in adultery leads Laurence to conclude that hc did not approve of marriage: He<br />

pardoned her hecause he considered adultery the natural consequence of mar­<br />

riage, and he would have accepted it were it to he found among his disciples . ...<br />

As long as marriage exists, an adulterous woman will be found criminal because<br />

she hurdens her hush and with the children of others. Jesus could not tolerate such<br />

an injustice; his system is logical: he wanted children to belong to the mother.<br />

Whence those remarkable words: Can no man your father on earth, for you have<br />

one Father, who is in heavenm:1 (p. 13). "'<strong>The</strong> children of God, as descended from<br />

one woman, form a single family . . . . <strong>The</strong> religion of the Jews was that of paternity,<br />

under which the patriarchs exercised their domestic authority. <strong>The</strong> religion<br />
