Steve faced loss at an incredibly young age.
He had grown up with his father, a disabled Vietnam
veteran, because his mother had spent most of Steve’s
childhood in prison. When his father was diagnosed with
terminal cancer, Steve came to Glenwood because his father
feared he wouldn’t be able to provide the supervision Steve
needed to keep him out of their neighborhood’s gangs. But
shortly after he came to Glenwood, Steve’s father died, leaving
him in the care of his grandmother and uncle.
Understandably, Steve was filled with bitterness. But with the
help of Glenwood’s caring staff, Steve has become a hardworking
student leader. At Camp Getschow last year, he received
the Buckeye Award, which is given to the camper who
demonstrates leadership and excellence. Now a freshman a St.
Edward’s High School, Steve has also become Batallion
Commander, the highest rank in Glenwood’s military program.
Glenwood’s comprehensive life-skills program helps students
like Steve achieve their full potential. Some of our programs
include athletics, band, choir, military program, drumline and
KidShop, Glenwood’s woodworking studio. Counseling and
mentoring also give students the chance to overcome the family
and community struggles they have faced. Glenwood’s summer
program and Camp Getschow also allows students to participate
in recreational activities in a fun-filled learning environment.

their talents and reach for their goals.
