Pelagic Mollusks<br />

Many mollusks that live in the pelagic realm, either<br />

free-swimming or on the alga Sargassum, wash up conspicuously<br />

on Florida’s shores. Most of these species<br />

are evidenced in the nearshore environment principally<br />

by their shells and/or dead or dying animals (e.g., the<br />

gastropods Janthina, Recluzia, Fiona, and Glaucus and the<br />

cephalopod Spirula) and egg cases (“paper nautilus”:<br />

cephalopods, genus Argonauta), but some (e.g., the gastropods<br />

Litiopa and Scyllaea) may drop off Sargassum<br />

near shore and live for brief periods among the shallow-water<br />

benthos. All of these species are included in<br />

the general list.That list also includes Creseis acicula, a<br />

pteropod snail with a glassy, needle-like shell that can<br />

become entangled in swimwear, causing a type of<br />

“swimmer’s itch.” The species sometimes occurs in<br />
