29th March 1917, Youngest Brother of Tsar Nikolai II)]
Fine original unsigned postcard photo showing him half
length, in uniform, as a young man, 5½” x 3½”, n.p., n.d.,

Michael became heir to the throne after George died in 1899, till
the Tsesarevich Alexei was born in 1904. Nikolai II abdicated for
himself and his son on 28th March 1917, but Michael refused to
ascend the throne without the will of the people and himself
renounced the throne on 29th March. He was killed by the
Bolsheviks at Perm about 28th July 1918.

Murat was Napoleon’s most dashing cavalry general and married
his master’s sister Caroline in 1800. Napoleon made him king of
Naples in 1808 where he completed the abolition of the feudal
system and the introduction of French law and administration. He
dreamed of ruling a united kingdom of Italy south of the Po, but
though he broke with Napoleon could not get the unequivocal
support of the Allies. He was defeated by Austria and a disastrous
landing in Calabria where he was captured, tried and shot.

This is an extremely rare postcard as Paul was murdered during
the Revolution and so, more interestingly, was his son Vladimir,
who died with Grand Duchess Elisabeth ,bybeingthrown
down a mineshaft. Princess Paley went on to write her memoirs
and her daughter Irina married Feodor, son of Grand Duchess
Xenia in 1923.
