The Witelon University of Applied Sciences in Legnica - Field: Political science ECTS Course Catalogue 2010/2011 ECTS credits 3 1. Course title Political Geography 2. Course contents Lecture and classes The subject and methods of political geography. Scope, reasons and effects of the changes on the political map of the world and Europe and its current shape. Classical and modern geopolitical conceptions. Geopolitical space – the term of the state, sovereignty and nation, state’s constitutional forms. A state in the term of political geography. Geography of political orientation: chosen ideologies, tasks of elective geography, examples of political parties in the world. Introduction to global ecopolitics. Relations on international scale – political, economical and social openness of the states; formation of new economical regions and leaders on world’s economical market (e.g. China and India’s promotion). Ethnic, religious and economical world’s diversification as a potential conflict source. 3. Prerequisites None 4. Learning outcomes Graduate recognizes geopolitical view of the contemporary world and he or she can explain processes and phenomena, which have determined its formation. Graduate has basic knowledge on the subject of forming political and economical area with taking into account the matters concerning human- environment relation and globalization processes. 5. Course contents Historical meaning of the term of political culture. Polish experience – expanding of the term. Models and conceptions of political culture of: G. Almond, J.J. Wiatr i M. Sobolewski. The term of culture versus political culture. Popular understanding of political culture. Political culture’s functions. Benchmarking of political culture. Models of political culture(Types: political culture of G. Almond, culture of social democracy, totalitarian culture, hermitage culture, American individualism culture, state’s capitalism culture, military culture, egalitarian culture, market culture, fatalistic culture). Informative systems affecting political culture. Mass media in the process of shaping political culture. Role of political culture in shaping public opinion. 3. Prerequisites None 4. Learning outcomes Graduate can identify problems from the scope of political culture term as well as problems connected with determining the essence of the phenomenon and ambiguities related to popular understanding of political culture and based on scientific criteria.
