marvin Ridge <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Monroe<br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Parkwood <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Piedmont <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Porter Ridge <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Sun Valley <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>, Union County Early College and Weddington <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

2. Must be a US Citizen<br />

3. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.<br />

4. Minimum ACT/SAT score of 950 or higher (SAT) or 25 or higher (ACT).<br />

5. <strong>High</strong> school Senior with proof of acceptance or applicant into a 4 year college/university or a 2 year<br />

community college (If student is not accepted, or has not applied, scholarship will go the runner-up.).<br />

6. Must have two letters of support/recommendation.<br />

7. Must have completed a North Carolina Hunter Safety Course.<br />

8. Must complete the written essay (500 word maximum) on the topic "The Second Amendment, the right to<br />

keep and bear arms and what it means to you" (Essay must be in APA format -<br />

http://my.ilstu.edu/~jhkahn/APAsample.pdf).<br />

Application and ALL supporting documents must arrive no later than April 23, 2011 to be eligible for<br />

scholarship for the following fall semester.<br />

Applicants are to include 5 copies of their essay with the applicant's name removed and 1 complete copy on a<br />

CD, plus a copy of their Hunter Safety Card with their application. Essays will be coded by the Committee<br />

Chairman. Copies of all essays and any additional supporting information will be forwarded to all members of<br />

the Union County NC Second Amendment Scholarship Fund Committee. Each committee member will read and<br />

score the essays/supporting information on a 1-5 ranking with 1 being best and 5 being least. Scores from each<br />

committee member will be forwarded back to the Chairman for totaling of score and matching with codes no<br />

later than 5/15/11. Winners of the scholarships will be notified via email, mail and by phone. Notification to<br />

each college or university will be sent. Final Report Paperwork for each scholarship will be sent to the NRA<br />

Foundation for future Grant Funding. An attempt will be made to place notices in local <strong>news</strong>papers for each of<br />

the scholarship winners. In addition, scholarship winners and their parents may be invited to be honored at local<br />

Friends of NRA Banquets.<br />

The North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship-<br />

The North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization established in<br />

1970 to provide scholarships for deserving students who indicate a desire to enter the profession of Accounting.<br />

The scholarship for 2011-2012 school years will be $500.00 each. The eligibility requirements for the<br />

scholarships are detailed below:<br />

1. Must be a resident of North Carolina.<br />

2. Must enroll in an accredited school of higher education in North Carolina.<br />

3. Must enroll in an accounting degree program with 6 or more credit hours per semester. (A two or four year<br />

degree program, not Master’s Degree).<br />

4. Must shoe a firm intention to continue into of Accounting.<br />

Piedmont EyeCare Student Athlete Scholarship Program -<br />

Doctors’ Scott Philippe and Michael Johnson of Piedmont EyeCare Associates, OD, PLLC are offering two financial<br />

scholarships in the amount of $500. The scholarships will be awarded to one female and one male senior<br />

student athlete that are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The students must have either applied to,<br />

or be accepted to a 2 or 4 year college.<br />

GE- Reagan Foundation Scholarship-<br />

We at GE and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation recognize your involvement and support in the success<br />

of our nation’s future leaders, and we’d like to pass along a scholarship program that we believe will provide<br />

advancement opportunities for students as they pursue higher education.<br />

In 2011, we’re proud to introduce the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarships, which will reward up to 20 students<br />

each year with $10,000 a year, for up to four years.<br />

In order to earn one of the scholarships, students must demonstrate that they exhibit the values of Ronald<br />

Reagan: leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship. In addition to providing information regarding their<br />

community leader and an academic recommendation, and write a 500-750 word essay on the following subject:<br />

2011 NC Strawberry Association Scholarship-<br />

The NC Strawberry Association is offering a 2011 NC Strawberry Association Scholarship. The scholarship is open<br />

to high school seniors or current college students applying, accepted to, or currently enrolled in a land grant<br />

university who are interested in or having declared a major in a program of study directly related to the<br />

strawberry industry (e.g. small fruit production, marketing, food science, nutrition, entomology, agronomy, etc).<br />

The Scholarship Award for 2011 is $500. The number of scholarships awarded will be based on funds available<br />

Union County/Monroe N.C. Friends of NRA Committee- Scholarship<br />

Attention Seniors, the NRA will be offering (1) $500.00 scholarship to students of UCPS. Please visit their<br />

Siler Presbyterian Scholarship-<br />

Siler Presbyterian Men of the Church is offering scholarships for young people that are interested in attending a<br />

technical school, community college or a junior college. If you are interested in pursuing this scholarship, please<br />

Weddington Optimist Club -<br />

The Weddington Optimist Club is pleased to announce that it is starting the selection process for the computer<br />

giveaway scholarship program. A <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> senior will be awarded this scholarship which<br />

includes a laptop computer with Microsoft student office software valued at over eight hundred dollars. To<br />

apply for this scholarship you must complete a cover page and write an essay (details listed below). The due<br />

date for the essay is noon April 19, 2011. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 5, 2011. Scholarship<br />

recipients must attend the Weddington Optimist Club meeting at the Weddington Optimist Park on Thursday<br />

