Lecture and classes<br />

A panorama of the corpus of American literature – from its beginnings in XVII-XVIII c. till nowadays, including<br />

an analysis and interpretation of selected literary works.<br />

The Puritan Culture in XVII-XVIII c. Romance and gothic novel. Transcendentalism in New England - Emerson<br />

and Thoreau. A symbol and allegory in the XIX c. American novel. Misticism and the Cosmic Consciousness<br />

in the poetry by Walt Whitman. American realism, naturalism and <strong>im</strong>pressionism in the novel. American<br />

modernism. The Harlem Renaissance. Expressionism in the American drama. The Beat Generation:<br />

Allen Ginsberg i Jack Kerouac. American Post-modernism. The ethnic novel in America.<br />

Fluency in English (B1/B2 levels)<br />

4. Learning outcomes<br />

Students will be familiarised with major American literary works, they will understand and be able to analyse<br />

them using the adequate metalanguage, as well as understanding the phenomena influencing the continuity<br />

and transformation of American literature.<br />
