in this instance, represents not so much the replacement <strong>of</strong> one alkaloid by<br />

another, as the accumulation <strong>of</strong> an intermediate owing, presumably, to the absence<br />

or reduced functionality <strong>of</strong> at least one enzyme in the pathway. It would be <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

to determine which enzyme is involved.
