Compagnonnage refers to trade guilds, solidarity associations among workers. <strong>The</strong> word<br />

comes from compagnon: "companion;' "workman;' '1ourneyman." A central feature of<br />

cornpagnonnage, up through the middle of the nineteenth century, was the tour de P,"ance, in<br />

which journeymen artisans traveled to various towns of France seeking employment in<br />

order to complete their professional training. <strong>The</strong> tour generally lasted three to four years<br />

and culminated in the production of a masterwork.<br />
