Catalyst Conference
Every year, the Catalyst Conference brings a selected group of 80 high school students from across North Carolina to
UNC-CH for a weekend-long exploration of social justice issues affecting both America and the larger world. Through
leadership and personal development sessions, we aim to empower participants so they can serve as catalysts for
positive change in their own communities. The Catalyst Conference serves a vital need, as encouraging today’s youth to
take an interest in national and worldly issues is vital to securing an educated and passionate group of future leaders.
These 80 students will face a challenging task; they will be asked to view the world through the eyes of another and
come to a realization of the underlying similarities that connect us all.
Catalyst Conference 2012 seeks to:
• Give high school students the opportunity to build and learn from personal relationships that transcend racial,
ethnic, religious, and gender boundaries.
• Provide an open forum for discussion of community issues of social justice and equality through a series of
workshops to educate students about diversity and social issues.
• Empower students to combat the apathy and ignorance threatening the future of America’s youth through
personal development sessions and leadership training.
• Create a network of peer support between high school students and college Catalyst Conference counselors.
• Transform our high school students into catalysts for positive social change and generate a vision of social
harmony for the 21st century and beyond.
The Catalyst Conference is a great learning experience for developing high school students. The conference will take
place on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill on February 24-26, 2012. A $35 registration fee is required upon acceptance
(DO NOT include this with the application) to the conference, which helps to offset the cost of housing and food for the
entire weekend. As we do not wish to exclude those with financial need, if you have an interested student who may not
be financially able to pay the entrance fee, please notify us separately and we may be able to offer a scholarship. Only
high school students in grades 9-11 are eligible for application. No seniors or students who have previously attended
will be accepted. Applications must arrive at UNC-CH, or be submitted via email, by Monday, November 7, 2011.
Youth Exchange Scholarships for U.S. High School Students
The U.S. Department of State announces scholarships for American high school students to study abroad:
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) offers merit-based scholarships to U. S. high-school aged
students for overseas study of seven critical foreign languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian
(Tajik), Russian and Turkish. The NSLI-Y program is designed to immerse participants in the cultural life of the host
country, giving them invaluable formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign
languages and cultures. Applications for summer 2012 and academic year 2012-2013 programs are due November 3,
2011. Visit www.nsliforyouth.org for more information.
The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program offers scholarships to American high school
students to spend a semester or an academic year in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Mali, Morocco, Oman, Thailand, and Turkey. This post 9/11 program focuses on increasing understanding between
people in the U.S. and countries with significant Muslim populations. The application deadline is January 11, 2012. Visit
the YES Program’s website for more information.
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) was established in 1983 to celebrate German-American
friendship based on common values of democracy. Secondary school students live with host families, attend local
schools, and participate in community life in Germany. Young professionals (undergraduates) and high-school graduates
of vocational studies ages 18-24 study and participate in practical training. Scholarships are now available for academic
year 2012-13. Prior German language skills are not required. For more information visit USAGermanyScholarship.org.
The American Youth Leadership Program offers opportunities for American high students and educators to travel
abroad on a three- to four-week-long exchange program to gain first-hand knowledge of foreign cultures and to
collaborate on solving global issues. Several different organizations implement this program, and each has organized an
academic and experiential educational exchange focused on dialogue and debate, leadership development, and
community service. Recruitment areas and application deadlines vary, so please check the American Youth Leadership
Program website for more information.
Cultural Vistas (formerly AIPT-CDS), in partnership with the US Department of State,
announces that the American Youth Leadership Program's Japan America
Watershed Stewardship program is now accepting candidates for its 2012 summer
program! The program's goal is to develop a corps of individuals (both high school students and educators) who are
exposed to the people and culture of Japan, and trained to pass on their knowledge to others in their schools and
communities.
The program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs,
which will cover:
• The cost of travel to the pre-departure orientation (June 23, 2012); lodging, meals, local transportation, and
program activities during the pre-departure orientation;
• International round-trip air travel to Japan (June 26 - July 19, 2012);
• Health and accident insurance; and
• Lodging in Japan, in-country transportation, most meals, all program activities.
least 15 years of age and no older than 17 at the beginning of the exchange (June 23, 2012) and have at least one
semester of high school left to complete after the exchange. All participants must be U.S. citizens. The application
deadline is Monday, November 28, 2011.
Though this application is free to all who wish to apply, there will be a $200 deposit required at the time of acceptance
into the program ($100 of the deposit will be refunded to the participant upon the successful completion of the
program). For more information please visit the AYLP: JAWS website at
http://culturalvistas.org/jaws2012/index.htm. All applications will be submitted online.
