Gliders on the <strong>Goulburn</strong><br />

7 – 8.30pm, Saturday 6 th September<br />

A spotlight walk along the <strong>Goulburn</strong> River in<br />

Seymour. Possums and gliders live in the big<br />

red gums along the river. During the day, they<br />

sleep in tree hollows, but emerge at night to<br />

look for their breakfast. Breakfast can include<br />

the sap of the wattles along the river bank, and<br />

we often see the little Sugar Gliders soaring<br />

between trees to reach the best waterfront<br />

cafes. Koalas also live along the riverbank, and<br />

will be enjoying their breakfast of eucalypt<br />

leaves during our stroll.<br />

Meeting point: Lions Park/New Crossing Place<br />

Park, Seymour. Turn in past the Royal Hotel,<br />

Emily Street and meet at the boat ramp.<br />

Join one of <strong>Victoria</strong>’s leading herpetologists, Peter Robertson, in the<br />

hunt to find this elusive lizard. Past volunteer surveys of this kind have<br />

increased the known population of the Striped Legless Lizard<br />

Seymour Bushland Park – Nest Box Installation Day<br />

9.30am, Saturday 20 th September<br />

Do you enjoy the outdoors? Do you like to meet new people? Do you want to help<br />

endagered native animals? Then come along to the Seymour Bushland Park and<br />

help us put nest boxes in the trees for animals not fortunate enough to find a<br />

suitable nesting hollow. The Seymour Men’s Shed and students from Seymour<br />

Technical High School have built some wonderful nest boxes. We ar enow ready<br />

to install them. A BBQ lunch will be provided for all volunteers on the day. Just bring a hat,<br />

sunscreen, suitable shoes and lots of enthusiasm.<br />

Join us on a Native Grassland extravaganza. We'll be up close and personal, identifying dozens<br />

Broadford Environmental Reserves Committee of <strong>Management</strong> will be holding a wildflower walk at the<br />

Colin Officer Flora Reserve on Sunday, Sept 14 at 10am.<br />

Meeting place will be the Broadford Golf Club car park. Contact person is Barbara Moss, 0428 311 553<br />

The reserve has been set in the past couple of years. The local shire is in the process of having the reserve<br />

covenanted through Trust For Nature. The high value conservation area has been fenced off in the past 12<br />

months to protect the flora. There is a great wildflower display during Spring.<br />

Spring into Nature at Earlston Woodland<br />

Walk and talk at the Trust owned Earlston woodland property north of Violet Town. Recent<br />

management activities and funding sources of the 146ha property will be discussed by Trust staff.<br />

<strong>Management</strong> activities to date include mistletoe removal, native herbivore plot exclosure fencing,<br />

rabbit harbour destruction, erosion control, rabbit warren ripping, and direct seeding trials. Future<br />

management strategies will also be discussed.<br />

FOXPO EXPO 2008<br />

The Warby Range Landcare Group invites you to an<br />

information evening with Charles Sturt University’s<br />

Fox PhD student Andrew Carter. Andrew has just<br />

completed 14 months of gruelling (and tiring!) field work in tracking<br />

and monitoring the movements and habits of foxes.<br />

What he has learned will smash some of the traditional myths of fox territories,<br />

movements and bait-taking habits, which will help landholders establish a more<br />

effective baiting program.<br />

Native Vegetation and Biodiversity on your Farm<br />

Short description: From the catchment perspective, to local landscapes and on<br />

your property this workshop will look at biodiversity and native vegetation in<br />

then head outdoors for a farm walk. Find out why biodiversity is important,<br />

what plants and animals are in the local area and how to protect, enhance and<br />

establish native vegetation on your property.<br />

‘Golden Sun Moths’ – A short life<br />

The lives of these endangered animals will be discussed by a number of<br />

presenters who are passionate about the conservation and management of this<br />

unique species (particularly relevant for locals who live near Mt. Piper Nature<br />

Conservation Reserve).<br />

The session will also include an on-screen premiere of a Melbourne University<br />

‘mini-documentary’ and launch of new community produced education<br />

material. Learn about the lifecycle of the animal, its conservation and<br />

management and how locals in the Broadford area can be involved in the ‘2008<br />

Golden Sun Moth Volunteer Monitoring Program’.<br />

This is a must for locals or anyone who has ever been curious about this rarely seen animal.<br />

‘Where are…..the Barkers?’<br />

Wooragee Landcare Group invites you to their DVD launch<br />

Entertaining and educational, this short docudrama features the<br />

‘endangered’ Barking Owls of the <strong>North</strong> East.<br />

In this film we meet Betty, a Barking Owl, wildlife ecologist Dr<br />

Natasha Schedvin and local residents of the Chiltern-Mt Pilot<br />

National Park area near Beechworth and Chiltern. Join them and<br />

discover more about the fascinating Barkers. Betty shares with us<br />

some of the significant events of her life’s story – finding a mate,<br />

raising a family – the dangers that are always lurking in the bush.<br />

Betty and her partner Todd survive the disastrous wildfire of<br />

2003 but Betty’s life is changed forever.<br />

What lessons can we learn about managing the land for future generations of Barkers?<br />

This short film is based on the research of PhD student Dr Natasha Schedvin who will be our special<br />

guest on the night and happy to answer your questions.<br />

Beyond the Bridges<br />

Hosted by Warrenbayne/Boho Landcare Group and DPI Benalla.<br />

Come along to hear the latest findings on the research undertaken around the Fauna<br />

Bridges and gliding poles over the Hume Hwy. Scientists involved in this research will<br />

give an evening presentation on why the bridges and poles were needed, what animals<br />

are in the area and what animals are using the bridges. During a morning excursion, you<br />

can learn how the images are downloaded from the cameras on the bridges, how the<br />

location of the bridges was decided and what landholders can do to help.<br />
