• Driver’s Education<br />

Effective immediately, Driver Education classes will be resumed in <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong>s. The next class<br />

will begin on June 21, 2010 and run through July 1, 2010. There will be no Friday classes. The Behind-the-Wheel<br />

portion may begin on July 6, 2010. Please inform your students and begin your registration process<br />

remembering we begin with the oldest available students. Summer class times will be held from 8:00 a.m. to<br />

12:00 p.m. Our next classroom sessions will begin on July 12, 2010 and run through July 22, 2010; and August 2,<br />

2010 through August 12, 2010.<br />

• Sports<br />

- Spring Sports Awards Ceremony<br />

The Spring Sports Awards Ceremony will be Thursday, May 20 th at 7:00pm in the auditorium.<br />

- New Girl’s Basketball Coach<br />

<strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> is pleased to announce the<br />

selection of Mr. Joel Allen as the new Varsity Girls<br />

Basketball Head Coach. Mr. Allen is a Social Studies<br />

teacher, Assistant Football Coach and Head Boys<br />

Golf Coach at <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Previously he has served as a teacher and a coach at<br />

Weddington HS and Buford HS in SC. Coach Allen served<br />

as the Head Boys Basketball Coach from 2003-2007 at<br />

Buford <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Under his guidance, the Buford HS<br />

Boys Basketball Team made the 2004 and 2005 SC State<br />

Playoffs and were the SC Region III-A Champions in 2005. Coach Allen was named SC Region III-A Coach of<br />

the Year in 2005 and was the 2006 Lancaster News Coach of the Year.<br />

Athletic Director, Coach David Malady said, “We are excited to have a proven winner, a man of great<br />

integrity, and a positive role model leading our program. We believe we have found that in Coach Allen. We<br />

are confident that with Coach Allen’s guidance, our girls’ basketball program will rise to the task of<br />

competing at the high levels required with such strong programs in the Rocky River Conference.<br />

- Track<br />

The Lady Cavaliers track team finished 20th in the state meet this past Saturday out of 42 teams who earned<br />

the right to compete in the State Championships and that scored points. Leading the way was Valerie Afam,<br />

who finished 5th in the triple jump. Justine Neville finished 6th in the 100 meter hurdles. Hannah Sjoberg<br />

brought home an 8th place finish in the pole vault, as did Rachel Miller in the 1600 meter run.<br />

Congratulations ladies on an outstanding first season. We look forward to next year!<br />

- Free Sports Physicals<br />

Presbyterian will be providing FREE sport physicals for high school students on Saturday, May 22 nd at<br />

Monroe <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. You must complete the Sports Participation Physical Evaluation Form and bring it with<br />

you. <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> is assigned a time which is 1:45pm.<br />

• Volunteers Needed<br />

We are in need of approximately 50 parent volunteers to help proctor End of Course (EOC) tests June 7-10.<br />

Volunteers would need to report to the school at 7:45 and would be finished no later than 12:30. All proctors<br />

would also need to attend training on Thursday, June 3 from 3:00-3:30 or Friday, June 4 from 7:15-7:45. If you<br />

are willing to volunteer for EOC testing, please contact Elenia Daniels at Elenia.daniels@ucps.k12.nc.us.<br />

• 2010-2011 Parking Information<br />

Student parking permits for the 2010-2011 school year will be available beginning Monday, May 24 th for rising<br />

seniors and Tuesday, June 1 st for all other students. Parking permits will be sold in the front office during all<br />

lunches through Friday, June 4 th .<br />

Students must bring the following items to apply for parking permits.<br />

• Completed Parking Permit Application and the RU Buckled <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Privilege Agreement with student<br />

and parent/guardian signatures.<br />

• Valid driver’s license (will copy at school)<br />

• Vehicle registration & proof of insurance for EACH vehicle being registered (will copy at school)<br />

• Cash or check in the amount of $25.00. Checks should be made payable to <strong>Cuthbertson</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

The Parking Permit Application and the RU Buckled <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Privilege Agreement can be downloaded from<br />

this web page or are available in the front office.<br />

• 2 nd Semester Exam Schedule<br />

Second semester exams begin on Monday, June 7 and end on Thursday, June 10. Scores on these exams count<br />

25% of the final semester grade. With the exception of State mandated End-of-Course (EOC) and IMS exams,<br />

students may be exempt from semester exams in a class if the student maintains an “A” average in the class and<br />

has no more than three (3) absences during the semester. Review periods have been built in the schedule.<br />

Students are required to attend the review sessions for all End-of-Course (EOC) and IMS exams. However, if a<br />

student has an A or B average in a non-EOC or non-IMS class, the review period becomes optional.<br />

To provide students with additional opportunities to review and prepare for EOC courses, we will be hosting<br />

optional EOC Blitzes prior to the beginning of exams. These sessions will run from 3:00-4:30 on the following<br />

days:<br />

Progress Reports will go home on Monday, May 17 th .<br />

- CHS Spring Fling<br />

The CHS Spring Fling will take place on Friday, May 21 st . The Student Council and the Yearbook staff will be<br />

sponsoring the event. The event will take place after lunch and will cost $2.00 to attend. The proceeds will<br />

go towards a school beautification project sponsored by Student Council.<br />

- CFNC<br />

College Foundation of North Carolina is a nonprofit partnership which provides a broad expertise in helping<br />

students to prepare successfully for college and to find the best financial aid alternatives. This site is a<br />

complete and comprehensive source of information <strong>–</strong> and real solutions <strong>–</strong> for students and their families. In<br />

an effort to ensure that all students have access to learn more about college and career planning, we highly<br />

recommend for students to set up an account through CFCNC.org. Check out the CHS Career Center for<br />

more information on college and career planning and how to set up your own account.<br />

• Summer Opportunities<br />

There are several opportunities that students can participate in over the summer. All of these opportunities<br />

and others that will be coming in are posted on the website under the Guidance Department link and under<br />

“Summer Opportunities”.<br />

UCPS Mandarin Chinese Language Camp<br />

UCPS is very excited to offer the first UCPS Mandarin Chinese Language Camp. This camp will<br />

run June 14 through June 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Marvin Ridge <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Students may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. The camp is offered to all UCPS rising 7 th<br />

graders through graduating seniors. The goal of this camp is to introduce and further the<br />

Chinese language skills and Chinese cultural knowledge of all attending students. The camp cost<br />

is $20 per camper. Scholarships are available for those students with financial need. The<br />

deadline to apply is May 14 th . Information and registration form for this camp is posted on the<br />
