Course contents Lecture and classes Criteria and definitions of political party. Functioning of political party. Evolution of political party model – from notables to mass party. The families of political parties (communist, conservative, ultra right-wing). Conception of organization’s institutionalization by Ph. Selznick. State’s political party model in the countries of West and Middle-East Europe. Political party model in European Union. The principles of political party funding. Typologies of party systems. Classifications of political parties by G. Smith, J. Blondel, R. Herbut and H. Herzog. Interparty competition. Multivariate competition area (economical and axiological extent. Institutional determinants and their influence on interparty competition mechanism, on party system. 3. Prerequisites None 4. Learning outcomes Graduate knows the main political science categories within political parties’ functioning. He or she can compare complex elements of party system structure and has an ability to identify mechanisms of mutual relations in interparty competition (e.g. elective, coalition). He or she acquires the abilities of comparable, analytical perceiving of state’s (national) party systems evolutions of European countries as well as of European Union party system. 5.
