Interfaith Dialogues: Justin’s
Dialogue with Trypho and
Halevi’s Book of the Khazars
In the Abrahamic traditions the
dialogue form has often been used
as a vehicle to argue the superiority
of one faith over one or more others.
In this course we will consider,
compare, and contrast two such
works: Justin’s Dialogue with
Trypho, an early Christian work in
which a Christian and a Jew discuss
the relative merits of their religions,
and Judah Halevi’s Book of the
Khazars, a medieval Jewish work in
which a pagan king converses with a
philosopher, a Christian, a Muslim,
and a Jew in order to select the
proper religion for his conversion.
Readings in Buddhism:
Selections from the Flower
Garland Sutra
The Flower Garland Sutra, in
Sanskrit the Avatamsaka Sutra,
is one of the foundational texts of
Mahayana Buddhism. It is a collection
of writings, arranged in 40
chapters, many of which were previously
independent, which elaborate
on and explore the interdependency
and interpenetration of all things
and the path to understanding and
enlightenment. We will read and
discuss several of the more important
and influential chapters. While
prior knowledge of Buddhism is not
required, some basic familiarity
with the core teachings and stories
would be helpful.
