For safety reasons: be sure to pack
your baggage correctly
For Zurich Airport as well as for all airlines, security on
the ground and in the air is of the highest priority. Security
standards are based on the relevant international
regulations.
Please make sure your baggage does not contain any prohibited
items. The regulations published by the Federal Office of Civil
Aviation www.bazl.admin.ch apply to both hold baggage and
hand baggage. Please contact the relevant airline if you have
any queries.
Hand baggage must not contain any items that could be used
as weapons and are included in the relevant Federal Office of
Civil Aviation list. Baggage must not contain any combustibles
or products that generate fumes. Devices that generate heat
(e.g. diver’s lamps) are only permitted in hand baggage, and
must be disconnected from their power source (e.g. batteries).
Explosive and highly flammable substances
Any substances that represent an explosion risk (e.g. gases,
liquid and solid flammable substances, reactive materials and
oxidising agents, peroxides, corrosive substances, highly flammable
liquids such as paraffin, lamp oil, lighter fuel, petrol, fuel
paste, etc.) are prohibited in both hold and hand baggage.
2
Chemicals and poisonous substances
Any substances that may cause fire, corrosion or the generation
of poisonous gases are prohibited in both hold and hand
baggage. These include paints, varnishes, acids, alkalis, chemical-based
household products, poisonous substances and
poten tially infectious substances, radioactive materials, pepper
sprays and other sprays that could be used for self-defence, etc.
Firearms/ammunition
Firearms and imitation firearms are not permitted in hand baggage,
but can be carried as hold baggage provided this complies
with Swiss regulations, the regulations applicable in the destination
country and the regulations of the airline concerned.
Sharp implements
Objects that could be used as weapons (e.g. knives, penknives,
scissors, nail files and knitting needles) are not permitted in
hand baggage, but can be carried as hold baggage provided this
complies with Swiss regulations and the regulations applicable
in the destination country.
Blunt instruments
Any objects that could be used to cause injury (such as sports
equipment, baseball and cricket bats, etc.), or blunt tools such
as hammers, chisels or screwdrivers must be transported as
hold baggage. These objects must be packed in such a way that
they cannot cause any damage or injure anyone during transit.
3

4
Prohibited:
These items must
not be carried either
as hand baggage
or hold baggage
(selec tion only).
Liquids in hand baggage
The European Union (EU) regulations concerning liquids in
hand baggage also apply in Switzerland to passengers who are
departing from Switzerland or are passing through the country
in transit.
Only containers holding a maximum of 100 ml (1 dl) are
permitted in hand baggage (liquids, gels, creams, etc.)
• The containers (tubes, tubs, bottles) must
fit comfortably into a transparent, re-sealable
plastic bag (e.g. a freezer bag) up to one
litre in capacity.
• The plastic bag must be presented for
examination at the airport security check.
• One plastic bag is allowed per person. This
also applies to children and infants.
The following are excluded from this restriction:
• Prescription medicines in liquid form. Passengers may take as
much of these on board with them as required for the entire
journey. Please have your medical certificate with you.
• Over-the-counter medicines (nasal sprays, contact lens cleaning
solution, etc.) may also be taken on the plane with you (as
much as required for the journey).
• Baby food – as much as required for the journey.
Duty-free articles may still be purchased in quantities greater
than 100 ml. These will be sealed in a plastic bag in-store.
Please observe the safety regulations on page 19.
Specific restrictions apply to certain items carried in hold baggage.
If in doubt, please contact your airline.
Special regulations apply to some passengers travelling to the
US (www.tsa.gov) and to countries outside the EU.
Please note the following important information concerning
hand baggage:
• Do not carry more than you really need in your hand baggage.
• Any permitted liquids that you buy prior to check-in should be
packed in your hold baggage.