May 26 th at 7pm.The essay should be typed (single space) with a maximum of 2 pages. A hand written essay will<br />

be acceptable if there is no access to a home or school computer/printer. Please return your completed essay to<br />

“CONTACT NAME” in guidance by the due date.<br />

Delta Kappa Gamma<br />

Each year the Alpha Zeta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators<br />

gives a one thousand dollar grant-in-aid award to a deserving student in Mecklenburg or Union Counties. This<br />

deserving student should have a sincere desire and commitment to enter the teaching profession. The ideal<br />

candidate is one who excels academically, is involved in community and school activities. The application and<br />

requested information is due by Friday, April 22 nd . Please stop by the Guidance Office to pick up your<br />

application.<br />

<strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> PTSO<br />

The <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> PTSO is proud to offer each academic year two $500 scholarships to seniors<br />

pursuing full time higher education after graduating from <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The scholarships may be<br />

revised (in quantity and amount) based on the fundraising results for the academic year.<br />

The Scholarship Committee is comprised of members representing the PTSO board, teachers and parents.<br />

Members may not have children who are seniors at CHS or teach classes with a significant representation of<br />

seniors. The decision of the committee is final and will be announced at Awards Day in May.<br />

Eligibility Requirements:<br />

- Applicant must be a senior at <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> graduating in June of the current academic year.<br />

- Minimum weighted GPA of 3.0.<br />

- Student or student’s parent/guardian must be a paid member of the CHS PTSO as of April 1 in the current<br />

- The recipient must provide evidence that the student will attend a post-secondary accredited educational<br />

institution on a full time basis after graduation. (For example: acceptance letter)<br />

- A parent or guardian of each recipient shall be required to guarantee the return of any CHS PTSO<br />

Scholarship money received if the recipient does not attend a post-secondaryaccredited educational<br />

institution during the academic year that begins in the fall immediately following his or her CHS graduation.<br />

- Application (and other materals) are due in Mrs. Hodge’s mailbox by 3p.m. April 15, 2011. Late applications<br />

- Two teacher recommendations must be submitted with the application. Each recommendation must be in a<br />

sealed envelope with the teacher’s signature over the flap.<br />

The Charlotte Observer will honor top high school seniors with the All-Star Scholars Program. These students<br />

will be featured prominently in stories and photos in the Observer in May. One scholar form each school will<br />

compete within the student’s region for a $1,000 Senior of the Year Award. Judges will consider written<br />

statements by the Senior of the Year nominees and will interview finalists for the $1, 000 award.<br />

Will to Win Scholarship<br />

This year, Merck Respiratory will again sponsor the Will to Win Scholarship Program for high school seniors with<br />

asthma who are pursing higher education.<br />

This nationwide scholarship recognizes high school seniors who are outstanding, disciplined, determined and<br />

successful in managing their asthmas. The program serves to demonstrate to young people with asthmas that<br />

the condition, when properly treated and managed, need not impede their ability to excel.<br />

Scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded to two deserving high school seniors in each of the following five<br />

categories:<br />

• Performing Arts(dance, music, theater)<br />

• Visual Arts(painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film)<br />

• Community Service<br />

• Athletics<br />

• Science<br />

All high school senior with asthmas that will graduate in 2011; have achieved a level of excellence in one of the<br />

following: performing arts, visual arts, community services, athletics or science; and who will be attending<br />

college in fall 2011 are eligible.<br />

Applicant must meet the following criteria:<br />

• Demonstrate outstanding performance in one of the above categories<br />

• Document a track record of achievements relevant to entry category.<br />

• Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0<br />

• Have received at least one award related to their entry category<br />

• Include all appropriate signatures, as noted in the application<br />

The Waxhaw Woman’s Club is offering a $500.00 scholarship to (1) <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> female. The<br />

scholarship recipient must meet the following criteria:<br />

• Have a financial need<br />

• Plans to attend a 2 or 4 year college/university<br />

• Must be a Waxhaw resident<br />

If you are interested in pursuing this scholarship, please submit a response to the following question. Please<br />

keep all essays between 250-500 words. Discuss an obstacle you have overcome in your life. What changes did<br />

you make? What did you learn? The essay response is due to Ms. Daniels by April 29 th .<br />

Georgetown’s Summer Programs for <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>s Students afford students the opportunity to get ahead and to<br />

make plans for the future while expanding their horizons and finding their passions. Each summer at<br />

Georgetown, highly motivated high school students participate in college classes and advance their academic<br />

skills through a variety of challenging learning experiences lasting from eight days to ten weeks. Students have<br />

the unique opportunity to learn from acclaimed Georgetown faculty and alumni including former and current<br />

members of Congress, well known journalists and authors, and national security leaders. Georgetown is<br />
