6.9 Macaronesia<br />

Macaronesia is a biogeographic region in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, consisting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Azores, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, Madeira, and the Selvagen Islands<br />

(Fig. 6.15). <strong>The</strong> Azores archipelago consists <strong>of</strong> nine islands centered at 38°30′N,<br />

28°00′W, approximately 1700 km west <strong>of</strong> Lisbon. <strong>The</strong> Canary Islands archipelago lies<br />

between ca. 27°30′ and 29°30′ N and ca. 18° and 13°45′ W, with its easternmost island<br />

only about 100 km <strong>of</strong>f the coast <strong>of</strong> Morocco. <strong>The</strong> Archipelago consists <strong>of</strong> seven main<br />

islands (from west to east): El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria,<br />
