ESOL – Vocabulary Acquisition<br />

2.Course contents<br />

Classes<br />

The course a<strong>im</strong>s at expanding the students’ colloquial vocabulary, especially in the area of idioms, collocations,<br />

and stock phrases. Source materials include short articles, advertisements and editorials from the press (e.g.<br />

T<strong>im</strong>e, Newseek, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker), song lyrics, selected texts from English textbooks,<br />

and fragments of popular radio broadcasts and TV shows. The classes are discussion-based, with students<br />

usually talking about the assigned text in small groups, focusing on its point of view and rhetorical devices. The<br />

instructor points out selected words and phrases. The synonyms and antonyms are provided.<br />

4.Learning outcomes<br />

The students are able to communicate fluently about everyday issues and have the basic sociolinguistic skills that<br />

enable them to respond adequately in culturally-specific linguistic interactions.<br />

Multiple-choice vocabulary tests, reading-comprehension tests, and translation tests. The final grade is the<br />

arithmetic average of all the grades received during the semester.<br />
