When Gibelet is compared in its urban architecture to towns such as Arsuf <strong>and</strong> Banyas, it<br />
seems th<strong>at</strong> Gibelet had been through more development than o<strong>the</strong>r towns of similar size. For<br />
example, <strong>the</strong> coastal towns of Jaffa, Haifa <strong>and</strong> `Atlit had no ca<strong>the</strong>drals. Also, Jaffa <strong>and</strong> Haifa had<br />
town walls but no towers. In Gibelet, however, one finds a ca<strong>the</strong>dral as well as several o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
churches, a castle <strong>and</strong> a town wall with towers. 427 <strong>The</strong> most elabor<strong>at</strong>e medieval description of<br />
Gibelet is <strong>the</strong> account of Wilbr<strong>and</strong> of Oldenbourg from 1211. Wilbr<strong>and</strong> saw Gibelet still in <strong>the</strong><br />
process of recovery <strong>and</strong> reconstruction after its destruction by <strong>the</strong> Muslims. None<strong>the</strong>less, it is<br />
clear th<strong>at</strong> he was impressed with <strong>the</strong> original fortific<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> especially <strong>the</strong> castle, which was<br />
extremely well fortified so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Muslims had failed in <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>at</strong>tempts to demolish it:<br />
