Johanni <strong>and</strong> Andree de Tripoli, Arnaldo de Saona <strong>and</strong> Johanne de Acri had some trouble with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ship in <strong>the</strong> harbour of Genoa <strong>and</strong> had to rent galleys <strong>and</strong> people to lift it out <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er . 577<br />

This short discussion of <strong>the</strong> popul<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> communities in <strong>the</strong> <strong>L<strong>at</strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong><br />

should be carried fur<strong>the</strong>r by utilising more evidence from <strong>the</strong> notarial cartularies, which were not<br />

part of this research. <strong>The</strong> impression established thus far is th<strong>at</strong> from <strong>the</strong> time of Conrad of<br />

Montferr<strong>at</strong> onwards, <strong>the</strong> <strong>L<strong>at</strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong> had <strong>at</strong>tracted <strong>Genoese</strong> <strong>and</strong> Ligurian people of various social<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s, however, it was special opportunity for low rank knights, merchants <strong>and</strong> sailors to<br />

promote <strong>the</strong>ir social position. <strong>The</strong> lack of priv<strong>at</strong>e properties in <strong>the</strong> report of 1248-9 meant th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>re is gap of inform<strong>at</strong>ion about <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> popul<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> kingdom of Jerusalem, which<br />

might explain <strong>the</strong> absence of <strong>the</strong> leading trading families in <strong>the</strong>se reports.<br />
