4
1. Course title
Engineering of machines – production (sem. I)
2. Course contents
Lecture
1. The essence of materials science. Classification and characteristics of different groups of materials: metal alloys,
polymers, glass and composite materials.
2. Physico-chemical basis for construction materials. Phase transitions of metal alloys. The structure and properties.
3. Ferroalloy: classification, chemical composition, properties and applications.
4. Non-ferrous alloys: classification, chemical composition, properties and applications.
5. Polymeric materials and ceramics, and composites.
6. Principles of material selection in terms of design and technology
7. Raw materials and semi-finished and the rules of their selection in the construction machinery
Laboratory
Activities in the Laboratory of Materials consist of observations and experiments and then carrying out analysis of the
structure and properties of materials used in construction machinery
3. Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of physics and chemistry in the field of study and degree or high school.
4. Learning outcomes
Students understand the essence of materials science is the relationship between the properties of strength, tribological,
thermal, electrical, construction, etc. and the internal structure of materials. They can examine and analyze the test
characteristics of different types of metallic and nonmetallic materials, depending on the requirements set. They can make
the choice of materials in accordance with the requirements of design and technology.
