leased for twenty eight years in <strong>the</strong> same manner th<strong>at</strong> Gibelet was. This evidence suggests th<strong>at</strong><br />

before 1187 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> had had a different type of administr<strong>at</strong>ion than a short term consul<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

527<br />

Bohemond's charter from 1189 is different to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r charters in many respects. It was<br />

granted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> by Prince Bohemond III of Antioch because <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> helped <strong>the</strong><br />

prince to save Antioch from Saladin's troops. Bohemond, <strong>the</strong>refore, granted <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong><br />

commercial <strong>and</strong> legal privileges in his territory. Who were <strong>the</strong> recipients of this charter? <strong>The</strong><br />

charter does not name an official represent<strong>at</strong>ive of <strong>the</strong> commune in <strong>the</strong> <strong>L<strong>at</strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong>, its language is<br />

vague in <strong>the</strong> descriptions: `ego Boamundus... dono et... concedo omnibus consulibus et<br />

lanuensibus Ianue.... 'S28<br />

<strong>The</strong> witness list was comprised of <strong>the</strong> bishop of Tripoli, <strong>the</strong> seneschal of<br />

Antioch <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r people, all on <strong>the</strong> prince's side, which means th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is no way of discerning<br />

who were <strong>the</strong> individual <strong>Genoese</strong> who helped <strong>the</strong> prince <strong>and</strong> received <strong>the</strong>se privileges. <strong>The</strong> vague<br />

form of this charter appears elsewhere too. It is not clear, for example, wh<strong>at</strong> aid was supplied by<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong>. All <strong>the</strong> document says is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> charter was given `propter bona eorum servitia et<br />

precipue quia ad necessit<strong>at</strong>em Antiochie succursum suum et auxilium ylari animo transmisere. '529<br />

Bohemond's charter was granted in April 1189, before <strong>the</strong> large <strong>Genoese</strong> fleet embarked<br />

from Genoa. This can be inferred from <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> on 30 April 1189 <strong>the</strong> consuls of Genoa,<br />

including Guido Spinola, were still in Genoa, which suggests th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> crusaders did not leave<br />

Genoa until l<strong>at</strong>er in th<strong>at</strong> year <strong>and</strong> could not have helped Bohemond in Antioch 53o Was <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Genoese</strong> aid supplied by local <strong>Genoese</strong>, inhabitants of <strong>the</strong> kingdom of Jerusalem, or some<br />

commercial <strong>Genoese</strong> ships th<strong>at</strong> happened<br />

to be in <strong>the</strong> district in 1187? One such ship belonged to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> Baldovino Erminio who toge<strong>the</strong>r with Ansaldo Binvicini assisted Conrad of<br />

Montferr<strong>at</strong> to escape from Acre <strong>and</strong> save Tyre in 1187. Ansaldo was l<strong>at</strong>er appointed <strong>the</strong> castellan<br />

of Tyre. <strong>The</strong>re is also evidence of o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Genoese</strong><br />

th<strong>at</strong> came to help <strong>the</strong> kingdom in its struggle for<br />

existence. In <strong>the</strong> Regni Iherosolymitani brevis historia, which is a short <strong>Genoese</strong> version of <strong>the</strong><br />

history of <strong>the</strong> kingdom of Jerusalem, <strong>the</strong> chronicle mentioned many<br />

<strong>Genoese</strong> (maximam<br />

quantit<strong>at</strong>em lanuensium) who sailed to Tyre from Romania <strong>and</strong> Sicily. 31 Some of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Genoese</strong><br />

must have embarked with <strong>the</strong> fleet desp<strong>at</strong>ched by <strong>the</strong> king of Sicily. O<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Genoese</strong> must have<br />

been merchants who travelled from Constantinople as suggested by Jacoby. 532 It is none<strong>the</strong>less<br />

interesting th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>se groups of <strong>Genoese</strong> did not appoint official leaders or represent<strong>at</strong>ives to act<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir behalf. It is thus hard to establish who governed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Genoese</strong> community in <strong>the</strong> <strong>L<strong>at</strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>East</strong> <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> time of crisis <strong>and</strong> who <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Genoese</strong> crusaders to offer help to <strong>the</strong> kingdom of<br />
