Meet 

RickyGrade 

5

For Ricky, things have always been challenging. 

He struggled in school despite constant attention from 

special education teachers. He went to the hospital often due 

to his mother’s substance abuse while she was pregnant. And his 

father was nowhere to be found. Although Ricky’s mother quit 

using drugs and alcohol to create a healthy environment for Ricky, 

her declining health made it more difficult for her to take care of 

him. She turned to Glenwood for help. 

Glenwood’s caring staff provided Ricky with the support he 

needed. Special one-on-one attention from Glenwood’s resource 

teachers helped Ricky gain two grade levels last year. Most 

significantly, Ricky’s attitude has changed. Instead of proclaiming 

that he hates school, he is confident in his abilities and is excited 

to tackle new challenges. 

Upon entering Glenwood, 60 to 70 percent of students are two 

to three years below their grade level. Ricky is just one example 

of how Glenwood’s small classes and individualized instruction 

through the Frankel Learning Resource Center can help students 

achieve academic success. Students who graduate from 

Glenwood’s grade school program have the opportunity to stay 

at Glenwood while attending a local public high school or an 

outstanding private high school if the student has excelled 

academically. During the last ten years, this highly successful 

program has helped almost 100 percent of Glenwood’s high 

school graduates go on to college or the military. 

Glenwood’s dedication to academic success 

helps students reach their full potential in 

the classroom and every day life.

Meet 

Gizelle 

Grade 2

Gizelle isn’t used to playing outside. 

Her mother worries that it isn’t safe, so her children 

must stay inside to play. Gizelle’s previous home was 

robbed numerous times; and even though her family just 

moved again, their new neighborhood still isn’t fit for young 

children. Since Gizelle’s father was incarcerated, she lives with 

her mother and two older brothers. Gizelle’s mother has a 

chronic debilitating illness, which has made her unable to work 

and care for her children as she would like. Gizelle’s mother 

wanted her daughter to be in a safer environment and get the 

attention she needed. Glenwood was just the answer she was 

looking for. 

Gizelle’s older brother, Julian, has thrived in Glenwood’s 

positive environment, and now Gizelle has followed in her 

brother’s footsteps. Glenwood’s residential program allows 

children like Gizelle to live on campus during the week in a 

cottage with eleven other children and two dedicated 

houseparents. Houseparents serve as positive role models for 

the children and help instill the integrity, values and confidence 

children need. Glenwood’s program complements the skills 

and resources of the parents and allows the children to return 

home every weekend. 

Glenwood’s dedicated houseparents provide 

an extended sense of family and allow 

students to live on campus in a stable and 

positive environment.

Meet 

Steve 

Grade 9

Steve faced loss at an incredibly young age. 

He had grown up with his father, a disabled Vietnam 

veteran, because his mother had spent most of Steve’s 

childhood in prison. When his father was diagnosed with 

terminal cancer, Steve came to Glenwood because his father 

feared he wouldn’t be able to provide the supervision Steve 

needed to keep him out of their neighborhood’s gangs. But 

shortly after he came to Glenwood, Steve’s father died, leaving 

him in the care of his grandmother and uncle. 

Understandably, Steve was filled with bitterness. But with the 

help of Glenwood’s caring staff, Steve has become a hardworking 

student leader. At Camp Getschow last year, he received 

the Buckeye Award, which is given to the camper who 

demonstrates leadership and excellence. Now a freshman a St. 

Edward’s High School, Steve has also become Batallion 

Commander, the highest rank in Glenwood’s military program. 

Glenwood’s comprehensive life-skills program helps students 

like Steve achieve their full potential. Some of our programs 

include athletics, band, choir, military program, drumline and 

KidShop, Glenwood’s woodworking studio. Counseling and 

mentoring also give students the chance to overcome the family 

and community struggles they have faced. Glenwood’s summer 

program and Camp Getschow also allows students to participate 

in recreational activities in a fun-filled learning environment. 

Glenwood’s year-round programs meet the 

essential developmental and educational needs 

of children, while helping children discover 

their talents and reach for their goals.

To build bridges to brighter futures for 

Chicago’s children in need. 

Who We Are 

Glenwood School for Boys and Girls is a 

community supported non-profit 

organization that helps Chicago’s 

disadvantaged children overcome difficult 

family and community circumstances to 

achieve a better life and future. 

Who We Serve 

With campuses in Glenwood and St. 

