You need to make your points clearly and concisely, engage your listeners, and sell your ideas. Designed for non-native English speaking professionals who want to close the communication skills gap between themselves and native speakers, this course enables participants to develop a relaxed and personable, yet professional style; gain confidence using appropriate idioms; employ speaking techniques beyond just words to convey your message; build an arsenal of survival language to avoid being nonplussed; and practice effective techniques for handling Q & A. Impromptu speaking activities and formal presentations will also be covered. Laura Demchuck Ms. Demchuck coaches professionals in the areas of accent reduction, interview techniques, and executive communication skills. Her background includes extensive international teaching for multinational corporations. She is also an instructor for the English Language Institute at the University of Chicago’s International House. Course Code WSEEPS Section 12S1 Spring 2012 Gleacher Center $295 Mondays March 19–April 9 6–8:30 pm Teacher Recertification CPDUs: 10 Professional Communication for Non-Native English Speakers No matter how knowledgeable and experienced non-native speakers of English may be in their professions, they can still face special challenges in situations such as expressing opinions, exchanging information, comparing differing views, and negotiating agreements. This lunchtime course will provide guided practice in these areas, as well as address how to employ appropriate vocabulary, speak clearly, and listen effectively. All students will receive an assessment of their specific difficulties and suggestions for remedying them. The course concludes with an opportunity to rehearse your skills in a simulated professional gathering. Students must provide their own lunches for all sessions except the last. Kathleen Maguire Ms. Maguire has many years of experience as an ESL instructor in both professional and academic settings, most recently as a professor in the Department of Language and Liberal Studies at Fanshawe College in Canada. She is also an instructor for the English Language Institute at the University of Chicago’s International House. The best investment you can make in yourself and your writing is to spend some time inside the Writer’s Studio. The Writer’s Studio Has Two Types of Courses Open courses, listed in this catalog, do not have an admission process. They provide a supportive and challenging environment for writers at every level, whether you have a project already underway or are just getting started as a writer. You can enroll as your needs and schedule dictate, exploring a particular genre, building specific skills, or learning how to get your work published.
