For Ricky, things have always been challenging.
He struggled in school despite constant attention from
special education teachers. He went to the hospital often due
to his mother’s substance abuse while she was pregnant. And his
father was nowhere to be found. Although Ricky’s mother quit
using drugs and alcohol to create a healthy environment for Ricky,
her declining health made it more difficult for her to take care of
him. She turned to Glenwood for help.
Glenwood’s caring staff provided Ricky with the support he
needed. Special one-on-one attention from Glenwood’s resource
teachers helped Ricky gain two grade levels last year. Most
significantly, Ricky’s attitude has changed. Instead of proclaiming
that he hates school, he is confident in his abilities and is excited
to tackle new challenges.
Upon entering Glenwood, 60 to 70 percent of students are two
to three years below their grade level. Ricky is just one example
of how Glenwood’s small classes and individualized instruction
through the Frankel Learning Resource Center can help students
achieve academic success. Students who graduate from
Glenwood’s grade school program have the opportunity to stay
at Glenwood while attending a local public high school or an
outstanding private high school if the student has excelled
academically. During the last ten years, this highly successful
program has helped almost 100 percent of Glenwood’s high
school graduates go on to college or the military.