Charles, Illinois, Glenwood annually serves 

approximately 300 at-risk children, ages 7 

to 17, whose lives and futures have been 

threatened by family and community issues 

such as death, divorce, drugs, gangs and 

poverty. The children we serve come from 

more than 60 communities in Chicago and 

Northwest Indiana. 

What We Offer Children 

in Need 

1. Individualized academic instruction 

Glenwood’s students attend an on-campus 

accredited school that provides small 

classes and individualized learning 

resources for students. 

2. Caring, family-like community 

During the week, children live in cottages 

with houseparents dedicated to providing a 

positive, nurturing and family-focused 

environment. 

3. Effective life-skills programs 

Glenwood’s leadership and character 

building programs meet the children’s 

essential developmental and educational 

needs, while helping them discover their 

talents and interests. 

4. Essential childhood needs 

Glenwood fills a child’s basic needs – food, 

clothing, housing, medical and dental care 

– 24 hours a day, five days a week.

Why We’re Unique 

We focus on prevention. 

Students come to Glenwood between the 

ages of 7 and 12, before serious problems 

interfere with their child development. 

Unlike other child welfare programs, our 

goal is to help our students achieve 

academic and developmental progress 

before returning them home when their 

family is ready for independence. 

We partner with parents. 

At Glenwood, we work closely with parents 

and guardians who are struggling to care 

and provide for their children by 

complementing their strengths, skills and 

resources. Glenwood helps the whole 

family by providing services for both boys 

and girls, while partnering with the parents 

to achieve a stable and positive 

environment allowing the children to 

return home every weekend. 

We are cost-effective. 

Glenwood must raise only $15,000 per 

year to provide life-changing programs for 

one child, which is significantly less than 

residential treatment centers or foster care 

programs that cost nearly $100,000 a year. 

We have a legacy of success. 

Since 1887, Glenwood has helped more 

than 18,000 at-risk children in Chicago 

accomplish their goals and dreams. 

Our Results 

Strong children. 

Glenwood’s unique and effective program 

gives children the tools they need to 

overcome the obstacles they have faced and 

one day become caring parents, 

dependable workers and responsible 

members of their communities. 

Strong families. 

Parents and guardians undergoing hardship 

have the chance to get back on their feet 

while their children are at Glenwood. 

Typically, within two to three years, parents 

have created a positive, healthy and stable 

environment that allows their children to 

return home. 

Strong communities. 

On a larger level, Glenwood has filled 

thousands of children and their families 

with hope and promise, allowing them to 

rise above generational poverty, drugs 

and violence.

Message from the Chairman 

and President 

Each and every year, we at Glenwood School for Boys and 

Girls work hard to fulfill our mission of building bridges to 

brighter futures for children in need. However, as a 

community supported organization, our goals cannot be 

reached without the kindness and generosity of friends like 

you. Thanks to your support, Glenwood has been able to 

send girls to camp for the first time, offer more 

extracurricular activities and continue providing learning 

resources year-round. 

In 2004, we launched our Bridge Builder Campaign to 

increase the size and strength of our community support. The Irwin Family 

Foundation stepped up to provide a challenge grant that matched $1 for every $2 

raised during 2004 and 2005, making your dollars go even further. Since starting this 

campaign, we have exceeded our fundraising goals and our level of community 

participation continues to grow. With ongoing help from our partners, we will 

continue to provide life-changing opportunities for Chicago’s disadvantaged youth. 

At Glenwood, we go beyond providing an education or simply a place for children to 

stay during the week. Glenwood is a place where caring teachers, houseparents and 

staff members help children overcome the incredible obstacles they’ve faced to reach 

their full potential. We provide a positive environment where kids live, learn and 

grow. We help children discover their talents and gifts. We give kids the tools they 

need to succeed in life and achieve things they never thought possible. Because of 

Glenwood, our students have a better chance at life. 

We are able to accomplish great things at Glenwood because of the kindness of 

individuals, businesses and foundations who believe in the work that we do. Thank

Glenwood’s generous Child Sponsors make it possible for a 

disadvantaged child from the region to have a chance at a better life 

and future. Their donation of $15,000 covers the direct cost of one 

child’s yearlong stay at Glenwood. 

Thanks to Glenwood’s High School Student Sponsors, our students 

have the opportunity to attend an excellent local private high school. 

Our High School Sponsors contribute $5,500 to cover the annual
