Sarcey, Francisque (1827-1899). Frenchjournalist aud drama critic.<br />

Sauvageot, Charles (1781-1860). French archaeologist and violinist at the Opera who<br />

assembled a vast collection, especially of Renaissance objects and art, during the 18308.<br />

His collection was given to the Louvre in 1856.<br />

Schapper, Karl (1812-1870). A leader in the Gennan and international working-class<br />

movement, and a member of the Central Committee of the Communist League. Active<br />

in the 1848-1849 revolution in Germany.<br />

Scheffer, Ary (1795-1858). Dutch-born French figure and portrait painter; criticized by<br />

Association of Gemlan Workers (1867-1871).<br />

Scribe, Eugene (1791-1861). Popular playwright. Author or co-author of over 350 plays<br />

and librettos concerned with the predilections of the bourgeoisie.<br />

epistolary novel Obermann (1804).<br />

Senefelder, Aloys (1771-1834). Czech-born inventor of lithography (1796) and color<br />

lithography (1826). Inspector of maps at the royal Bavariau printing office in Munich.<br />

September Laws. Passed ill September 1835, they forbade any attack on the government<br />

or person of Louis Philippe, and required official authorization, as well as the deposit of<br />

a bond, for all publications and theatrical displays.<br />

Servandoni, Giovanni (1695-1766). Italian architect, painter, and stage designer. Called<br />

to Paris in 1724 to be architect to the king. Among his works are the neoclassical fa"ade<br />

of the Cburch of Saint-Sulpice in Pal-is and the altar of the Church of the Chartreux in<br />

Lyons.<br />

Sevigne, Madame de (1626-1696). French writer and lady of fashion, famed for her<br />

letters recording daily life in Paris and Brittany.<br />

tional; in the 1850s, moderate republican.<br />

Silvy, Camille (1834-1910). Pioneer photographer, admired by Nadar.<br />
