• “Order of the Chevalier” Induction Ceremony
The “Order of the Chevalier” is a legion of honor, for a chevalier is a French word equivalent of the English
knight. Each month, teachers send out four postcards to reward students for exceeding their expectations.
Each semester, all nominations are reviewed, and each department selects one nominee for induction.
On Friday, May 27, we had the pleasure of honoring the following students:
CTE Department: Shannon Hendel
English Department: Corey Shea
Fine Arts Department: Angelica Beverly
Individual Academics: Sean Hogan
Math Department: Brittany McFarland
PE Department: Peter Hendel
Science Department: Ava Maritato
Social Studies Department: Devin Johnson
World Languages Department: Tristen Taylor
In addition to inducting nine students in the “Order of the Chevalier,” we also inducted CTE Teacher Pat Cooper,
Art Teacher David Malady, and parent volunteer Agnes McAleer.
All inductees were honored at a PTSO-sponsored breakfast and were awarded certificates. Students were
awarded engraved keychains, while Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Malady, and Mrs. McAleer were awarded engraved
paperweights.
• Proctors Needed
CHS will administer EOC exams June 7-10. Exams begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at approximately noon. In order to
administer these exams we are in need of proctors. If you are available to volunteer your time, please contact
Elenia Daniels in the Guidance Department. A proctor's training session will be offered Thursday, June 2, 3:00-
3:30 pm in the Media Center. If you are unable to attend this training session, a make-up session will be held on
Friday, June 3, from 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the Guidance Suite. Please remember that proctor's training is mandatory
and required for every North Carolina Testing Program.
• Attendance Waiver and Recovery
Any student who has 8 or more absences in any class must go through the waiver/recovery process.
• Per UCPS policy:
• “Credit will not be granted for classes when absences for a student reach eight days for a semester
long course and 15 days for a year long course.”
• “Written documentation for an absence must be presented within three school days after the
student returns to school; otherwise, the absence(s) will be recorded as unlawful.”
• Students must be academically passing a class in order to go through the waiver and recovery process.
• A student may be allowed to recover up to 8 class absences, with a maximum number of 3 recovered
absences per class.
• All waivers will be evaluated by the attendance committee. During the week of 5/16, any student who
submitted a waiver will need to meet with Mrs. Rutowski (Attendance Counselor) to learn how much
recovery time they will need to serve.
• Recovery sessions will be offered in the media center during the following times:
Tuesday, May 31 – Friday, June 3, daily sessions from 7:25am – 7:55am and 3:00pm – 4:00pm
• ALL RECOVERY MUST BE COMPLETED BY FRIDAY, JUNE 3!
Students may see Mrs. Rutowski for their attendance information any day BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL OR
DURING LUNCH, or email michelle.rutowski@ucps.k12.nc.us.
Waiver and recovery is the STUDENT’S responsibility – make sure you take care of it!
Cuthbertson High School
2011-2012 Summer Reading Information
The English Department of Cuthbertson High School is excited about our 2011-2012 summer reading program, which we believe will
help students find enjoyment in reading. It is through that enjoyment that students will not only better understand literature, but they will
also form a lasting relationship with literacy and learning. Through our summer reading program, we want to celebrate diversity and
appeal to and meet the needs of an entire student body. It is in that recognition of and respect for individual tastes, abilities, and
interests that we have created reading guidelines that will allow students freedom of choice in their summer reading.
Instead of assigning a specific book to read, students will have the freedom to select a book of choice as their summer reading text for
the 2011-2012 school year. The criteria for selecting a book is as follows:
• Rising ninth graders will read a non-fiction book of their choice.
• Rising tenth graders will read a novel from a world author as they study World Literature in English II.
• Rising eleventh graders will read a novel from an American author as they study American Literature in English III.
• Rising twelfth will read a novel from a British author as they study British Literature in English IV.
Over the summer, students should read their selected text, which will help prepare them for the instruction and assessment that will
occur during the first two weeks when the student is enrolled in English.
In the “Students” – “Summer Reading” section on the Cuthbertson High School website, please go to the following links for more
information about our summer reading program:
• Parent/Student Letter: This letter provides a detailed overview of our summer reading program.
• Quick Reference Guide: This document provides an overview of the criteria for each grade level, as well as useful links and
guided reading questions that could help students when reading the novel.
• Summer Reading Rubric: This rubric details how students will be assessed on their summer reading presentation during
English class. While students will be instructed on all parts of the presentation during the first two weeks of English class,
understanding the criteria might be useful when selecting a book to read.
If you cannot access these documents online, hard copies are available in the main office at Cuthbertson High School.
Also, because we want parents to be informed of the book their son/daughter is reading, we encourage parents and students to review
the criteria and choose the summer reading book together. To ensure the greatest enjoyment and success possible, we also
encourage parents and students to talk extensively about the reading selection.
For questions about the summer reading program, please join us on Facebook (CHS Summer Reading) or e-mail us at
CHSSummerReading@gmail.com.
